Wiper Motor (Windshield Wiper) Issue

Hi,

Does anyone have experience with wiper motor?

I changed the wiper motor and it was working perfectly fine, 2 days later it stopped working again. I noticed the wiper blades weren't sitting correctly when operating i.e. they would not come down completely to the starting point.

Is it possible it is an issue with the linkages/wiper arms? A voltage test indicates the wiper motor is getting sufficient power and no fuse is blown.

Thanks

Your local car mechanic probably does.

Do you have nothing better to do than be narcissistic on OzBargain all day? Your comments generally but not always repugnant and offer little help to the community, If you bothered to read past the first question you'd see i'd already replaced the motor and am now scouting ideas from others who may be familiar with this issue i.e. the purpose of a forum.

jv offered his advice OP. Why so salty?
P.S. this is a car insurance forum, not a car windscreen wiper forum.

You must be having a bad day or you don't have a good local mechanic. Or are you like this all the time?

My local mechanic is fantastic with advice, and doesn't charge for it. That's why I stick with him for all the work I can't do…

  • Depending on age of vehicle it could be worn rose joints or pivot on the linkages.

they would not come down completely to the starting point.

    What car?

Is there a reset procedure for the wipers to get them to the park position? Could be electric or physical depending on the car.

Or, they were not in the correct position when you put the linkages back together.

Did you use a new, or used, wiper motor? Can you hear the motor working when the wipers are on?

Does the motor work if you jump it with some decent sized wires? What were the symptoms that caused you to release it? How old is the vehicle?

Could be that there is voltage, but the switch or wiring has a fault that causes increased resistance with increased current. Ie low power is fine, high power just can’t get through. It’s possible you disturbed the wiring just enough for it to work for 2 days then fail again.

    • Yeh actually the motor works if I hit it with a soft hammer, occasionally it works if I help it move.

      • Did you get a new one or wrecker part? Either way I’d recommend whipping out and taking it back.

Can you check if the wipers move properly?

        • Wreck tried getting new but no one makes them anymore. The wipers seem to move fine when they did work

          • @[Deactivated]: Can you check the wiper Scion without the motor on? Otherwise it appears the ‘new’ motor may be suffering the same as the OG one.

            • @Euphemistic: I'll take a look, do you know anyone who rebuilds these things?

  • A voltage test indicates the wiper motor is getting sufficient power and no fuse is blown.

    What qualifies as 'sufficient' power?

  • Body control module is burnt out and requires replacement because wiper control module is burnt out and needs replacing because washer motor ecu is burnt out and needs replacing because instrument cluster control unit is burnt out and needs replacing…

Or, you could always take it to an auto electrician/local mechanic and get them to look at it for you.

  • Would be helpful if the model of car stated.

Yes I've had sticky wiper motor before, it won't return to normal position due to grease on the contact points on the positioner assembly. Need to disassemble and clean the grease off.
