White ITX SFX Power Supply (PSU) Choice and Questions

Hey guys,

I recently changed my GPU to RTX 3080 in my ITX build and so am considering a change in my PSU as well. Since the case is white and so I'm looking for a white PSU. However, the options are quite limited, especially for SFX PSU. Searching online the only two options that I am thinking of right now lead to:

1) Cooler Master V850 SFX Gold White Edition Full Modular, 850W, 80+ Gold Efficiency

2) Seasonic Focus SPX750 Platinum White Edition, 750W, 80+ Platinum Efficiency

Both prices are quite similar, and they are both big brands. I personally prefer Seasonic (well speaking of PSU Seasonic is fantastic + Platinum Efficiency) but then Cooler Master is 850W which would be a better deal for future upgrade. Here is my build at the moment:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X

Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix B550I Gaming AM4 ITX Motherboard

Memory: Corsair 32GB (2x16GB) CMH32GX4M2D3600C18W

SSD 1: Samsung 1TB 980 PRO

SSD 2: Samsung 970 EVO Plus 2TB

CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken Z63 280mm AIO Liquid CPU Cooler

GPU: ASUS ROG STRIX GEFORCE RTX 3080 OC WHITE EDITION V2, 10GB

PSU: Seasonic 650W Focus SGX 80+ Gold Power Supply

Case: SSUPD Meshlicious

My questions would be:

1) Which option in your opinion would be better if I'm considering a future upgrade? I heard that the next-gen GPU will be a power consumption beast.

2) The Cooler Master one I could only find in Amazon and is shipped from Amazon US. Does that mean it's a US standard? I haven't bought a PSU from overseas before. Would it be an issue to use in Australia (or generally a different country)?

    1. 850w will definitely be more future proof when upgrading.
    2. There aren't too many differences. The input voltage ranges from 90v to 264V so you don't have to worry about it. You just need a Female IEC-C13 Power Cable with an Aussie plug. However, note that claiming a warranty when needed can be tricky.
    • I dunno about that, I heard that RTX 4000 series is gonna double it's power requirements…

If you just got a RTX 3080 today, I wouldn't be buying a power supply based on what GFX you think you might get in a few years time…

      • The better question to ask is, what level of performance is OP expecting to have when they upgrade in the future? Do they need a high end cpu or flagship gpu for their setup? It might be a bit close but a 850W should still be enough to handle the flagship of next-gen gpus and cpus which be around 500w + 250w (Navi 31+Raptor lake) respectively along with remaining system power draw.

They'd also have to consider the amount of cooling required for future components and the type of workloads they're using. They'd be hard pressed to find an application that draws 100% peak power from cpu, gpu and every mobo component + enough cooling in an itx ff. An 850W would definitely offer benefits to futureproofing

  • The coolermaster did have an issue where the fan would ramp up very fast and noisy then back down but they have addressed that at least according to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uspZTfOCsqo this youtube video, no idea if they have released the revised model with the semi fanless mode removed so the fan doesn't ramp up.

750w is fine for my PC, im running a 5950x, Strix OC RTX 3090 in a custom loop no issues, though if i changed to intel 12900k for example i may have an issue as they are power hungry CPU's compared to AMD.

I'd say get the seasonic now and not worry about the future or having a noisy PSU fan.

    • Yeah the thing that I am mostly concerned about coolermaster is the fan and noise. I'm not into overclock so I guess 750w is sufficient. Currently using Seasonic and love the quietness.

  • Go 1000w if you actually want to futureproof, won't cost much more like $200 max

    • He wants a white PSU which doesn't exist in SFX form factor for 1000w

  • Seasonic is like the Gold standard. I would definitely choose that, I'm re building an itx nas and just got a corsair sfx750 myself.
