Need some advice about selling on Facebook marketplace - return/refund policy

Hi guys, need some advice as I don't know much about facebook marketplace policy. Hope this is the correct place to ask btw.

I sold a pc liquid cooler through facebook marketplace yesterday because it could not fit in my case. I did put all photos of the product and also the screenshot of the product on Centrecom's online store. That screenshot showed the full name description, SKU number and the price. The seller came over and paid cash in front of my place. I opened the box and showed him everything is in the box as brand new. He was happy and paid off after negotiation.

Now the buyer contacted me again saying he bought the wrong product and wants to return. I googled a bit and found there are two version for the product, one is RGB ready (the one I have sold) and one is with RGB fans. Two versions are selling as two different names and photos on Centrecom. Given that I provided all details correctly and did ask the buyer to confirm that is what he wanted. Am I responsible to accept his request to return and refund him? I could not find any policy in this area.

Thank you in advance.

You're a private seller, not a retailer. Don't see why you have to refund him. Heck, even some retailers won't let you refund for change of mind, which is what this is.

Private seller, no refunds - especially for change of mind and especially since he saw it in person before purchase.

    No, no, no.

How do you know he hasn't killed it in the time he has had it, or switched it with a broken one?

You gave him every detail needed to work out if it was what he wanted, so if he stuffed up it is now his problem.

No refunds. You even had the original box that the buyer would've had the opportunity to peruse before handing money over.

Just tell him to onsell it for what he paid and move on.

  • Nope. You're a private seller, whatever policies and ACL don't apply to you.

Though keep in mind for the future, that the buyer knows where you live. Fingers crossed you don't come across an entitled crazy buyer.

Even ACL won't help you for change of mind.

Tell them money already spent, so unable to return. That way they can't argue. Suggest they can sell themselves.

He can resell it if it’s the wrong one, just like you did.

After its out of your hands you do not know what the buyer could of done to it, replaced it with a non working unit. Who knows.

You sold something as a private individual, you are not a store, you have no responsibility to provide a refund or return of any kind.

    Just say sorry no refunds.

  • Nope, you are not amazon and do not have a change of mind policy.

I could not find any policy in this area.

That's because there isn't one. Not your problem.

Hope this is the correct place to ask btw.

It is xKiTx, as is the Gumtree board where you posted the same question on Whingepool.

  • I think we all know the answer but need a diplomatic way to phrase it…although sometimes this can come across as being a push-over and then they try to argue until you give in.

Diplomatic way to rephrase what? You tell them to get stuffed and that's it.. and then.. "block".

That would work but unfortunatelly " The seller came over and paid cash in front of my place."

To OP - I'm a FB marketplace seller myself and highly recommend you don't sell valuable goods (geeky stuff, tech) in front of your house. There are horror stories on the news.

  • Facebook marketplace - return/refund policy

    There isn't one, buyer beware.

Offer to buy it back with a 50% restocking fee.
    They'll quickly go quiet.

    • +6

They might actually accept that offer if they've switched it with a busted one! 😂

      • then offer to buy it back with a 100% restocking fee. Lets see them switch back for a busted one and paying you for it.

  • Computer says no

  • Thank you all for your comments and opinions. The buyer is threatening me and god bless me…..

    • +6

If he's threatening you, and your safety is in danger, take it to the police

    • +1

      Block him lmfao

He knows where OP lives… should have met at a public place…

cash and not let buyer know where you live

        • Maybe call the bluff and if it does eventuate it will be a cool story for the forums.

(Seriously op if the guy is insane maybe just cop it this time…)

    • What? They bought something on Facebook and expect to return it because of their own stupidity of not doing research beforehand. they can't do anything about it.
Tell him that you will call the police if he comes on your property demanding a refund and throwing threats

  • +2

Take it back less your handling / processing / inconvenience fees…which may well amount to the price paid….or they can sell it on. Caveat emptor !

  • You got the wrong size and privately resold it. Now it's his turn. Let him resell it!! Not your problem.

Normally I would take it back just to avoid arguing, complications etc, but in this case you don't know if he damaged it or not.

  • Any updates OP?

    • I just ignored him, and put that chat into spam lol
