Where to Donate a Car Seat?

My daughter has outgrown her car seat & it seems a waste to throw it in the rubbish, especially since it hasn't gotten a lot of use (thanks covid)

I tried ringing up a few local charities but they don't want it either.
I live in an apartment so the tried and true curbside method isn't an option too. I'd hate to throw it away especially since it was like 300 bucks new.

  • Local community playgroup? Notice board at daycare?
Any organisation will be sketchy on taking it because they don’t know its history, so you really need to get in touch with somebody who wants it for themselves.
Maybe just Facebook marketplace or Gumtree.

Second hand child car safety products are generally frowned upon.

Some people can't afford it (yes, shouldn't have a baby if whoever can't afford it, but people do..) so it's better they have something than have nothing.

And it's fine if it's from someone you know and you know it hasn't been in a collision or sustained any potential damage.

    Friends/colleagues who might be expecting?

    Local Facebook buy swap sell.

Manufacturers and retailers love that people throw away perfectly safe and useable car seats.

Yeah that did spring to mind.
I'd imagine manufacturers did a lot of lobbying to make sure laws got put in place to stop them being reused.

Try St Kilda Mums - https://www.stkildamums.org/

    • Thanks for that.

That looks like a good option; clayton is a fair hike from me though but it'd still be worth it I think.

  • Just put it on FB market place and it will disappear in seconds lol

I have heard a few stories of entitled people on facebook when it comes to free stuff and how some people don't only want it for free, they also expect you to deliver it to them too! lol 🤣

want it for free, they also expect you to deliver it to them too

Been there. I was trying to give away some electrical equipment, still working well, on Marketplace, and the number of people who also wanted free delivery, some 50+km away was unbelievable.

Ended up putting it all on the nature strip and it vanished within 5 minutes.

        • +2

          Someone took the nature strips?

I seriously wonder what goes through these people's minds when they say that!

            @bobbified:

"ohh look it's free. I really want that. I'm too cooked to drive so I'll get them to deliver it"

      • Related: I was selling something recently and the buyer told me I needed to have change. Got uptight when I said (in advance of them showing up) that I didn't have change haha

I don't use FB so i'm not going to be able to post it there.

I might try gumtree as some people suggest. I don't want anything for it; i just don't want it to get wasted since it costs a fair bit of money and there'd have to be some people out there who would be glad to save that $.

You don't need to set a price on Gumtree, you can mark it as free on the ad page. Gumtree is completely free to use, go for it.

@ jlien Neither do I. I just joined FB to use Marketplace, not interested in all the other BS.

  • Someone here might be expecting and be able to put it to good use.
(of course, hoping that if someone does take it, they're not taking it for the sake of reselling for profit!)

  • Put it on facebook marketplace for as free

  • Some good ideas above.

I remember when I was a kid, my aunt worked for a organisation (not a charity) that helped recent refugees settle in. Plenty of families there who have young children and don't have the means to have car seats and are generally just getting by. We gave our (my seat), along with other recently replaced appliances to one of the new families and they were super appreciative.

This was like 20 years ago, and with all the rules re: second-hand seats, I don't know if this would still be allowed but maybe reach out to similar local organisations and see if they'd take it.

    • "for buying"
      .

    • I'm not looking to sell anything.
I just want to give it away to someone who'll get use out of it.

It has a sticker on it saying it was made in 2016; so we're not talking about something sitting in a shed for 30 years either.

Join your local Buy Nothing group on Facebook and give it away there

  • There is a charity in Melbourne's northern suburbs that is crying out for baby seats etc
The charity is set up to assist mothers who struggle to get basic needs for their kids etc

They can pick up or you can drop off

    its called
    BIG GROUP HUG

      Thanks for that :)

I've reached out to stkilda mum's (another group that was posted earlier in this thread) if i don't get a response i'll shoot a mail to big group hug.
