[PS5] Final Fantasy VII Remake PS5 Upgrade for Those That Redeemed Final Fantasy VII Remake Previously on PS Plus @ PlayStation

1750

They have finished milking customers into paying for Final Fantasy VII Remake PS5 and now those that redeemed it previously on PS4 PS Plus will now get a free upgrade.

To coincide with that "Episode Intermission, the DLC featuring Yuffie Kisaragi, will be 25% off for a limited time!"

More from Kotaku:
https://www.kotaku.com.au/2021/12/final-fantasy-vii-remake-f…

Here’s how to install that upgrade.
If you don’t currently have Final Fantasy VII Remake installed:
Head to the Final Fantasy VII Remake store page on your PS5.
Under Add-ons, look for “FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE upgrade for PS4 version owners”
Download it, and let it install. You’re good to go.
If you DO currently have Final Fantasy VII Remake installed:
Highlight the Final Fantasy VII Remake tile on your main menu and press the Options button on your controller
Then select Manage Game Content
If you can’t see a PS5 version of the game, head to the Play Game button and select the three dots
Finally, select View Product. You should see the upgrade there.
Using the same three-dots menu described above, you can now switch between the PS4 and PS5 versions at any time.

  • Yuffie Kisaragi, will be 25% off for a limited time!"

Good time to use my PS store credit from recent TGG/ JBs offer.

    PS5 upgrade review: https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2021-final…

In short, well worth it for 4K gaming.

Doesn't have the recent poor PC port issues.

  • +2

Bit of a slap in the face to those people who paid for the upgrade, no?

    • +5

There was no paid upgrade path for the PS+ freebie.

      • +1

That's what solidsnek is saying though if you wanted the PS5 version you had to pay for the PS5 release, but now it's free and available to upgrade PS+ version.

        • +6

I guess so but PS5 version came with the Yuffie DLC and you got it 6 months earlier. We don't tend to complain about things getting cheaper over time. But sure, should probably have done this from the get go.

        • +1

          Yeah exactly.
I had the PS+ version, but I decided I wanted to play it on my PS5 when the DLC was released. So I bit my lip and paid for the disc.
Had I known this free upgrade was coming for the PS+ version I already had I would have just waited…
There was an outcry at them not allowing that version to be upgraded at the time, so this is kind of like a double kick in the nuts tbh.

Edit: Don't get me wrong, it's still a deal for sure. Just seems a tad shady from Square Enix IMHO.

          • +5

@solidsnek: Not really. I mean, depends on how you look at it.
They never had to give the free upgrade to the free PS+ version. They chose to do so now. Is every PS+ title a slap in the face to the people who bought it previously? I see it as the same. (I own the physical copy as well, so I'm in the same boat).

            • +1

@Morien: I'm not sure it's exactly the same.
Every time you buy a game there is a chance it will be on PS+ the next month, sure. Luck of the draw.
But by deliberately excluding the PS+ version of FFVII Remake from being able to upgrade they sent a signal that it would never be offered, therefore tempting people to pay for the non-PS+ version if they wanted to upgrade.
I ain't about to boycott Square Enix or anything, the game is great and well worth paying full price for, the way they handled this just seems a bit deceptive.

              • +1

@solidsnek: This particular one isn't as simple as you think. PS+ version was offered a few months before the PS5 version came out. So, let's be realistic here, if FF7 is attractive enough, you would have played it.

It was annoying for people wanting that PS5 upgrade, but to be honest, people purchased the PS4 version because of the OZB deals. Furthermore, it feels more like fomo upgrade, rather than a necessary upgrade. Because I finished the game with the PS Plus / PS4 version, while I did play a little bit of PS5 version, I quickly stopped. Don't get me wrong, the quality of life improvement is great, but the PS Plus free PS4 version is good enough.

Considered how much most of us paid for the PS4 version, it is not a big deal. Sony is trying to milk us a lot more for Ghost of Tsushima. Also, there is no benefit for people who purchased both Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy for the upcoming upgrade (compared to people who purchased one of them).

Sony is milking fans with PS5 upgrades.

