eufy Sync Security Flaw

Hi,

I recently bought a Eufy system with home base but while watching a new deal posted, I saw comments linking to a Eufy forum showing a known flaw where if you press the sync or take the camera out of reach of the system, all your footage is deleted.

This seems like too much of a flaw to me and it's been known for almost a year yet no fix.
I intend to send it back for a refund, what would you guys recommend that is similar in price and function (rechargeable battery)?
Are there any Taiwanese based manufacturers that make a similar setup?

Thanks,

Seems like a feature to me

  • Which Eufy system? Homebase 1 or Homebase 2?

My camera regularly goes out of range and footage stays (stored on the homebase unit). I use a spare camera as a baby monitor for my car when my son sometimes falls asleep in there after a trip. Camera stays in the car's glovebox and I just place it up when we return. When he wakes, I get a phone notification.

That spare camera is part of 5 others that are set up around the home.

  • I use it - never had that issue??

Here's the forum post for anyone interested about the sync button flaw.

As for taking the camera out of range, I heard that somewhere but I can't remember where. I don't know if that's 100 percent true; if thief takes a camera with them out of range, the footage will delete with it.

I was aware of this issue when I recently bought a eufy system and bought anyway. It's all about weighing up the likelihood of events.

Can I picture a burglar stopping off for a few minutes break before or after ransacking my house, take note of the model of camera I have, have the presence of mind and extra time available to remember some press-and-hold reset button trick that is specific to a particular manufacturer, remember to lug in a ladder (!) on the off chance it might be a eufy camera, set up said ladder, climb up in view of neighbours, remove the camera and/or wipe the system? No, I can't see that happening. And if they did - ah well, thats a risk I took with an inexpensive wireless camera system. For me it was worth the risk.

For the record I've had the system set up for a week and still testing it out but I'm blown away with the quality and setup so far. Very happy with the purchase.

(to confirm - i havent tested out this flaw either, for fear of stuffing up my setup or config or something, so i'm not 100% sure my system is exposed to it - but decided not to care regardless as per above)

Your thought processes were exactly the same as mine.
Thieves know cameras exist, they often hide their faces anyway, but may be identified by other features and think they have a false sense of security by hiding their face.
And even apart from that, the camera acts as a slight deterrent to casual theft (ie. parcels) and a source of info and observation of what goes on around my house. For example when Auspost say they came to your door :-)
For reference I've had mine over a year and found their battery claims to be very close to accurate (depending on how often it gets triggered).

And for that it performs very well at a price point and convenience factor that is hard to match.
Would still like them to fix the issue though.

I thought about that as well but Eufy's support has been pretty poor and in my case the cameras will be in a hands reach, so the chances of the camera just being taken are probably high.
So I am more thinking towards returning them for a refund.

Your line of questioning will eventually lead you to a proper commercial setup - wired PoE cameras mounted with security screws connected to a local NAS that is firewalled from allowing any outside connections except the monitoring package.

  • so is the data delete off the camera or the homebase?

    • The homebase unfortunately.

  • I encountered an issue where a contractor accidentally tripped our RCD and power went out. This took the home base 2 offline. Cameras operate on battery so I assumed the footage would transfer one power was restored. Nope! Footage from all cameras was gone. So now need to look into a UPS solution for this.

Essentially means that a crook could bypass all cameras and recording by simply switching off the power to the house. What a flaw!
