Low Bars Indoors with Mobile, Will Changing Providers Help?

Hello brain trust

Merry Christmas

I have a question for which I'm difficulty finding a straightforward answer online.

I live in Fitzroy North in Melbourne (inner suburb to those not in Victoria). We just moved into this property.

When we are outdoors the signal strength is good, but when inside I'm regularly dropping to one bar, and call quality becomes sketchy.
I'm on call for work, and I worry I may not be receiving all the calls now.

Do you guys think that changing provider, eg from optus who I'm currently with, to say Belong, will help?

If you do think it'll help, which do you suggest will be. Lst beneficial and why?

Many thanks!

Edit: thanks all. I'll just invite some friends over and check their reception. Feel a bit silly now.

Get a trial sim and find out

It's possible. Telstra's network is better in some areas and Optus in others. Try them and find out. We can't tell you definitively for your own residence.

Alternatively, invite some friends over and check their phone signals.

    • Ah damn. The latter option is smart. I feel stupid for not having thought of that! I'll just so that lol

User name checked out, in more ways than one… 😀

get some prepaid sim and try out, also you might want to use wifi calling if your phone and network supports it.

You should check which frequencies your network (e.g. Telstra) uses at your local tower that your handset also supports.

The 700-950MHz spectrum is better for indoor reception. People on this site often talks about "band 28"

Why not buy a belong Sim kit and give it a shot in your phone?

The inviting friends thing is a great idea but sometimes the phone you are using may have an impact.

Where I live I get 2 bars on Telstra vs 4 bars on Optus networks - indoors

Yep read that right, opposite of what you'd normally expect I know.
But makes a difference of being about 50Mbps faster for downloads..

Swapped between a Telstra provider and Optus provider various times throughout the years, and on various phones, same result

So yeah it could change things shrug

Edit: Oh and I'm in northern suburbs of Melbourne, just a fair few more suburbs up north than you ;)

  • I have reception issues so all my phone calls go via wifi, solved.

    • I didn't know this was actually possible. How does one set this up?

      • Figured out how to turn it on on Android. Is the toggle of the wifi calling switch all that is required??

        • Yeah that should be it. Hope it helps

          • @Drpepper666: Yeah it does! Wow. I'm annoyed I haven't been using it already. Jeez
