From time to time I enrol for a trial, grab 1-2 audiobooks, and cancel my subscription.
Just a note: the same Amazon account can create different Audible accounts in different countries, they are independent - so basically you can get new books for each one of them, and switching between login country in the Audible app is quite easy.

    • +4

If you download them then they are available cross accounts, so you don't have to switch countries

      • Thanks, I didn't think about that.

I've tried audible once. The basic idea of audio books doesn't work for me as I'm unable to concentrate while the author is narrating.

    • +1

I'm unable to concentrate while the author is narrating

I more or less find this to be the case too. I've probably listened to one book for a decent amount of time, but still didn't finish it.

    • +7

I find it good for riding / driving when it’s mindless effort

    • +1

It depends what you're doing. I find it lends itself quite well to a walk around a park or something mindless. Can't do it if I have anything to distract me e.g. driving or on my phone etc. Oh and noise cancelling helps!

      • Although bookmarking feature is there on audible, I find it difficult to go back and refer to refer something, unlike a kindle ebook or a physical copy of a book

    • +10

Audiobooks are a great way to absorb 1/3 of the information in a regular book

      • +2

I've always found that I hear things that I don't recall reading when I first read through books.

      • +1

I feel like this depends very much on what you like to read. I don't feel like I can remember any less vs when I physically read the book but I am not reading extremely difficult books that require a lot of analysis.

Reading something like a Jack Reacher novel or a Bobiverse book I can easily recall what has happened and carry a conversation about the books with other people who have read them. It would probably be harder for a book that was six translations deep of an ancient work.

    • +6

As others have said - you need to be doing something where you have nothing else to draw your attention.

I'll listen walking, driving, doing chores etc. I can't listen while on my phone, computer or anything else that provides a distraction or I miss things.

I haven't read a physical book in probably over 5 years, but this year alone I've listened to 32 books. If you had read those books I could have a full on conversation about them as well. I'd also argue that audiobooks are superior to physical books since the narrator generally conveys emotion really well and has distinct voices for characters.

    • +1

I mostly use it to go over books I've already read for this very reason.

    • +1

As someone that's never enjoyed reading, I love audiobooks. Don't try and listen while working or something, but I listen while driving/cleaning/lying around.

    • I'm the same, but it's also great background noise, so non fictions are great to have since the details doesn't matter that much.

    • To be clear, you can't concentrate on the audiobook?
Or you can't concentrate on other things?
Cos..you're not supposed to read a book while doing homework, either.

    • Reading usually puts me to sleep after 5min. Audible means I can make use of my ears when walking. I can listen to the same book 5 times, and usually by then I can memorise all the important bits. It's no different to watching marvel movies repeatedly every 6 month.

  • Thanks OP, I've found the email in spam

  • Nothing for me. Must be targeted.

  • +5

Thanks OP.. totally (would have) missed it.

    • Likewise. Thanks!

  • Got it

  • Thank you, OP, would’ve missed the email if not this post! It was sent out at 5AM.

  • Try this code see if it is not targeted " ADBLBSKDMK7SBDMYC4 "

    • +1

i tried, its a single used generated code.
      from audible:
"This promotional code has already been claimed. If you think we've made a mistake, please contact Customer Care."

  • note you can hit redeem but login under any audible account and get it .

but the code is unique and 1 time use

  • Awesome got one

  • Thank you OP. Would never have seen it there if you hadn't posted about this.

  • Have not received the email, but recently bought 3 credits for ~$35. Went through all the HP books and now going through all the Expanse books. Absolutely love audiobooks as I love reading but never find the time anymore. It's good to have playing when driving, exercising, or even just doing chores.

  • Thanks OP. I actually received the email and saw it but it didn’t click that it was a freebie. Duh

  • I listen often at night and fall asleep to it.

It is target as my account has the email and my son’s account doesn’t.

  • +3

If you're after a recommendation, the Andy Serkis narration of Lord of the Rings (three separate books) is awesome!

    • +1

Actually preferred Rob Inglis version, but it's a very personal thing for sure.

      • I can see how, if you listened to the Rob Inglis version first, his voice is what you would associate with the story.

For me, I found the audio quality of the Serkis version to be clearer and loved his vocal range (although he does struggle on one or two songs). There is a section where Merry (or is it Pippin) impersonates Gandalf, and somehow he manages to make it sound just right…

Either way, you can't go wrong with LoTR for quantity or quality in an audiobook.

        • +1

The audio quality for sure is 10x better with Serkins.

    • +1

The golem parts are so damn good. He reads the hobbit too.

  • +2

Thanks. Got book 19 of Expeditionary Force. Best series on Audible.

    • I was confused for a second but then realized you're counting mavericks and the novellas.

Sometimes it feels like Alanson is only thinking about the current book and not the future ones he has planned. He said he wanted a few more Mavericks books, but then wrote the Legion into ExForce…

But I'm this far into the series I may as well finish it. Currently 10% into Fallout.

  • Thanks! I didn't notice it!

I actually dunno what to do with this month's 2 credit. I haven't researched anything in particular. This was my last month of the 8 dollar trio

    • +2

It is skewed towards personal development, but I enjoyed those 2:
      - atomic habits
      - essentialism

    • Anything by Ryan Holiday.

  • Thanks heaps OP!!!

  • OMG a targeted deal that ACTUALLY worked for me. Thanks OP I had missed the email.

  • If you are a fan a Firefly, there is a great collection of books (16 and half books) you can get with a single credit - over 85 hours of listening for 1 credit! I loved it. Got to be the best kept secret on Audible. https://www.audible.com.au/pd/Galaxy-Outlaws-The-Complete-Bl…

  • A relative wants an Audible subscription for Christmas
Can anyone recommend the best way to give a gift of a year sub?
Discount gift cards or something similar and/or referral bonus?
    Thanks

  • Damn, don't have a gmail address, and I assume based on the poster's description that it is important.

  • wow thanks

I definitely would have missed it
