Buying a Circular Saw for Fairly Regular DIY

thinking of buying
https://sydneytools.com.au/product/hikoki-c7mfah6z-1010w-75-…
because of the slightly deeper cuts + better warranty

instead of
https://sydneytools.com.au/product/makita-hs7600sp-1200w-185…

or an ozito

Any thoughts? Experiences?

Thanks in advance

  • I'm no toolhead, but I know Makita is a good brand but never heard of Hikoki

    • +2

Hikoki was previously known as Hitachi. It's a premium brand like Makita.

      • At that makes sense, must be new rebranding

        • New branding because Hitachi sold off their power tools division. Hikoki is not a part of the Hitachi group.

    • Don't you remember the song.. "give me my Hikoki back mack"?

    • Hikoki is a great brand used by professionals. Their battery nail guns are some of the best there is.

  • Both good brands for sure. You’re definitely not looking for cordless at this point?

  • I wouldn't mind but is it worth the higher price? I'm currently in the ozito ecosystem…

    • Ozito is fine, its defs no Bosch blue or Dewalt or Makita

I had an ozito and burnt the motor out cutting hardwood, bought a Bosch blue to replace it - cost about 6x what the ozito originally cost me

Ozito have a great warranty for their price range and bunnings is so easy to take back things

  • I went through the same though process years ago. I have the Hitachi C7MFA & its loud, 90 revolutions/second. The base plate is fully cast metal & the saw works very well. The Makita base plate is made of multiple pieces.

If I was buying again I would go battery. Makita has a lot of new 40V tools. I have the Makita 18v reciprocating saw & its great for "power gardening".

    • Why battery? Less noise? Portability? Is it worth the cost?

      • +4

Portability mainly. The 240V saw seems a bit dangerous, its so fast & loud, they is no brake after you take your finger off the trigger. I spend ages checking things are safe.

  • Been using ozito for two years, no issues

  • +1

Get the one with the most common blade size.

    • Wish I realised that before I got my aeg. Has a slightly smaller 216mm blade instead of the more common 254mm. Hard to find blades

  • +1

Hikoki used to be hitachi koki, the power tools division of hitachi that was partially owned (and managed) by koki.

They're a premium manufacturer. I would put their stuff on par with the premium end of makita (because makita make some budget stuff too).

I would go the hikoki in this instance. Such good warranty and same price.
Get some good spare blades though. Don't buy the cheapo no-name replacements.

  • 90% handyman I know use Makita in Sydney

  • Got Makita cordesd and DeWalt cordless. The Makita is good on bench mounted to go through lots in one go. But occasional hand stuff I find the cordless much more convenient and a bit lighter too. But that could just show the age of my makita.

  • +1

It’s also about what cuts decent flat angles and 90’. Less blade wobble and movement in the angle clamp mechanism when in use. Cheaper constructed brands and won’t maintain this as long. Nothing worse than doing a straight flat cut and it comes out crooked.

  • The majority of carpenters use Makita, they have tried all the good brands, majority come back to Makita, there is better than Makita but very expensive, this advice is for only circular saws, drop saws etc, not general other tools.
I know this because my son is a carpenter and he has seen what I mentioned above countless times over many years, and got this same view from most chippies he has met, go makita

  • If you already have Ozito batteries then I'd recommend starting with their brushless circular saw and see how you go.

Either it'll work well, and you then get the benefits of cordless/warranty/compatibility, or you can return it to get something bigger once you've tried it.

    • That’s not bad logic. I rarely use my cord circ saw now as the cordless is so convenient. Although I’m considering a brushless upgrade as the brushed version doesn’t have a lot of grunt.

  • got an aeg corded at bunnings. Loving it so far for simple use
