Am travelling to Cairns and Airlie Beach with a family, anyone know any fun things to do that won't break the bank?

I am travelling to Airlie Beach and Cairns with my family and would like to know some cheap things for us to do, would like to go on Skyway and Kuranda Railway in Cairns but it costs $250 for a family to go up on one and back on the other. Any ideas?

  • I just moved from Airlie Beach to Cairns. Not a lot to do in Airlie, as it is really only a small rural town. There's a great (very, very large) public pool on the esplanade of Airlie Beach.

In Cairns, Crystal Cascades is a fantastic spot to go if you have access to a car. Nice walk and great for swimming. Stay clear of Lake Placid, it's a wreck nowadays.

    Hope this helps.

  • There are cheap local public bus services to Kuranda from Cairns. Just ask at the Cairns bus interchange. Also the Airlie and Cairns yacht clubs usually have free sailing about one afternoon a week. Call them to find out more.

  • MMMMM,that,s a bit of a hard one.Airlie,as steveau said,is a small rural place, and is more known for being a backpackers haunt and "layover" place for those travelling around Oz.I can recommend hiring a car (can be done REALLY CHEAPLY up there ),and just driving……a lot of gorgeous sightseeing everywhere. Also,GO START A CONVERSATION WITH A BACKPACKER and A LOCAL,see what tips they have.A backpacker is on REALLY limited funds, and can tell you all sorts of places to go / things to do for almost nothing. And a local……well, they LIVE there, have families to entertain, and also a budget,so who better to get tips from (they also know the "stuff only a local knows ",and can give you priceless info ).Splurge at least once though on a trip to Whitehaven with the purple catamaran ("Tingara "if i remember correctly )…..a day to remember forever, and a day to "Reefworld" (although i will admit, this will make your eyes water at the cost.It may be a little cheaper now,but still,be warned ).Have fun.
