Bucket Hat for Children: $31.50 for Email Subscribers (Normally $35) & Free Postage @ Moon Monkey

80

Hi friends!

Long time lurker (my sad bank balance proves it), occasional poster and proud husband here. Hope you're all well :-)

My wife has just launched her new kids' fashion brand - Moon Monkey. The brand is focused on quirky kids' fashion that is functional, but also empowers children to be themselves on adventures. My wife is an industrial designer with 15+ years experience, and our little man is the inspiration behind the brand.

The first item to be launched under this brand is the bucket hat, just in time for Summer! These are bright, colourful sun hats for kids who dare to be different.

The RRP is $35, but email subscribers can receive 10% off their first purchase. PLUS, postage will be free Australia-wide up until Christmas.

Features of the bucket hats (from the website):

  • 5 bold, colourful designs
  • Fully reversible (bold print on one side, and solid colour on the reverse)
  • Water resistant fabric
  • UPF 50+ sun protection
  • 100% polyester fabric
  • Wide outside brim
  • Available in 2 sizes (2-6 years old, 6-10 years old)
  • Designed by a Melbourne mamma :-)

Thanks for reading!

  • They look great.

$31.50 is beyond my budget though for a cap that my kid will probably lose.

    • Thanks for the kind feedback! :-)

Haha I feel you! These have pretty handy cords to tie under the chin - but I know how resourceful kids can be in defying these sorts of things.

We lost a pair of sunnies at the beach the other day (when Melbourne was getting some Spring weather, sigh) - and had to re-order the item, as the little man was quite upset. Grrrr.

      Thanks again, friend.

  • Our sun hats are safely tested to the highest level, responsibly made and produced ethically.

I would like to know more about these two claims.

Absolutely! Mrs Moon Monkey is just coming back from a client meeting, I'll see what she can provide when she gets back. From our discussions, I recall that the manufacturer in China is extremely well established, responsible for a number of reputable brands, and they're proud of their working conditions and output. Anyway, I'll see what we can provide shortly :-)

OK, here's some info from Mrs Moon Monkey:

The fabric for the hats is UPF and waterproof tested - in line with the other brands who use their materials. An SGS report is currently being prepared for our records. The brim width is compliant with Australian Standards (i.e. 5mm for up to 8yo and 6mm for up to 12yo - link below). The material is 100% polyester and my wife is currently enquiring about using recycled materials in the very near future.

The manufacturer based in Nanjing, China was founded in 1999. Approx. 35 staff. During the development and manufacturing process (which my wife, as a proud designer, was heavily involved in), they sent numerous photos, and the working conditions look great (clean, spacious, professional and safe).

They specialise in the export of high quality apparel products, with some customers being Woolies, Big W, K Mart, Sears, Michael Kors. They have passed the 'Human Rights and Technology Factory Inspection Requirements'.

Also, your good questions have prompted us to share a little more on the website, so my wife will include some of this info, as well as some of the photos we received during the process :-)

      • This is the type of openness and feedback that you rarely get, if ever, from manufacturers so well done. 👍

My wife is checking out the website now. Good designs. She thinks the tie up strap isn’t such a good feature and the fact they’re made from polyester. Our kids chew on the strap a fair bit. I reckon the recycled polyester idea sounds cool, there’s definitely a hunger for recycled material goods.

I see a comment about price, I think they’re ok priced. Given you’re including postage and starting out, it’s reasonable.

All the best, love seeing new small businesses giving it a crack.

        • Thanks for your kind words and constructive feedback, very helpful! That's interesting re the straps/polyester, I'll take that back to the boss, but yeah absolutely recycled materials are not far off at all. My wife's vision for the brand is unique, but we know it has to start somewhere, and keeping in touch/being transparent with our community is key. Thanks for the wishes 🙂

All the best to you and your wife - my partner has just started her own little baby inspired side hustle as well. Hopefully we can both now retire as trophy husbands.

    • Thanks, mate - haha that's the dream!! All the best to you and your partner as well :-)

Honestly, my view is that this is expensive.
But, I realise that some parents will pay that much for a child's hat even though there are likely to be cheaper items in the market (maybe with a different print or whatever).

I totally get this, and know as a parent that sometimes you just need the basics for things - otherwise we go broke very quickly haha. My wife has a vision for a trendy, slightly higher-end (but definitely comparable with the prices of other similar items from small and big brands alike) product range. This means she'll miss out on those looking for Target/K Mart options (which we also do from time to time), but that's ok as Moon Monkey is looking to provide a longer-lasting item with lots of features.

Really appreciate your honest feedback :-)
