Buy iPad in the States?

Hey guys,

Heading to the States, have been meaning to get the new iPad as a pressie….is it definitely beneficial getting it in the US? Namely a proper Apple store?

Is there any tax concession or duty free or anything I should be wary about for more discount? With straight conversion between USD vs AUD prices I think I'm looking to save probs only ard $60

Thanks :)

  • Yes you need to factor in where you buy in the US.

US prices generally dont display their local sales taxes, made up of State and County, which can add from 0-12% to your cost. And there is no TRS

Factor in exchange rate costs, and risk if dollar drops further.

Compare to buying locally and using the TRS, that way you can use it before you go and load it with apps/movies/books etc. This saves you the GST

When you get to the US you can buy a AT&T prepaid sim, which I have activated with an Australian credit card. There are other providers but I didn't try them

Good thread here on how to do that http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1489616&p…

If you have a voip provider like Mynetphone pennytel etc, you can even use the ipad for making calls. Not great but a hell of a lot more effective and cheaper than roaming or trying to use a public phone.

If you are driving the USA there a free apps to find cheap petrol, stores nearby that have items cheaper - you just scan barcode, book hotels, maps etc.

There are free wifi spots as well, so you can skip the sim, but not if you are travelling around

  • +1, buy here and then use TRS.

Shop around for various discounts, getting woolworths cards at 5% off through entertainment book and buying from bigW/DickSmith is one of them

  • I am over in the states now, 90% of places are sold out.

Bigw is about the same price plus the dollar is shit at the moment

  • "Dollar is shit at the moment"

ahhhhhh……. I remember the good ole days when it took $1 AUD to buy $0.55 US. My ex sold the UD$ short and it was a dreadful ride when it went up from where we sold it at and we had margin calls, some of which he did not tell me about, until the AUD rose enough to make a pretty good amount of $.

Don't complain about parity. Sure as travellers, we'd like $2 for every $1, but we live in OZ and too much of a spike isn't good for the entire economy. Parity is pretty good.
