How Much to Pay for Wix-Developed Website?

Hoping to get some web developer advice.

Had a local business website setup by a web developer. He advised there are various options from expensive to affordable; ranging from React JS, HTML to Wix/WordPress.

The site itself is fairly basic… services on offer, pictures (they supplied), information, A Menu with the standard: About us, Contact Us, etc albeit a quite nice one.

What is the range if price this is typically worth

How long is a piece of string?

Using a template with minimal asset design and your copy is under $500

Custom design including logo and exclusive images are 10k-100k+

And there is lots in between that.

    • ^ spot on imo

Have you considered doing it yourself.. I'm very impressed by the simplicity and price of https://carrd.co/

If you don't need shopping cart, full blown photo gallery etc it's probably perfect.

Did you ask for much customisation to a Wix template you chose, or did they do anything else like SEO or Google business listings or Analytics?
And like Hellfire said, custom work makes the price vary a lot - in your case I would guess anywhere from $500 for a simple or recycled copy of an existing project or Wix template to $1500/$2000 for some custom work done for you.

Website quotes are based purely on labour cost.

$150/hr for a local contractor. Probably 2 days to produce and another 2 days messing around with revisions = $4,800

Anything that needs proper front-end skills like JS and React instant $15k+

    • Wow I need to get into freelancing simple websites for locals.

I knocked up my website in 5 mins. The back end though…

Clearly. I can't even figure out what your website is/does.

        • Well I've always wondered what has and has not been said before.

So I set off on an ambitious project to collect every single sentence ever said and put it into a database. Using $3.50 for server hosting and a few hours of my time I wrote a script to loop through a 2gb folder of tweets I downloaded (there are 500 million tweets per day btw) and separate them into distinct sentences.

At the moment there are 24 million "sentences" in the database and since I threw caution to the wind, the search function is a bit slow. I decided to make it a wild card search so words/letters in the middle of a sentence will be counted. Here's the result for "jesus christ"

It was a bit of a passion project I've since tossed aside since I would need an insane amount of computing power and storage to crawl every tweet and process it.

          • @SnowDragon: Ahhhh! OK yeah, at least on Mo ile it wasn't doing anything, but it may have been load time.

            Interesting project

          • @SnowDragon: Oh, also what hosting are you using for this? $3.50 is very reasonable and I'm looking for cost effective ways to host some dumb projects of my own 😀

            • @jetblack: Looks like it was $6 for the year. Must have been the $0.50/m for 12 months

The 24m rows in my database used all the 4gb database space lol.

              • @SnowDragon: Previously Unsaid Sentences
Does he always look good in brown?

Congrats, you're the first person to say this sentence

I also wouldn't put WordPress into the same bucket as Wix - some of the biggest websites in the world are built on WordPress.

If I was paying a professional/specialist (any amount) to build a website, I'd expect it not be done on Wix

    • It depends - horses for courses, Wix is a lot easier for some clients to maintain and add to than wordpress can be.
In everything else, of course Wordpress is more versatile.

      • +3

I do agree - entirely depends whether it's a one off build, or they're subscribing to some kind of 'service' for a complex product

I'd be expecting to pay a hell of a lot less for a website made in Wix, than I would on WordPress

        • +3

Yep. I'd even go so far as suggesting that paying for a Wix site is a bit backwards. The whole purpose of Wix is that's it's supposed to be DIY with no coding or development experience necessary.

          • +3

@Payne: That's the way I see it too! The only way I see Wix in this scenario is if it wasn't a developer building the website, but some kind of marketing/design company with limited development expertise

Wordpress can work out cheaper, in terms of license and hosting, than Wix. But you need to understand Wordpress. You don't need to understand Wix to leave it running for years at a time.

You can do anything in Wordpress, you could fairly easily do a clone of OzBargain or The New Yorker sites in Wordpress.

And secondly, why is a website developer even talking about the technology - they should be choosing the most effective technology/platform for the project? A layperson doesn't know/doesn't care about how the site is built, as long as it fulfils whatever their requirements are

    • +4

To be fair, I have more and more clients requesting to have sites that they can update with content themselves and what kind of platforms there are available in which such a site can be built. Of Course I always suggest Wordpress. If a "web developer" suggested Wix I'd walk out lol

  • OP, How much DID you pay?

    • Havnt got the invoice yet… but I chose Wix as he said it's easy to manage later (add content) and the time to setup the site is much quicker.
He anticipated 3 months for a site in HTML, but 3-4 weeks work for Wix.

      • Are you in a position to reject the work or?
Wordpress and a theme off themeforest can get you miles ahead. Spend the afternoon learning how to use wordpress on YouTube.
But if you're genuinely happy about the work provided, How much are you ok spending on the site?

        • Yes I can reject.

I checked our Wordpress sites, dunno if his work was bad but the mobile site of Wordpress were poor.
The desktop versions somehow looked better.

I opted for Wix even though it will cost me a monthly cost just to run it.

      • How complicated is your site? I can't imagine a Wix site taking 3-4 weeks. You should get some quotes from other people.

      • Is that timing because they are working on other sites at the same time?

        • yes, I think thats what I understood

  • Try doing it yourself, get a grasp of how much time it would take and what your time is worth.

I'd suggest you might also think about Shopify. Use the standard template and take payments via Paypal. Worth a shot.

  • Go on Fiverr and check out what people are offering for Wix services.

Your No.1 step is to get content together so the design can fit around the content.

    • thanks - great source

  • For Wix, you could pay your primary school child to do it so $100 my 8 year old brother used it for his primary school project
Wordpress probably from $250 depending how many pages you want

Pay $0 for a Wix developed site. If you are even considering Wix you should have a crack at it yourself, but I'd suggest not building a business website in Wix.

This is as someone mentioned, a how long is a piece of string kind of question.

A developer can build a site that works but mostly won't look pretty and a designer can build a site that looks pretty but might not be as functional either from a technical standpoint or SEO friendly etc When you find a developer who can both develop and design a functional site and make it look good too with SEO and UI considerations on top of branding you will start to pay proper money, as you really do get what you pay for.

Henry Ford once said, “A man who stops advertising to save money is like a man who stops a clock to save time.” So you need to consider what your purpose is, what the requirements are and what your budget is and build the best site you can from there. Your website is valuable. It's a 24/7 advertisement about who you are and what you do as a business. It's an extension of your business. For many people these days it IS your business. You want a website that both functions and looks good or you WILL lose money and opportunities. If you're serious about the success of your business, I wouldn't skimp on the web development.

So for example when I build a basic business website built in Wordpress using a fully customised comercial theme, prices start at around $2500 depending on what copy and content is supplied by the client and various other factors and requirements. With every site I've built I've had to modify, or add more copy especially in consideration for SEO etc.

    Good luck!

  • Op update:

Here are the website requirements sent…

    • Main Page with Menu (About Us, Contact Us, Request Appointment, Services)
    • Main Page has media / photos / columns / Details
    • Logo has been supplied, all other themes, designs created by developer.
    • Link buttons to call from Website / Email from Website via 1-click
    • SEO optimisation via keyword.

    Invoice 500

    reasonable?

    • Yes. It really is on the lower end TBH.

      • Thanks!

    • Yes, very reasonable

    • Yes, for $500 go with it. Rock bottom price with the appointment function being part of the requirements.

But you better ask the web developer about what you can expect from this price in regards to ranking in Google search results in the business' industry.

It's one thing to build a website but it's another thing to build one which performs well in Google. It can get very costly quickly if it's not done right from the start and you need it to bring in traffic from searches, especially if you have to scrap it and start again with someone else.

      • Thanks, noted.