                • +3

@netsurfer: 100% agree with both of your posts.
                  It's a shame Sony couldn't have worked out a Xbox-style smart delivery.
I just found the original PS Blog post and quote "Update: Please note the PS4 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake available to PlayStation Plus members is not eligible for the PS5 digital version upgrade."
Really my issue is just with poor messaging as much as anything. Happy for the folks that have been holding off and will experience the upgrade for the first time, it's an A+ game.

                  • +1

@solidsnek: Two things still not clear to me:

                    • Does this 'upgrade' include the pre-order bonuses? My guess is yes.
                    • If we elected not to purchase Yuffie DLC, do we still get to play Yuffie in FF7 Remake Part 2?
                  • @solidsnek: This is ozbargain.com.au.. if it's not free, it's not good enough.

                  • @solidsnek:

Update: Please note the PS4 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake available to PlayStation Plus members is not eligible for the PS5 digital version upgrade.

I remember that this came out when not too many people have PS5 yet so it really wasn't a big deal but was a nice gesture to PS5 owners. At the same time the release of the game was late enough that most people who would be interested in the game would've already finished the game in PS4 so it's a bit of a cherry on top to see how the game compares in PS5. This would greatly impact only those who haven't finished the game on PS4 and have a PS5 at the time of the announcement as they would feel compelled to buy the game to play it on PS5 instead.

PS+ membership IMHO is not about getting the games that you love and want since day one because there's no guarantee the game you love will end up in PS+ and by the time it's on PS+ in most cases the hype is gone. So the games in there are games that you didn't intend to play since day one but good to try out.

Considering these, your care factor about the PS5 upgrade depends on whether you end up liking the game you didn't intend to buy and how much you actually want it in your PS5. When you flip the view to the people who buys the game from the beginning and didn't get it for free on PS+, basically the upgrade was a privilege given for them as thank you for directly contributing to their sales. Then after some time have lapsed they decided to extend the offer to PS+ subs.

    • +3

You paid for the PS4 version of the game, right, and without the Yuffie DLC I presume?

If so, technically, you purchased the PS4 version of the game to get the 'free' PS5 upgrade. Yuffie DLC is still not free.

This "free" upgrade for PS Plus members who collected PS Plus version of the PS4 game is going to be a bit convoluted. Technically, we only can play the game when we have an active PS Plus subscription.

For those of us who purchased the PS4 version, it is a bit tricky. We will most likely need to download the PS5 (PS Plus upgrade) version so we no longer need to put the disc in. Sony really should consider not treating physical version and digital version of the same game as different versions.

      • +1

        OMG….

I own all three consoles. Sure PS5 is an awesome gaming consoles. But Sony sucks!

Why is Sony doing this? Why? Why?!

I really can't understand. They could've make this a lot easier to be explained. Instead Sony makes this sooooo confusing.

    • +1

But you could say that about anything added to PS+? It was all paid content before being added.

      • +2

It's more about the backflip done by Sony and/or Square. Now, the more interesting question is:

PlayStation Plus members who claimed Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End via their PlayStation Plus subscription are not eligible for the $10/€10 digital PS5 upgrade.

Here we go with this practice one more time. Is Sony going to flip on that one later on? The chance of getting Uncharted 4 at $9 between Boxing Day - New Year sale is high. Are people going to purchase it? Sony even dangle the 'free' movie ticket to entice people.

        • They will probably flip-flop more when those other franchises also finally release on PC …

    • of course it is, but thats their entire business model especially for the moment when theres no actual real next-gen games competing for player $ & time.

you pay for early access, and depending on how they trap you with extra content.

i nearly broke a couple of times, but glad i held out. tbh, i could hold out until the full ff7 remake part 2 drops, cause waiting is going to be annoying.

  • +5

Oh awesome, good time to flog off and trade in my physical copy that I specifically bought for the update before it loses value :D

    • I'll give you fi fiffy for it.

      Anyone got a discount code?

  • +2

oh get stuffed… I just bought it during the black friday sales… but i guess i get the DLC… so…. still… argh!

    • +1

Physical version? Find out how much you can trade it in for and if it is good, trade it in? Do bear in mind, stores like EB would not factor Yuffie DLC in the trade in price (I assume Yuffie DLC is provided as a code of some sort).

      • No, digital - I don't buy phyiscal xbox or playstation games anymore

        • Well, then you own the game, rather than it is a game in the subscription you collected. It's more about whether you get the entertainment value or not.

