Cheap DIY Taro Bubble Tea Powder for Bubble Milk Tea?

Looking to do simple Taro Bubble Tea at home. Already have the tapioca pearls. Will try just plain powder in hot water then add milk. If still needs more flavour then might try fructose syrup or look for what the shops put in it.

But yeah for those who do home made taro milk bubble tea what ingredients do your get and order and what works or doesn't work? Wondering if I can make it at home cheaper and probably also save on wasteful packaging if I buy my own reusable cup and straw. I won't probably save much to be honest going the home made route but if I shave a few dollars off per litre then it might be worth it

Yeah how much do you guys normally get 500ml of bubble milk tea for in your area with and without pearls. Local does about 500ml for $5.20 so $10.40 for 1L. Add $0.50 for tapioca pearls. Add $1.00 for extra 200ml of just milk maybe some extra powder I assume. Total is $6.70 for 700ml taro bubble milk tea with tapioca pearls

    • Oh no I haven't but it looks good.

I wonder if they have taro flavour as that is what I'm mainly after.

      That or cookies and creme.

Looks good though might be worth a try.

      Thanks.

This is what I was thinking of giving a try.

That and buy from some Asian grocery stores and do some experimenting.

I have already found the taro powder, tapioca pearls and fructose.

Milk I think is normal full cream milk afaik.

If it turns out good I can get more toppings like jelly and whip cream which should be easy to find.

      • I’ve tried Avalanche, Chatime and Lipton bubble tea kits from Coles. Chatime was the better of the three followed by Lipton. Avalanche was just passable.

        • +1

Ok thanks this was the intel I gathered also from other reviews.

What made the flavour different was it wildly different or just lower in strength and overall flavour.

I do want to try them all just to see for myself but a lot of people are saying to avoid Avalanche completely.

Chatime does get a lot of good reviews and Lipton was in the middle.

          • @AlienC: Oops sorry I meant woolies not Coles.

Yeah, I heard Avalanche wasn’t good either but I wanted to try each brand for myself out of curiosity so I got Avalanche when it was at least a dollar or so off. I tried the caramel milk tea for Avalanche. I couldn’t taste any tea flavour whatsoever. Reminded me of the flavour you get from Sippa straws. Pearls were very sweet and were a terrible texture (partly disintegrated and soft). The paper straws were useless and collapsed pretty fast when wet.

Also keep in mind each brand only asks for 250mls of liquid. So it’s a fairly small drink compared to store bought which are 500-700mls

            • @Chookt: Oh wow yeah nah then it's not worth it at all.

The average pricing at a store is

              $5 500ml
              $6 700ml

I think it was something like $2 a serving for the diy packs so 250ml is barely beating store price plus you don't get the sealed cup and everything.. Only benefit I see really going diy or getting bulk ingredients is less waste in terms of cups.

I have been doing some shopping and maths and the bulk packs work out to about half price if going it yourself which is not that bad if you plan to be doing this for a long time.

Ultimately I see it like any other good item you pay for the quality and expertise of the chef / worker and so that you don't have to stuff it up or make a mess in your own kitchen and do clean up.

I can see going diy or bulk pack good for say an event or party but I think on your own it's a bit finicky.. Lots of prep work not sure if entirely worth it compared to just conveniently buying it and less stress.

              • @AlienC: I didn’t realise how disappointingly small the serving size was until I bought it and went to make a drink. Not worth it not just because of the serving size to price ratio but because of the taste too.

If you want less waste then you can buy your own reusable bubble tea cup. I just bought one. Better for the environment but PITA to remember to take with you and to carry around.

Also just decided to try the bubble tea club mentioned in the post below. Not convinced all the trouble to make a drink is worth it yet.

                • @Chookt: Yeah the savings don't seem that much compared to just buying it from the store.

Being able to add extra pearls is nice I guess.

Even the bubble tea grocers it seems the price will be very similar to just getting store bought its basically good I think if you have the extra energy to make it yourself every day before or after work.

I really wish someone tries to make a 2L Taro Bubble Milk Tea drink available to buy from grocery stores.

                  I reckon it would sell.

Maybe oak and the other flavoured milk companies are trying to stop that because it is one of their largest direct competitors.

  • I heard great reviews from bubble tea club. Even thought i haven't tried them.

    • Final report is that they are way too expensive and overpriced. Nice branding and everything but cheaper to get it in bulk from happy cup and then just use sugar and long life milk from Coles.

Should be around $2-4 per large 700ml serve and this includes tapioca pearls but no creamer.

Honestly it's only about $2-4 cheaper than my local or half price so if I'm busy from work or in a hurry getting it from the store is probably better because also no clean up just throw away the container.. Plus there is the potential to stuff up or have an accident at home making it etc or pests getting into the ingredients and ruining it etc so quite a lot of cons and risks for basically a 50% saving and loss of convenience..

Personally for me it might just be a nice small thing or hobby to do every few days for awhile to keep my brain and sanity going long story short home life is a little bit dim and slow on the weekends.. Work is actually fun and keeping me awake and busy if you can believe that.

But yeah for anyone else looking into this it seems to be the best way is to get the flavour powder of choice from happy cup and pearls from happy cup or other cheap bulk store then get sugar and milk from Coles to basically substitute the fructose and creamer.. Well creamer can still be optional after everything is said and done.

  • Commit, and buy a whole bag of powder, plus creamer. Checkout sunwide.com.au
Wholesalers. About $20 for 1kg from memory. Much nicer than the 1-shot half-made packet stuff I tried from grocers.

    • This is what I am thinking of doing.

I am assuming this should make at least maybe 50 regular 500ml servings if my maths is correct.

Maybe 25 servings if I am doing 1L of Taro Bubble Milk Tea per serving.

Then I just need to add fructose and tapioca pearls.
