        • yeah. thats what i meant

Gel materials have a heat capacity of about 30 minutes. So… after about a half hour, they're just as warm as any memory foam mattress.

On the upside, if you move to another position on the bed, it'll cool you down again. But on the downside, if you're moving around voluntarily, you're not really sleeping.

    • Any recommendations for something better?

      • Not really. Bedding is a complicated area of discussion because of the number of types, and the body types, and the preferences, as well as good information only coming from long term usage.

Memory foam is great for conforming to body shape and adequately distributing body weight (at least for me as a back sleeper), but bad for (as in good at) retaining heat. I tend to sleep with a ceiling fan on all the time, and frequently use the airconditioning in summer to cope. Which to be fair, makes for a very comfortable sleep, without long term back pain issues.

I just wish it weren't so warm after laying down in it for a bit :P

        • The new ones from Tempur with the Cooltouch 2.0 covers have been very good at dissipating heat, unlike gel which doesn't really work once all the heat has been absorbed.

      • @locky2912: I got rid of a memory foam mattress topper/protector and replaced with a cheapie Kmart "cotton" filled protector. I don't notice as much heat retention now. Perhaps stick to natural filling?
