PS5 or Switch for 7 Year Old?

Hi,

Wondering which device is best for a 7yo, noting they aren't all that different in price. I also like gaming so am keen a a Ps5.

The switch is ok, but a bit limited in scope maybe?

  • I would probably go Switch. Or even Wii, WiiU or 3DS.

At that age, it doesn't really matter if you don't have the latest releases. I'd imagine most kids only get 1-2 new games a year anyways.

I am grateful that I got to grow up playing Zelda Ocarina of Time, Majoras Mask and Super Mario 64. Great to build problem solving and reading skills.

Nowadays kids are plagued with a lot of addictive, predatory, microtransactions filled free to play games.

We previously got 15-20 quality AAA games per year. Now we struggle to get even half that.

  • Switch obviously, but if Zelda windwakers not installed on that switch then best not buy anything anymore.

    • Still hoping that gets announced. One of the best

    • I would say buy a Wii U. But I just saw that people are selling Twilight Princess HD for $100+.
They are no longer the bargain they once were.

Gumtree Xbox One/PS4 bundles with a tonne of games would be good if you needed to do it on a budget.

Halo, Skyrim, Forza, Ori, Cuphead, Rocket League, Sea of Thieves (voice chat off). All of these should be fine for a 7yr old.

Hell. Zeldas ReDeads and Mummys from Ocarina and Majora's mask are far more terrifying and those games were rated "G".

  • Switch. Beyond the accessible games for kids, you seem to have better control over the experience than PSN. I know you like the PS5 for yourself but tbh the switch offers plenty of amazing games that can be enjoyed by adults too. Plus there are plenty of ports now of games released on other consoles as well even as big as the Witcher 3.

PS5 or Switch for 7 Year Old?

You would trade your kid for a gaming console?

I'd want at least a new MacBook Pro…

    • Supply and demand. Everyone's trying to trade their kids because of covid and them being home all the time. Value has dropped.

      • True…

Might hold on to mine for another year until I can get a better deal…

        • I thought newer things were more expensive than oldee things

How about getting them a book.

    • +2

Unless they're going to read it multiple times, books are not that great for a present, probably better for a couple of years younger when they just want the same book every night. Borrow books from the library instead so you can read to them and they can read a greater variety of books for free. Ultimate bargain.

      • Unfortunately once you get them a console their grades go.down

Only if you can't be bothered being a parent and creating boundaries.

Damn! When I was 7 we had to share one Gameboy colour with two other siblings. Kids these days are so lucky.

    • I did the same. Also one of TV in the house. Dad was a betamax fan so couldn't even hire movies from the local video shop

      • damn, how long until he admitted to just getting a VCR

        • It was years. He was/is an audiophile

    • When I was 7 all we had was the wireless to stare out. Nights were slow.

    • True and at the same time, our parents reminded us of how lucky we were having a Gameboy when their childhood entertainment was a skipping rope and books.

The switch has a much bigger range of games that will be suitable for him.

But, I'd recommend an Xbox with game pass. Lots of great games for both you and him included on there.

Last week Xbox put a bunch of licensed games on gamepass ( paw patrol, transformers and Ben 10). My 7 year old son is having a ball with them.

  • Hard back…lasts longer than paper back…7 year old. Don't forget the crayons.

    • Yea, but why pay more for a book that only gets read once

      • +1

Because the joy of reading is one the greatest gift that parents can give their kids

  • +1

since you cant even buy a PS5, the switch wins anyway

  • +1

I can't believe this is even a question… Switch all day every day and twice on sundays

  • When I first read this I thought you were offering a swap….I have a spare Switch but dont really want another child.

You gonna buy your 7 year old kid a ps5/switch and make them addicted to gaming from young age? What kind of parent are you

    • +2

Quiet a good one. Child is very engaged and extremely social. Speaks confidently to adults and engages in social play.

Of course he won't have unlimited free range on the console, to think otherwise is just silly.

  • A switch is more suitable but consider getting an xbox as gamepass has literally hundreds of games so ends up saving you huge amounts of money.

