Hi guys,

Looking to buy a degreaser for bike chain. Anything worth buying from the one available at Bunnings…

Bike Juice is what I use. Concentrated can be used to degrease chain, and diluted it can be used to wash the rest of the bike. Can be bought at pretty much any LBS these days.

Last time I really needed to degrease a bike I used MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) and it worked a treat. Not ideal unless you have access to solvents and don't mind using them.

    Soak in kerosene.

This. I remove the chain and rattle around in an old ice cream container with petrol. Works a treat on both dirt bike and push bike. Don't forget to lube it up when reinstalled.

Kero, but the low odour kind if indoors/garage. $2 degreaser from SCA works jut fine too. Don't over think it.

any degreaser from bunnings or auto parts store. after you degrease it make sure all of the degreaser is gone and dried before lubing. wax it if you can, it is awesome.

    • Yes, wax rules, no more greasy and dirty drivetrain

      • agreed, i didn't do it right away because it was fairly new. then gave it a try, and i can't ever do anything else now. wax is amazing.

        • What sort of wax would be useful? Anything from Bunnings?

          • @RSmith: You can buy wax based chain lubes.

Or if you want to go really hardcore can buy a block of paraffin wax and melt it in an old pot and bath the chain (I just went to a craft candle store and they sold me a big block for $10, they were very interested in my proposed us for it ) and keep reusing it

There are heaps of youtube vids on it, and theories on what else you should add
For best results need to start with anew chain and get rid of all the existing lubricant first

    • Can you please recommend a good wax product?

  • Thanks for the suggestions guys/girls.

As said, don't forget to grease it up when done.

I don’t use anything to degrease them. Just use Rock n roll lube.

I use wd40 to clean bike stuff.

    • Just following this up: applying rock and roll, then wiping down the chain with a rag leaves it fairly clean but takes about 30seconds to do. I’d much rather this method than going to a full degrease, removing the chain etc. There’s also no risk of getting degreaser into places where it shouldn’t be if degreasing on the bike. it’s so quick and easy to rock and roll, I’d rather be riding the bike, upgrading parts or building a new bike.

  • The Morgan Blue degreaser is alright, though the bottle it comes in kinda leaky.

Mostly don't use it, though, because most the grease can be removed from a chain using a cloth + relubling (rock n roll gold).

  • I just use dishwashing liquid in some hot water plus a couple of different brushes and never had an issue.

  • I use a Parktools chain cleaner with warm water and dishwashing liquid to remove the solids and some oil/grease.

If there is still a lot of grease left, I was recommended the Motortech heavy duty degreaser.

Has anyone tried to clean their chain / chainring, casette and derailleur with a pressure cleaner? I did once and it did a very very good job. However it blew off virtually all lube so I had to relube all of it again.

clean their chain / chainring, casette and derailleur with a pressure cleaner?

Not a good idea, if you get too close to your bottom bracket or wheel bearings, it may remove lube that you don't notice causing slow, long term damage.

A cyclist I know, removes his chain from the bike and does the finish stage in an ultra sonic cleaner. Chains are like new, but need careful relubing, as there is absolutely nothing left on the chain after doing this.

  • Yesterday I received park tool chain cleaner, yellow muc off degreaser, pink muc off wash and morgan blue degreaser from wiggle.
    Will start testing them shortly.

  • I use a Park Tools Cyclone Chain Scrubber: https://www.bikebug.com/park-tool-cyclone-chain-scrubber-cm-…

and Simple Green Orange Concentrate Cleaner: https://www.bunnings.com.au/simple-green-1l-orange-concentra…

Then run the Chain Scrubber with water and a couple of drops of dish detergent. Dy with a soft cloth, air dry before reapplying lube.
