Free Mail Storage Upgrade to 1GB (Usually 500MB) @ ProtonMail

3370

I know many of you have been using Proton mail as the primary email for low volume high security requirements (banks, financial, gov, identity etc.) with the 500 MB free tier. Here’s a chance to increase that to 1 GB by following the below steps from your existing account. This may work for new accounts as well, but I have not tried.

Here are four actions you can take to get the most out of your Proton Mail inbox:

  • Discover how our privacy features protect you
  • Set up auto-forwarding from Gmail
  • Change account logins to your Proton address
  • Get the Proton Mail app on iOS or Android

Once you have taken these four actions, we will upgrade your storage to 1 GB. With 1 GB of storage space, you can keep even more of your emails and attachments secure and private. You have 15 days to complete all actions.

You can complete actions and keep track of your progress by logging in to your ProtonMail account on the web app and selecting the gift icon at the bottom left of your inbox.

If you don’t know what protonmail is, or compare it with generous free tier of other ‘free’ email providers, this deal may not be for you.

Update:

  • This works for new users too as confirmed by b00r0wa
  • If any one is interested in a paid version, they have listed EOY offer (though this could be ongoing) for Proton mail Plus @ USD ~50 p.a here. The paid version of ProtonMail enables you to have 5 GB inbox space, a shorter email address (e.g., [email protected]), IMAP support, auto-responder, more labels & filters for better inbox organization, etc.

Update Dec 2023

The four actions required have been updated.

  • Bottom line is this free product from proton mail better in terms of security than MS outlook free version?

    • It depends on what level of security you want

Microsoft colluded with FBI to bypass Outlook encryption

The FBI makes a great middlman between comapnies like Microsoft and the NSA.

Microsoft worked to provide the FBI with court-ordered user data after the company began using encryption for customers who used Outlook, according to newly-released documents first leaked by Edward Snowden.

When is someone going to start ozbargainmail.com?

    • +3

It will be very difficult to make any money from that. :)

a shorter email address (e.g., [email protected])

is available in the free tier.

    • +2

You can only receive mail using free tier. So if you update it with some providers who, later ask you to send mail from your listed email for things such as password rest, hard luck.

      • +1

Also think it doesn’t look great to receive mail at one tld and then respond from another. Some mail clients might have issues with it in terms of threading convos or you might appear as two contacts to someone else since on their end your using different email addresses. Personally I’d avoid using an address you can’t receive and send from.

    protonmail hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

  • hmmm? where is this gift icon? I don't see it.

  • Worked for me

They upgraded mine without doing anything.

Proton is probably the most secure, anonymous and free centralized email provider there is.

Their policy is to tell foreign feds to poff or come back with a Swiss court order. Even a court order can't open old emails because the encryption process is a one-way street that can only be unlocked with a private key.

The best way to use proton is to use up the quota, burn the email address and start fresh with a new one.

All I had to do was import one contact from a csv file to finish the process.
Been a user for years. An extra 500MB is very welcome.

    • what import method did you use to just import a csv file? i have several protonmail accounts, so it would be nice if i could just repeat the same process across accounts

      • @hate go to Contacts > Settings > Import from CSV or vCard

    • +1

Yep, the requirement is actually to import emails OR contacts. So just importing a single contact meets the criteria.

  • what is the difference of using this vs PGP with any other email provider?

    • The server location.

    • It’s integrated into the whole email system. It’s secured when in storage and automatically checks and uses PGP encryption when emailing.

I run by businesses through Proton, and all emails within the businesses are encrypted.

  • If you have the know how and time, by all means use DIY PGP, you don’t have to trust anyone. There is no middleman and even if for some reason protonmail turns out the Crypto AG way, you are safe.

  • Got 1 thanks!

  • In regards to setting up a recovery method, if I give them another email address or my phone number how is that information secured?
Basically I want to know if it's safe to hand over that info?

  • Thanks OP, got 16.

  • it's on the bottom left hand corner when you click the giftbox https://imgur.com/a/pN1M4Iz

  • Guessing due to the encrpted nature of their service that syncing your contacts/calendar on your phone from your Protonmail account won't work?

    • They have their own calendar app. Technically you can use the secret link for the calendar, but then it’s not secure.

Contacts unfortunately will only sync in inside the ProtonMail app (takes in contacts from your phone)

  • What are the benefits of using Proton Mail?

    • You can sign up Ashley Madison without fear of private investigators checking on ya.

