Is This Picasso Painting Real?

Some dude selling a "Picasso Study" for $320 on Facebook Marketplace. I was pretty sure its fake, then convinced a bit by the gallery stamps and then back to thinking its fake as he is a graffiti artist in his profile and selling "plausible" real artworks of Whitely, DC Joker character study, Basquiat, Herring, Renoir, Dali and Warhol. In all his listings he cites needing cash, Deceased estate, no COA or verification and selling the artwork for way below what a genuine one would cost? Does this seem like the MO for art fraud? I thought it would be funny to ask ozbargain anyway.

Back:

"Picasso Study, purchased at a deceased auction in Ohio I’m going to Tassie at 6:45am, the deal is only on the table for tonight only. As I can just send it to the Picasso foundation to find out its authenticity but I need quick cash, it even has a gallery resonet number. If it’s not real it’s 1 in 2 odds, it’s as a sure a bet as you get."

"Pretty neat! Hard to tell, the paper looks old and seems to have been wet from paint? Is is painted or a print/lithograph? Have you tried a magnifying glass? One thought; paintings like these don’t just get ‘lost’.

Why not show your photo’s to one of the galleries/museums listed verso. They might be able to help. Picasso museum"

I buy all of my Picassos on Facebook marketplace. None of my purchases have been fake, so 0/0 FTW.

      • -1

        0/0 = 1 = 100%
…so all your Facebook Picasso's were fake?

        • +2

          0/0 =/= 1

          • +1

            @DashCam AKA Rolts: .
Well, it's not true that 0/0 is NOT 1.
The answer can actually be ANY number.
            It is not defined.

…so imma stick with 1 as that is a possible answer :D

          • @DashCam AKA Rolts: Sure it does. You just need very large values of zero

        • +2

          0/0 is undefined.

        100% legit

    • This comment is so under-rated

      • It’s a good thing.

The majority of the OzB community should be skeptical, when judging the authenticity of creative art. ;)

If only there were a way to create art and provide irrefutable provenance. 🤔

    • +1

I don’t think there is a way for real world art.

Did Picasso have a public key?

Congrats….at least they now have one extra 'hey, did you hear about that one' historical story for their Christmas parties.

(Though they likely dont appreciate you wasting their time)

I think they would be interested to know if art fraud is being conducted using their art gallery stamp

OP stop trying to stir shit up for your discord channel.

    • I'm not I didn't link it anywhere here

Are you sure it's not a licensed reproduction or print that is sold to galleries. Supposing whoever owned Picasso's estate liked earning money, and these things are officially licensed but not very valuable, though licensed prints sometimes can be quite valuable. But suppose these ones were oversold and are not valuable today.

  • Even in the remote chance it's a real Picasso, it's so ugly. I know people go gaga over anything Picasso touched and throw money at it, but this piece is just hideous.

  • +2

High pressure sales tactic: "Available tonight only!" Check

Could sell it for a lot more later, but offers a terrible excuse: Check

Features artist that is known by everyone and widely counterfeited: Check

I'm surprised the seller doesn't say they live on an oil rig and need the money to buy an overpriced car for their son, who is about to attend Charles Darwin university.

I'll just add that a certificate of authenticity means nothing. If someone can fake the artwork, they can fake the piece of paper too.

  • +3

The most grating aspect of that listing is the purported odds of 1 in 2, like the two options (real or fake) inherently equate to a 50/50 chance.

    • Yes he confused the number of outcomes with likelihood

  • Man lockdown and covid is really screwing with people's mind.

reminds me of the teaching van skit from Armstrong and Miller

  • Did Picasso ever paint tubbies? I've never seen one not that I'm an art student.

  • +1

Forgive me but it is people just like you that form the overwhelming statistics of being rorted each year by scammers.

Sit down with a pen and paper… jot down your thoughts; All Picasso paintings/drawings are accounted for. If real, it would be worth thousands. An Art Museum, or Art Dealer would have bought it by now.
Now jot down the what ifs; It could be real, it could have been overlooked, it could have been passed down by family members, it could be part of stollen antiquities by the Germain in wwii.
Now jot down; Am I so stupid (not you) to even entertain such notions? Am I so uneducated (not you) that I have absolutely no idea how to spot SCAMs? Am I one of the gullible who are potentially rorted each year in Australia (yes possibly you)?

  • +1

If you've got any money left over, I have this fabulous bridge in Sydney…

  • It would probably take more than $350 in time and materials to make this fake painting.
In that sense it's a bad deal.

  • +1

OP I think you should definitely buy it, then take it to the Pawn Stars boys for appraisal :)

In all seriousness, according to Google, the last Picasso painting was sold for $104 million, so there you is your answer :)

  • +1

The art market is the ultimate in label lunacy. If if it is a Picasso its resale value is $60 million, if it is not its resale value is zero.

  • Picasso was astonishingly prolific, but don't let that fool you - the fact that this this chap is selling for cash only and has many unrelated works for sale, is very dodgy IMHO

  • Slavity…

  • Thanks OP, I needed a good laugh today.

    • Pleasure to be of service

  • -1

This lacks any real sense of artistry and sounds like a scam. Not an expert but an art lover. Picasso usually has really strong composition. This one is weak and the brush work is messy. Would give it a miss.

    • Yeah I thought it looked off…

  • +1

    Can confirm genuine Picasso.
Jeez, why do we have to put up with this shite in the forums.
Come here looking for entertainment & all we find is crap

    • Come here looking for entertainment

Didn't realise Sydney was that boring…

  • Four reports, must be from people also trying to sell fake art.

  • i hope he also has "Interchange" by Willem de Kooning for a similar price.

  • +1

ok, the painting looks amateur. The seller has literally put it in dirt to take a picture. stuff on the back is from what look's like a release of prints in 1981. The front looks newer or somehow off for me. Best case is it's a print and you get them for under a $100 - $200. Some eventually gain in value though.

  • +1

One of the biggest red flags apart from a price that is too good to be true, is the seller trying to create a sense or urgency, to trick you into buying something you normally may have spent more time studying/checking. I wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole.

  • My picassos real, I'll nft it to you wait….

  • Judging from past posts as well, this dude (the OP) is either super naive individual or trying out methods to discover best ways to scam people.

  • Troll post and you all are feeding him. Can you ignore users on this site. I would recommend that.

  • Salvator Mundi, the US$450.3 million supposed to be Leonardo da Vinci but probably not, was sold for £45 in 1958.

I wish you could put lmao emoticons here because the art market does make me lmao.

    • Yes, I can imagine the sale in 1958:

"Hey chum, I'm catching the ship to Majorca this evening and ya gotta buy this painting right now. I could sell it for £200 when I get back but I really need the money now. It's a Da Vinci, I swear on Aunt Bessy's life!"

  • It’s a genuine copy authorised by the estate to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of Picasso. Not q fake, but not painted by the original artist.
