23andme or AncestryDNA, MyHeritage Geneology Test?

I was interested in my geneology recently as I've been told I'm 100% Han Chinese, but I suspect I have some traces of Indigenous Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese or Mongolian. Has anybody had experience getting tested and what were your results, were they what you were expecting?

Comparing the prices DNA Tests as I thought it would be nice for me/my family as gifts for Black Friday. Some are running Pre Black Friday Sales and I expect prices will come down soon.

Save yourself the trouble here is the free OzBargainDNA test.

    • You are at some risk of cancer.
    • Your background is basically the whole world.
    • For an extra $25 you can have a certificate to say you are from some special country.

    • Unlike other providers OzBargain does not save your DNA or share it with the cops.

You forgot middle aged Asian Male who works in IT

      • +1

Sorry our free test doesn't cover what job you work in at the moment.
However your body contains micro-plastics and PFAS.

Great, now I have to declare on life insurance I am at risk of cancer! Thanks a million deme.

      • I think DNA tests aren't allowed to give Health data for this reason

        • +2

I haven’t kept up with the latest, but they used to report things like BCRA gene which indicated susceptibility to a type of breast cancer.
If you get that info, and don’t disclose it to your life insurer (like in your super fund) they can refuse to pay out if you later get that illness. I was curious about my ancestry, but not enough to open a potential can of worms.

          • @mskeggs: That's really interesting stuff regarding the life insurance. It reminds me of when HealthEngine, the GP booking service got caught out selling personal information to 3rd parties. Imagine if they had access to medical information (they didn't) and sold that onto 3rd parties. Life insurance companies would love it and you'd lose so much coverage.

      • +1

Sorry mskeggs this was a special "everyone welcome"* sale.

If you wish to get your own OzBargain DNA test, it'll be $500 in transferable to rektrading.

        * Limit 1 per Earth.

  • how many generations can they tell ?

    • I saw some people had 0.3% which was 500 years ago

You are able to find 9th cousins in the databases

  • 100% Han Chinese, but I suspect I have some traces of Indigenous Chinese

Wouldn’t Han Chinese also be Indigenous to China?

    • Yes I mean like Dai, Hmong etc which are Indigenous subgroups

My family have had the same land for 200 years and there's a heap of old documents with family history dating back even further. Fair to say for one half of the family I don't need a DNA kit to know the ancestry. Most recent family tree was scary as people I went to school with were infact related long distance.

The other half is more of a mystery though. Certainly some Japanese in the mix.

    • Interesting mate re long documented history. From what I've seen of you at previous OZB birthday lunches at Chatswood, you're not a ranger and that last sentence makes sense but could be confirmation bias.

Yep, let companies own your DNA and allow law enforcement access to the databases. No thanks.

    • And sell it I bet.

Or clone OP, take over his account under Federal laws and post car insurance posts.

    • This is not genetic testing that they are talking about.

    • Private health insurance is not based on a risk assessment of your health.
      - You will not be asked about genetic test results or your family history of health conditions.

But life and disability insurance is.

        • +1

But life and disability insurance is.

Which you might not have directly, but if you have superannuation (which is pretty much everyone), you probably do have a life/tpd policy through the superannuation company.

Good way to find the skeletons in the closet. Turns out grandma knew the milkman quite well.

    • Haha, one thing they stress is if the results don't match up it could be due to genes not being evenly passed down from both parents or adultery

This is ozbargain, why did you even bother with this rich white people charade?

Who cares about who your ancestors are, just be the best you can be

    • More of a curiosity standpoint as my ancestors had a Vietnamese/Chinese surname but parents insist I am 100% Chinese

    • +1

I am so triggered. There are so many shades of white!

I'll provide you with some useful info. Feel free to pay me half of what you've been quoted or whatever you feel like paying for my service.

You've been told you're 100% Han - so your ancestors lived in the former Mongol empire. I assume you're a bloke (Ozbargainer and related stuff). Well there's an 8% chance that Genghis Khan was your ancestor.

    You're welcome.

    • I think it was already 0.5 percent of the male population in the world, or roughly 16 million descendants living today are descended from Khan. If you divide by the amount of South East Asians its 8% its simple math.

      • its simple math

        … after I informed you.

        • I already knew this before you informed me
I've seen Marco Polo on Netflix
Did you know Genghis also invented Hot Pot?
Cooking meat in upturned helmets on the fire for horse soldiers on the march.

Same reason I don't buy any IOT crap, I don't want companies to sell me to other companies.

    • Haha I was against it too, but a doctor friend told me the real price is 15k and they are subsiding the cost by selling it as part of a database.

      • +1

I own shares in 23andMe and the costs involved in testing are heavily subsidised by selling access to their database, but it is nowhere near $15000 per test these days.

The company always planned on developing their own drugs using the data too.

        https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2021-11-04/23andme-t…

        • Nice they are publically listed! Is the price reported anywhere public?

      • +1

A covid PCR test is about $75 in bulk for a state government, including somebody to swab you, so the lab component must be a fraction of that. The genome test is a bit more complex, I suppose, as presumably they are looking for dozens of markers, but $15k seems at least 2 orders of magnitude too dear. Maybe in 1995 when everything was done one at a time by hand it was $15k, but your sample will just be one in a batch of 500 being fed into the machine.

        • The main thing is the database they compare you to, even if you fork out $5000 you still need to be put into a database

          • @[Deactivated]: By order of magnitude me means a 0. At least 2 orders of magnitude is at least two 0's.

  • I looked into this briefly a while back (also of East/SE Asian descent), and my research showed that 23andme were the best at giving ancestral information for East/SE Asians - there was also a SAT post on it too.

  • We do not share with third parties your name or other common identifying information linked to your genetic data, except as legally required

So your information is not safely stored away for your eyes only because it is accessible by the police/government.

  • +4

Do it for free. Just tell everyone that you have won the lottery and all your relatives will magically appear.

    • Haha thats funny

  • I just bought the two kits from AncestryDna. I guest the results will be 100% asian. To avoid that, you can upload the data to Wegene which is a Chinese company that might got more detials. BTW: I am not worry about someone weaponized my DNA or whatever as long as they do not check my browsing history.
