$700 Laptop - What Should I Aim for?

It's been a while since I have bought a laptop/notebook, to the point where buying an AMD chip was not even a consideration last time.

With the black friday specials about to go down I am wondering what I should be trying to get for around the $700 mark when it comes to a notebook? Mostly used for internet/word processing but a bit of image editing too, no gaming. 15" would be ideal.

I assume an i7 will not drop to that price so an i5 (version?) is probably what I am aiming for? And I have no idea about which Ryzen is good value?

Happy for any tips if I need to pull the trigger on a short-lived BF deal.

All honesty, you don't get much for $700.
But here is current deals https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/Laptop%20type%3Aozb…

Just visit jb hifi or good guys or somewhere and haggle a $900+ laptop for $700

    • you can bargain in jbhifi?

Lol of course you can. I got $5 off an iPad case the other day. Can't believe people pay sticker price.

    • I had spotted the Dell sale unfortunately it seems to sit either side - an Athlon for $500 and the next step up is $900. It might come to that though if nothing exists in that price point.

1135G7 will probably be the best you can get

If you existing laptop is slow save you money and get more memory (8G is a good amount for simple things) and put in an SSD (any SSD is better than a HDD) as these two things will speed it up until you have between $1000 and $1500 for a decent laptop.

    • No existing laptop unfortunately - new one needed for a family member and $700 is the budget as it will be mostly light use and they can't justify the extra at this stage.

  • If you are doing photo editing, you will want a decent screen, which you are unlikely to get in a new $700 laptop.

    • Yes not expecting the world for $700. More the RAM/processor to handle a bit of editing and not just staring at an hourglass all the time.

  • Do you need a laptop? Can a Chromebook suffice?

    • I also thought chromebooks were a bit underpowered? I had sort of ignored the genre as it adds even more complexity to the decision :S
