Best Way to Pay Split Bill in a Group

When one person pays a bill which is to be split within a group, what is the best way to transfer (pay) money to the group "leader"? Is it a dumb idea for the leader to give his bank account to every group member? I am thinking about not needing everyone to install an app.

Thanks.

PayID - mobile or email address.

    • Could you please elaborate a little bit? Thanks.

        https://payid.com.au/

Creates an alias for your bank account

      • Does your bank support sending payments using PayID? Does your friends support receiving them?

My friends and I all have our payids attached to our mobiles, so we can just zoom each other money and its there within 5 seconds.

        Great tech.

Best way imo would be for each person to EFT/Direct Debit their shares to one person and that person pays the bill (including their own share).

I used to own a house and rent out 3 rooms to my mates and that seemed to be the best way, I used to put the bill on the fridge and write the total of what each person owed with their name (Total bill / 4) and they would tick or cross their name out when they issued the payment to my account. I didn't have any issues with receiving payment as I wasn't renting out to muppets.

Why would it be a dumb idea? Unless you don't trust them with your bank account details.

  • Another option is BeemIt
    https://www.beemit.com.au/

    • Can you use it without the app though?

I am thinking about not needing everyone to install an app.

  • Splitwise works well too.

How good would it be if there were some physical way of doing this, where everyone puts their share in the middle of the table (rounded up of course), and this all gets used to pay the bill

    • Tbh I haven't carried cash in 2 years. I only keep some in the house for Facebook marketplace / gumtree purchases and sales. And some coins in the car for parking meters.

Where do the coins regenerate from?

Good question. I have a few jars of coins at home. I guess they'll run out eventually!

everyone pays a whole dinner once

try to be last and go to maccas instead of fine dining

      This is a horrible idea.

What if one person orders a $50 main because they wanted to get an aged steak, and someone else orders a salad because they had a big lunch. That same person also orders a drink, so now their tab is $60 and the poor salad person is $20.

Everyone pays their own way. Don't mooch off your friends.

  • To be 100% honest

Best Way to Pay Split Bill in a Group

is to split it on the actual spot aka, if the bill is $100, on 5 people, ask everyone to pay the restaurant, cafe, Uber, woolies/coles Etc shop $20 per person.

Once you go out of that place, I dont really trust any one of friends to be that reliable enough to be paying me back, i always have had to remind them a dozen times before they paid me in past. Since then,
always been YOUR shop YOU pay

Only other possibility is ask everyone to pay for a Visa/Mastercard/Eftpos Giftcard, (EVERYONE PAYS EQUAL SHARE OF THAT GIFT CARD VALUE AT TIME OF PURCHASE, then group can just spend it wherever they want)— They might have to pay the $5.95/$7.95 Fee though for that

    • If your mates aren't paying you back equally are they really your mates

PayID before you leave the restaurant.

  • Up bank slicing is good feature for those on up
Beem it is best for small amounts such as restaurants
PAYID if you don't have beemit

Make the restaurant do a bit of basic math and generate individual bills. Or by old custom if you invited them out to lunch in the first place, the pleasure of paying for it all can be yours.

    • Yeah, I think if you ask someone to lunch, you pay.

      • wut no.

If I ask you "hey wanna get lunch?" I'm not offering to buy you lunch.

        What crazy world is this.

  • Double post.

  • Splitwise, and then payID

  • I've been through this crap and left with stuff that people didn't pay for.
I now get everyone to go up, one by one, and pay as they order their food and drinks. Unless you want to shout everyone I avoid places that wont let us do this.

  • Thanks to everyone who responded. I chosed to use payID and everyone involved is happy with it.

I used to use group dinners as an ATM. Collect cash from the group, pay on credit card (and collect points). They were the good old days.

Now, just don’t go out for dinner.