  • After logging in, the lower left corner of the screen will display the currently used space and storage space size, and an orange gift box will be seen. After clicking, the system will prompt how to upgrade to 1G

  • +1

I don't understand why they would do this.
Doubling the size of their free email option competes directly with their paid accounts. (their only real income apart from donations)
As soon as you start linking other mail accounts ,contact lists and (at least google) app installs not only do you erode your anonymity but alarm bells should start going off.
Why would a company that promises not to look at or sell your data compromise their own income stream to get more of your data?

    • I’d say it’s to encourage more people to get fully set up and try the service, at which point they may transition to full customers. Personally I wouldn’t want to be limited to 1GB so if I liked the service, at some point I’d probably need to start paying.

The people that don’t use it, who sign up but never really use the service, likely aren’t going to consume the extra storage anyway so it won’t hurt in many instances.

    • Probably Allows users to be more willing to use Proton as their main email. If they do, they will get to 1gb fairly quickly, and may want to upgrade at that point

  • Signed up a new account and finished four tasks. I got upgraded to 1GB storage.

  • G8!, taken me only 7min from creation to upgrading to 1TB following your instruction. Now, I am owned by the Swiss :).

  • Signed up also, seems to suggest 29 days remaining (end of month) till 1GB bonus offer expires

  • Pretty easy to meet the requirements.

    Import your emails and contacts

Only requires you to upload a .vcf with a single contact contained in the file. I just made one for my email address with them.

    Send your first message

You can send an email to yourself using your proton address to qualify for this.

    Set up a recovery method

Are used [email protected] temporarily for a recovery method and then removed it after the qualification for doing step had been registered with them.

"I know many of you have been using Proton mail as the primary email for low volume high security requirements (banks, financial, gov, identity etc.) "

And HOW exactly do you know this?

    • I don't know either, but the ABC does use protonmail as part of the investigative journalism that they conduct.

Anyone wondering if they should continue using gmail/hotmail/yahoo or other "free" email provider should consider taking some time and read this (at times sassy) article on why you should consider moving to an email tied to your own domain name.

    https://sneak.berlin/20201029/stop-emailing-like-a-rube/

Admittedly, not all considerations (and most of them are probably over the top to anyone not hyper security/privacy conscious) would apply to everyone, but divorcing your online presence away from a Google or a Microsoft onto a domain you control that can continue to receive emails irrespective of Google or Microsoft's desire to keep doing business with you is a good way to go.

  • I've had a free account with them since they started, with the .ch address.

If you don't want a Swiss court to get hold of your emails then encrypt them. That's the point of end-to-encrypted email. If you don't want the court to get your IP address, which is the only thing Proton could give them, use their onion site.

Have anyone dealt with their support yet?

I looked at app store reviews and there were 2 paid customer got their account locked and could not contact support (1 only reached out after 2 weeks after he disputed with Amex)

    • Haven’t tried support before, but they are generally quite active on Reddit answering questions etc

  • It's been my primary email for years, I really wish I could get as much space as new users.

    • This works for new users too as confirmed by b00r0wa

You mean new users get more storage?

  • +1

I don't get it. I don't think Microsoft can be hacked, so I guess Outlook/hotmail is safe. Office 365 sub is very valuable that gives Office app, email with higer storage, and Onedrive for auto sync files. The Onedrive app also auto upload photos in mobile phones at full resolution.

Like it's the best value for so cheap. Why pay extra $ for this?

    • Hmm, safe.
I've had a Hotmail address since 1997, just after M$ bought it. Yes, I'm that old. It was my main account for everything and one morning circa 2003-2004, I logged in to find it empty.

Long story short, after a long back and forth with tech support, they concluded that both the main and backup servers my emails were stored on had somehow failed… At the same time. I switched to Gmail and I've not had any data redundancy failures with them yet. Probably time to move to something more private though.

But yeah, maybe safe from hacking, but not 'safe'. A local backup is not too crazy a thing these days.

    • It’s because Google and Microsoft are in the business of advertising and AI. Both companies build profiles of you based off the emails you receive and read, which then assists advertisers to send you more targeted advertising.

Also, there’s a lower barrier to getting your emails passed onto law enforcement, and the amount of information able to passed on is also more

  • I lot of hoops and a lot of shared data for an extra 500Mb.

  • I can't find a way to select which folders from Gmail to automatically forward to proton. Does anybody know??

  • cant see this in my account