  • +1

nice! was worth the wait for me.. back logged with so many ps4 games..

  • +1

when was this on PS+ :(

    • March

  • +2

    nice, glad i waited!

    • +2

Yep, glad I waited! Had no idea this was even in the pipeline but sometimes things work out in our favour!

  • ah sweet, stopped playing after a while in anticpiation of eventually upgrading

  • this is so confusing? so I'm i still screwed if I only bought the ps4 physical version?

    • +5

As you own the PS4 disc version, you're eligible for the free PS5 upgrade right now

      • +1

That's what I thought when I bought the physical PS4 version of It Takes Two, but they removed the option to upgrade to the PS5 version…

        • +1

I was curious about this so I found something on reddit - Although these steps don't look that different than regular PS4 upgrades I think?

You can get the PS5 version, but it is VERY convoluted. This is what you need to do:

Hover over the game and then press down.

Select the 3 dots next to ‘Play’.

          Select ‘View Product’.

Select the 3 dots next to ‘Wishlist’.

Select the upgrade option (3rd item down).

          Follow the remaining steps.

The PS5 version will now be installed alongside the PS4 version. You should then go to Game Library and go to delete the game. When you do, you’ll be prompted to check/uncheck the PS4 and/or the PS5 versions. Obviously make sure you only delete the PS4 version.

          • +1

@Magical Sound Shower: Yep, that's exactly how I've tried to do it a few times. After choosing the upgrade option, instead of getting the button "Free <disc icon>" I get a "Learn More" button, which if I click I get the message "this product is not available" or something similar.

I believe people started getting this issue around 3 weeks ago as I've only managed to find a handful of others on the internet with the same problem and it's all within the last 3 weeks or so.

Reached out to EA help who are useless so I want to contact Sony but work makes it very difficult

        • … wow this is one of the products that explicitly stated that free PS5 upgrade is available…

Also Sony PlayStation customer service is still quite poor

    • If you are upset about the $$$ spent on the physical version, then try to trade it in or sell it. The benefits of PS4 physical version are:

      • You own the game so you don't need to have active PS Plus subscription to play it.
      • You would have already upgraded and played the PS5 version. Otherwise, the game is in your pile of shame so let's not whinge about that.
  • +3

The tweet doesn't mention the PS+ version upgrade will be free

    • +1

      True.

      • +1

All the step-by-step instructions on how to claim mention just going somewhere and clicking 'redeem' though, I imagine that would mention either the PSN store or needing to purchase at some point if that weren't the case.

    • +1

IGN and other gaming websites are saying it's free, and it would be kinda weird the upgrade that is free on every other version would not be here.

      • How many other versions? Is this available on Xbox and Switch?

        • Sorry, versions as in physical and digital releases.

        • He meant PS4 physical version and PS4 digital version (non-PS Plus). The game is also available on PC.

Switch - maybe it will become available. XBox - no official annoucement. There was a leak suggesting there might be one. The Sony exclusive period has ended.

      • Happy to be proven wrong, just seemed a little presumptuous. I'm not particularly happy that Sony have been making these PS+ versions that are exempt from whatever upgrades are available to the normal version.

        • Most likely free upgrade because if it is "not free", that means for a fee, it is possible to convert to fully owned digital version. If it is for a small fee, that could be better than buying physical version (in terms of quality of life).

I think it is a calculated move, to entice people to buy the Yuffie DLC.

  • Is this for a limited time only or forever? Don’t have a PS5 yet, any way to claim the upgrade without a PS5?

    • Might be able to do it in the app or on a browser.

    • From my experience you can only upgrade from PS4 to PS5 version of a game on the actual PS5 console, not sure if it's different with PS Plus title.

Having said that I don't believe this is time limited from the wording of the post. Only the 25% off DLC deal is time limited.

      Holy crap that was good
      Science!

    • Amazing! Now where can I get a cheap copy of FF7 Remake now I sold mine for $80 when everywhere is out of stock at the time.

      • There should be a lot of OZBers selling their copies soon.

  • I have a hard copy of the PS4 version. Is mine automatically converted on my PS5?

    • yeah you where able to do that for that since June for digital and physical owners, its just us PSN+ plebs where not able to. You still need to purchase the Intergrade Yuffie DLC if you want it.

      • Honestly too much hype on this ps5 version. Got the PSN version on PS4 stopped playing 2/3 of the way.

