Make OzBargain private and registrations Invite only?

Hey guys, what are your thoughts ?

Recently, reading ozbargainers posts such as 'OZ bargain getting too popular for its own good'.

I personally think, it should stay the way it is, it has given me so much!

I am addicted.

What about you ?

No. This website is all about its community, the more members we have, the more deals we can know about. There's no need to be selfish and block others from getting deals.

Maybe some really popular deals should only be visible to registered users? Like the dick smith gaming sale coming up!!!!

    • Might work better if Dicksmith wasn't advertising the sale in every way possible.

I wouldnt have known about it if it wasnt on Ozbargain!

      • That DSE one is already making it's rounds on gaming forums and blogs. Hard not to notice really.

    • Who decides if they are "really popular" At that point it would be already out there.

      • Maybe there should be some kind of voting system on each post, if X many registered users vote/click on this button, then the deal will be hidden from guest users.

Yes the very popular ones should be available to registered users only who have contributed atleast one bargain I think.

Won't work, somebody will repost it somewhere else.

Exactly. This is "Internet" we are talking about. If things are hidden behind registration walls sooner or later people will re-post them to other public forums.

There is already a Ozbargain VIP, you guys just don't know about it ;)

        http://www.ozbargain.com.au/VIP

won't work for non members (plebs)

        • +1

          That's nothing, a group of ordinary OzB'ers can cause a 500 (server error) on a target. :)

      • +2

the VIP is only for members above 3000 comments. Gold is for above 2000 comments.

You can do it scrimshaw, 65 more to go.

VIP…hang on is that better than Platinum I'm on now ?

I thought I was on the XXX membership, does VIP include the free private room features as well?

  • 'OZ bargain getting too popular for its own good'.

That only happens when we have the power to destroy COTD, Mwave and Allphones.

    • yep, when ozbers start calling the shots on specials. then we know we have the edge.

  • I might get negged but anyhow - based on what happened re the Amex Connect thing, locking it down to registered user and/or disallowing suspicious IP address (like Pinpoint LOL) might not be a bad idea. It makes them less likely to cotton on what we've figured out to our advantage like the Galaxy Tab from yesterday.

    • That's incredibly self-serving. As mentioned, if bargains aren't posted here, they'll be linked elsewhere. This isn't a 'us or them' competition, it's bargains for all. Maybe people should stop being so selfish.

      • Only registered users can post bargains anyway, current non-registered guests who cant be bothered contributing are the only ones affected imo - if they wont give then they wont get.

  • not sure why it must be private
have found this site useful for the common man - me.

  • for all members who actually read the forums
