It feels like I won the lottery, but managed to order a PS5 (Disc edition) through Sony today for my partner for Christmas. This is where I’m a bit stuck as I am not a gamer, so no idea what game or games to get him. He plays Assassins Creed on PS4 a lot so I’m looking for game that’s kind of in that genre but will make the most of the PS5 specs. Any suggestions welcome! Thanks in advance.

Awesome. Thanks for the advice. Looks like Sony have a special on PS Plus ($39 for the year https://www.playstation.com/en-au/ps-plus/join-ps-plus/) so I think I’ll grab that.
100% get the PS plus deal for your partner, its a requirement for most online play, and you get a free game or two each month (quality varies greatly though).
The Games that you get with the PS Plus collection on PS5 are pretty much the best hits of the PS4 generation.
If he plays AC Games, he'll fine SpiderMan Miles Morales to have a similar gameplay loop. Hot top - get the Ultimate Edition and it comes with the remastered version of Spider Man for PS5, which has ray tracing and a longer story than Miles. Well worth it. I also think Ghost of Tsushima would fit this style, as well as Far Cry 6 (if he like shooty things) or AC Valhalla.
If he enjoys 3rd person shooters then Returnal is widely regarded as an amazing game, but it might not be everyones cup of tea. Same for Deathloop.
The new Ratchet and Clank looks amazing, but the gameplay is on the simpler side.

Further to Hybroid's suggestions, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a great game and a PS5 exclusive so looks amazing.

+1 for Rachet and Clank: Rift Apart but some guys might be turned off that it's a bit more family friendly. And I'd guess you cant go wrong with Spiderman: Miles Morales.
Far Cry 6 was good fun, and is a similar vibe to Assassins Creed except its a shooter.
If you get him that PlayStation Plus - then he gets access to all the best PS4 exclusive games too so whoever suggested that above is a genius
if he's a fan of assassins creed, he'll enjoy ghost of tsushima, which now has a ps5 "director's cut" edition as well

Beyond that, ask him what he wants to play, not random people as it's subjective. Would imagine Spider-Man, Miles Morales, Ghost of Tsushima and Horizon Zero Dawn are high on the want list.
Assassins Creed Valhalla is frequently cheap on offer too if that's his jam.
