Cheapest Decent Burr Coffee Grinder?

Got the Aldi Delonghi Dedica for $169. It works fine, now it is time to get an upgrade from the $15 Kmart grinder.

Model I'm considering so far, with several good reviews:
The Sunbeam Grindfresh Multigrinder. Pretty sure I'll get it for $70-$80 again, has been there and below a few times in the past.

What's the cheapest burr grinder (suitable for Espresso) that you were happy with? We're no coffee connoisseurs, will most likely stick with Aldi beans, had some from Airjo and didn't notice much difference. Target price for the grinder $70 (happy to wait for a special), hard limit is $100.

  • Breville Smart Grinder Pro. Out of budget though

Breville The Dose Control Pro Coffee Grinder $200. exactly the same as the smart grinder pro $250 without the lcd screen and is $50 cheaper.
also if you can wait, it will go down to 149, so $100 cheaper then the smart grinder pro.

    buy once, cry once.

  • I used to have a similar dedica with older burr grinder Breville BCG 450. I ended up upgrading to Smart grinder pro.

  • I had a $70 hand grinder. I wasn't happy with it. I don't know if sub $100 and 'happy' goes together for an espresso suitable grinder.

Of course, you may not be as anal as me about your grind. It makes a huge difference to the shot though.

the grinder you have listed is the EM440, which is suppsed to be the same as EM480 except for body construction (440 is plastic while 480 is metal), the EM480 was probably best price/performance grinder until the Breville Smart Grinder came along, so if you can get it for $80, definitely go for it.

EM480 cost like $170 - $180, at that price you might as well get a Breville Smart Grinder.

I have both grinders, and to my unsophisticated palette anyway, the coffee taste the same between the two grinders, but the "smart" features on the Breville is definitely more convenient. Also due to the design of the Sunbeam, there will usually be some coffee grinds trapped in the chute after grinding, so you will need to rock it back and forth to get everything out, whereas the Breville is a top-down design so it won't have this issue.

    • Thanks, great comparison!

I had a look at the EM440 and EM480, took the top off and looked at the mechanism. Can confirm, they appear identical. As far as I can tell the EM480 is just prettier with the stainless steel finish.

I've got 15% discounted gift cards from this deal. Next time TGG have a 10% off or some other kind of sale it will be my target price.

    • Ahoy!

Sorry for replying to an old post, but you seem quite knowledgeable. I want to buy a Breville Smart Grinder, since my friend has an BCG820 /A model. However, retailers seem to only sell a BCG820BSS model. I've also seen someone selling 'BCG820 /B' model.

I was hoping you might be able to educate me on the differences, if there are any?
