Battery for (Dumb) Watches

Happy Hump Day!

I have several traditional watches not being used and battery has been flat for a while.
Not getting "Smart" Watch but have been using my other watches and mobile for time.

Just looking at putting batteries back to them all because some are quite nice dress-watch.

This got me thinking: in the past I have different experience with batteries: some last a long time and some dont.
Can someone share their knowledge and expertise in this field:
What do I look for when getting a new battery? I can go to a specialty shop but it'd be good if I know what to look for.

I'm based in Brisbane if anyone has a good place to recommend.

Thanking you!

just take it to a shop and get them to do it … i tried to fix a couple for an ex gf and they're fiddly and annoying … for 15$ when the battery will cost you 5$, it's not worth the hassle … try to get energiser or duracell … descent brand

Just ask professional to do it for you, sometimes it's important to seal it properly and tested for water resistance if required and they usually have the correct tools to open it.

I get my batteries from an eBay seller, from $1.99 for 5 batteries including postage.

They last just as long as real store bought ones.

A jeweller once told me, if you intend not to use a watch for a long period, pull the crown out.

This will limit the amount of power the watch uses, and the battery should last a lot longer.

    • Dunno if true, but have heard this too….

I just wear them as accessory. They are sometimes showing the correct time (daylight saving) and some are out of battery. No one asks for time anymore when you are out and about these days.

    • Think positive! Even a stopped watch is correct twice a day!

If they're not water-resistant/ waterproof, DIY using decent brand name batteries with long expiry bought from eBay.
Water-resistant/ waterproof watches are better left to the expert as it's important to make sure they are re-sealed properly.

Just make it nice and tight. I've changed waterproof torches myself for many years and have no issues with waterproof-ness.

I buy 10 packs of panasonic batteries off ebay. Change them myself. It works out at about 50c/watch depending on the battery

    • Except that every single one of my watches seem to want a different size of battery.

      • Mine too but I've found there are 2 basic batteries that seem to fit all of them. I can't remember the numbers and they are down in my workshop.

I've got a Seiko 5. No battery changes since it's automatic.

  • Thank you all for generously sharing our thoughts.
Looks like the jewel store is the way to go for my dress watches.
Might get eBay for the fancy ones.
    Cheers,