Not sure what it is these days the excitement doesn't last for FF series

    • You haven't downloaded the PS5 version yet? Before you do that, make sure you choose 1 save game and upload it in the PS4 version of the game for the save game conversion. You can only carry 1 save game from PS4 to PS5.

  • +1

Is this DLC only available on ps5? Haven't gotten a ps5 because no stock

    • -1

      Sadly yes.

    • Looks like the DLC is available on PC in the "base game" if you were wondering about non-PlayStation consoles. No weird partial PlayStation exclusivity deals for those parts (unlike the other franchise products)

FINAL FANTASY VII is reborn, using cutting-edge graphics technology, a new battle system and an additional adventure featuring Yuffie Kisaragi.

FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE contains the following content:
      ● FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE full game
      ● DLC "FF7R EPISODE INTERmission" (New episode featuring Yuffie Kisaragi)
      ● Weapon: Cacstar
      ● Armor: Midgar Bangle
      ● Armor: Shinra Bangle
      ● Armor: Corneo Armlet
      ● Accessory: Superstar Belt
      ● Accessory: Mako Crystal
      ● Accessory: Seraphic Earrings
      ● Summon materia: Carbuncle
      ● Summon materia: Chocobo Chick
      ● Summon materia: Cactuar

  • -1

doesnt mention anywhere that its free….

  • Not working for me, doesn't say upgrade at all. Now reinstalling game hopefully it works.

Anyone with same issue as me?

    • Starts in 3 days. Or, you are referring to PS4 physical version?

      • +1

Thanks for the reply, call me blind. I didn't read that part 🤣

        • In preparation, go to the PS Plus PS4 version of the game, choose Upload Save Data, and upload one of your saved games. You can only upload 1.

The newer PS5 firmware might be better (now allowing co-existence of PS4 and PS5 versions). Previously, it wasn't possible so if you forgot, uninstall PS5 version, reinstall PS4 version, upload the save data, then install PS5 version.

One annoying thing with FF7 PS5 version is that it was introduced prior to Sony allowing PS5 version of games access to save games from PS4 version.

  • I am PS+ subscriber now, can I get the Final Fantasy VII Remake?

    • If you didn't redeem it in March then you can't get it for free. You will need to purchase the game from the PSN Store or the disc.

  • I've just gotten a ps5 and i've been waiting to play this game for a long time! (my last Playstation was PS2, so i'm still a bit confused about how this all works).

Could anyone please tell me what is the best way to go about getting FF7 if i didnt get snatch it when it was free during the PS+ month?

    • You can hunt for a used copy of the the PS4 physical (disc) version. When it was on sale, it used to sell for $20 new. A used version would typically go for around that price if not slightly higher. Try eBay or Facebook Marketplace.

Once you have the disc, just pop it into your PS5 and you can download the upgrade free of charge.

      • -1

Don't bother. By the time the next FFVII there might be collectors edition that might include the first FFVII remake and might be in discount as well so save your $20

    • Won’t be cheapest, but it’s on sale currently in the PS store

  • -2

    "milking"? ..
are you implying they get all those developers, testers, project managers and graphic designers to work for free?

I wouldn't be surprised if those devs cost 150 bucks/hours on average *each

and random interwebs just expect to get free stuff

    • What a giant leap to make to say I'm implying that they should work for free.

What other reason is there to withhold the PS5 upgrade released for free for all other owners besides PS Plus users if they weren't trying to get you to buy it again outside of the subscription?

    • Milking customers is a fair assessment. I bought the physical version before and it is still quite annoying. PS Plus isn't free, and while I get the deal between Sony and Square was probably just PS4 version only, the whole thing was quite unpleasant.

Every time I want to play the PS5 version, I have to insert the disc. This was something I didn't need to do when I played PS4 PS Plus version. To date, I have both versions installed because there are times I just couldn't be bothered grabbing the disc.

Furthermore, I do feel Square and/or Sony is/are milking the customers so I decided not to buy the Yuffie DLC. I get all these things cost money, but there will be part 2 and part 3 so don't milk customers on DLC too often.

      • I do think they are milking customers with this remake 100%. FF7R part 1 didn't have enough substance to set a full game in Midgar, which was only 5 hours in the original game. The game is loaded with unnecessary filler and is worse for it.