I think I've only bought 2 games in the last 2 years since they weren't on gamepass.

Very good value and saves you a lot of money.

  • Switch is great, especially if his into the whole pokemon saga.

However its very expensive and games rarely go on sale, eg. Breath of The Wild - The main game everyone loves is still full price 5 years after release.
Digital games are not cheap enough to make it worthwhile for most games.
Switch has some great co-op games and the motion control games are fun in multiplayer.

    PS5 - impossible to get.
Xbox with gamepass is incredibly good value

Xbox Series S with game pass for a year, will keep your kid occupied with hundreds of games

  • Both are great consoles in their own ways. But even in a hypothetical setting where you could readily buy a PS5, I'd recommend a Switch. It's got a massive lineup of child-friendly games. Many of which you can play in couch-coop mode, which makes for great family fun. In contrast, PlayStation exclusives excel at having great storytelling with complex narratives. That's awesome for a more mature audience, but a bit too much for a 7 year old child. Also, your child will appreciate the fact that (s)he can use the Switch on the go, eg. during a car ride (I strongly recommend buying a screen protector for this reason).

The fact that the PlayStation is much more powerful and delivers more of a graphical punch matters little for children. The often cartoony looking Switch games don't need this level of visual fidelity anyway. The PS5 is also quite a bit more expensive.

On and lastly, Nintendo has forever invested into games that appeal to a (stereotypical) female taste. Examples are Animal Crossing, Pokemon, Splatoon and others. That's a plus when gifting it to a girl who prefers this game design.

  • As a side note, If you have a technical ability/time I would say build your own htpc download emulators, wait for sales, cloud gaming etc. For the easy route would go with switch

    Please limit their screen time.

  • The Switch has more exclusives than the PS4 and PS5 combined. It has more couch coöps that are fun to play with the kids. It has more family friendly games and it comes with two controllers. If you’re watching the tv then no problem cause the kid can just play the Switch in handheld mode. The cartridges are quick and easy to use and if you buy digital, the Switch stores WAY more games compared to the PS5, especially if you insert a micro SD, cheap enough too when they’re on sale.

The PS5 is a good system but it lacks… fun. My six-year-old plays both but prefers the games on the Switch as they are more kid focused.

Together, we’ve played through: Zelda BotW, Mario (so many Mario games), Donkey Long, Luigi’s Mansion, Zelda Link’s Awakening, Metroid Dread, Yoshi’s Crafted World, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Guacamelee! Goose Game, and Scott Pilgrim - and others.

The PS5 games are more violent and dark and a bit much for him. Though he likes Fortnite on it cause it looks better and we’re about to play Kena and It Takes Two. And multiplatform games tend to be cheaper on the PS5 but you lose out on portability.

If we could only own one system it would be the Switch. Without a doubt.

And then there’s all the games that I’ve played through without him. It’s a brilliant system with heaps of great games.

  • I have a 7 yr old and I think the Switch is better. However he mixes it up all the time, sometimes Switch, sometimes Ipad, sometimes Wii U, sometimes he doesnt bother with any of them for months at a time and enjoys my Nintendo 64 or Game Cube. So basically go for Nintendo 👌🏻

  • Switch - has SNES, N64, and Sega Megadrive emulators on it too now (have to buy Nintendo online subscription) which are really fun.

  • +1

I’ve kept all my systems that I played so my kids can try. Wii, Wii U, Switch, PS2, PS3, PS4, DS lite, 3DS XL.

Also PSP and 2013 Nexus tablets plus iPad

Currently exploring wii sports alone is already plenty of fun

I’m skipping ps5 imo not worth it atm

Having said this I do not spoil kids with screen time. I go play outdoors when I can with them

  • Mate just get the Series S and emulate all the good games from all the previous consoles (including previous Nintendo consoles). Plus you can get game pass and there're regular sales on digital games for Xbox, especially if you have gamepass/gold.

  • Xbox with gamepass