        • +1

I just finished the game on PC (haven't played original or any other FF) and I do kinda see where you're coming from. Some of the content just feels drawn out and when the story finally gets going the game just ends like that. Makes sense when you find out it was just part of the original games story and they are making more FF7R games. I can't wait for part two since I loved the game.

          • +1

@Ostrk: the ending of the remake diverges considerably from the original. It's not really a remake, but a reboot. It also massively spoils the original game's later parts but you wouldn't know it if you didn't play the original obviously.

You also see a character you wouldn't recognize if you didn't play the original, because they aren't introduced until very late. It's a strange remake for sure.

            • @lostn: It's strange and idk what to make of any of it since none of these changes are relevant for someone who just didn't play the original. I had no expectations so I just experienced the game as it is and loved it to bits. Hope they make a good series out of it and I for one am glad they are remaking games like FF7 and Nier because they introduce people like me to games that I otherwise wouldn't have played. Definitely planning on playing more FF games in the future and I've already downloaded X-X2 since a friend recommended it. Haven't played the yuffie dlc but considering I played all of FF7R in like five days I think it's good to take a break lol

              • @Ostrk: the original is so good but you would probably find it too outdated to play today. There are mods that remaster the graphics if you're interested. I still loved it. I played it alongside the remake so I could compare it. I think it would have colored your experience of the remake differently had you played it first but oh well.

I'm not suggesting you go and play it now, but it might just be my #1 or #2 game of all time.

    • JP devs don't get paid anywhere near what western devs make, and they get overworked hard. JP workers do lots of unpaid overtime in general.

  • Is there a way to add this to your PSN account via the web browser on the PS store ? Don't have a PS5 yet.

    • Doesn't seem so. Both PS App and website doesn't let you claim it. Only on the PS5 itself. At least for now, maybe they haven't updated them still…

      • Would like to know this too

  • +2

No way to claim this if you previously claimed the disc upgrade like I did.

PS5's nonsensical upgrade process needs to be fixed, too many hoops to go through and their AU support isn't accepting emails so someone could remove the old one from my account

    • +2

Sony PS support staff I spoke to had no idea and doesn't have the ability to delete that previous PS5 upgrade. It's generally quite frustrating dealing with PS support.

      • The email reply from them basically amounted to asking me if I had tried upgrading it and tried reinstalling the PS+ PS4 version, so I'm not even sure if they read my original email at all other than the category and game listed…

        • I called Sony PS support again. This time, the CSR knew what I am talking about. However, he doesn't have the ability to delete the PS5 Upgrade acquired back in June, so he has to send this case to another team for further investigation. I've heard some people overseas managed to have the PS5 upgrade deleted. However, not expecting this issue to be resolved. There is going to be extra delay since it is 24/12 today.

I think the CSR I spoke to is based in Australia this time.

        • FYI, Sony PS support has removed the disc version upgrade for me and I was able to get the PS5 upgrade via PS Plus.

To my surprise, I didn't need to download anything, the PS5 version downloaded (previously for disc) is switched to PS Plus (the disc icon is changed to PS Plus).

          • @netsurfer: Glad you had some luck there, I'm still getting the usual run around even when contacting them again. Might have to try calling them, their live chat was no help either.

            • @ShadowStealer7: I wish there is a way to find out who that CSR I spoke to was. He was very helpful and switched on. He did have to run through some basic diagnostic questions (formality I reckon). I told him that I re-installed the PS Plus PS4 version and re-installed the PS5 upgrade version. However, the PS5 upgrade version keeps showing the disc icon and insists I put in the disc. I sold my copy after finding out PS Plus version is also getting the free upgrade. I would like him to help me delete the PS5 upgrade version (so I can get the PS Plus upgrade version so I don't need the disc).

He told me he understands and actually said I am entitled to the upgrade. However, he had to raise a request to have that done. He did tell me that due to Christmas / New Year period, it would take longer than usual. He did check when I acquired the PS Plus version and when I did the PS5 upgrade (for disc version). Pretty sure he is an Aussie.

Hope you get him or someone who is equally as good next time you call. No need to send an e-mail with screenshots and describe the problem in the e-mail rubbish.

  • Definitely free. Upgraded this morning.

Would've missed it had you not posted!
