Good Dishwasher for a Family of Four?

Family of four plus occasional gatherings of 10 people.

I think I've managed to convince my Asian parents that dishwashing is better then hand washing.

With Black Friday coming and other shopping events, I am looking for recommendations on a good dishwasher. Is one costing around 1k suffice to meet the needs?

Good ratings for energy and water, reliable that you would have to confidence it would not break down.

I am seeing good reviews for the brand Bosch.

EDIT: An Asian-friendly Dishwasher would be preferred. Been seeing many people complain that there are no positions for chopsticks and big bowls and they have to fit awkwardly in, wasting a lot of space.

Also any advice if you use bowls, big bowls instead of dishes? We rarely use dishes.

Happy with my Bosch. Many trouble free years.
Certainly a step-up from Electrolux brands.

    • Yeah Bosch… its quick and it's quiet

    • Make sure its series 6. German made. The rest are Turkish and plastic.

      • hey, are the series 6 really old models? I don't see an upgraded version of the series 6 on retailers sites

    • What's wrong with my Electrolux?????

I used to own a Miele dishwasher and that was awesome. Yes, they are pricey, but I never had any issues with it. It cleaned well, but the best part was that it operated silently. Literally, sometimes I'd wonder if it was even operating.

The best dishwasher I ever owned was a Miele. Currently using a SIemens but it doesn't match the Miele.

I agree our Miele is great although it was pretty expensive.

How much space do they have to fit it in?

    • This. Do you have an existing cavity with both water and power?

      • I'll just opt for a freestanding one.

        • +1

Just my opinion, but that looks really ugly in a kitchen and you still need water and power.

          • @MS Paint: It's ok. I think it'll look ok because it'll stand next to the marble kitchen table and the rice cooker can sit on top. Water and power source is not a concern.

    • better check that the stuff your parents own are dishwasher safe
    • depends on how greasy or dirty the plates and bowls are.. may need some pre-rinsing.
regional cuisines may act differently in a dishwasher..(e.g baked lasagna dish in a dishwasher not likely to clean very well.)
    • get one with cutlery tray. for chopsticks and utensils. lie down is better than standing up.
    • get one with adjustable heights in the baskets
    • watch you tube videos on how to stack the dish washer properly for the most effective clean.

sometimes, i have to sacrifice dishwasher real estate for certain things…
e.g hand rinse non oily and less soiled items to save room for a pot or pan or large dishes.
you learn over time what will work and what won't

I had two dishwashers in my house growing up, my brother and I.

  • Can confirm our Bosch works great, is fairly silent, and used most days of the week for aftermath of seAsian cuisine, ie, chopsticks, bowls, etc.

  • Make sure it's easy to clean. Our sprinklers inside was easily clogged with tiny egg shells, greens, etc and was difficult to take out debris as the sprinklers was welded together and had a poor filter that came with it.

We had to half hand wash them before putting in dishwasher.

    Aldi dishwasher here.

You should rinse food scraps off anyway. They are dishwashers not rubbish bins.

      • We're talking 1mm × 1mm eggshells that are sometimes not easy to see/rinse off

        • +1

Eggshells and rice are two things your dishwasher will hate the most.

@MS Paint: Oh god…any Asians here? How are you efficiently using your dishwashers?

            • +1

@PeeDee: Why do you have to be Asian to efficiently use a dishwasher?

              • @MS Paint: Sorry wrong word..I meant effectively. Cause our cutlery is different, I am wondering how we can best use the dishwasher because it's designed for dishes and we use big bowls, so I'm not sure if it's efficient for our fam let alone other cultures that primarily use big bowls.

                • +2

@PeeDee: Not Asian (hubby is) but I’m more the one who goes for big bowls (for noodle soups etc). He prefers for us to use plates as they stack more efficiently. Can confirm that the Bosch layout is much better for plates than big bowls, but I think they’re all like this. We went for one with a cutlery basket (rather than tray) to get more height, but a cutlery tray would be better for chopsticks, I just end up laying chopsticks in the top drawer. Take some bowls and chopsticks that you regularly use with you to a shop and see how they stack, we did and the people in the shop were used to it, apparently it’s a common thing to do.

                  • @morse: great idea!! thank you!

Makes me wonder about the dishwashers in Asian countries. It practically loses the purpose of using a dishwasher efficiently due to less space, thus prob handwashing wins. I'm really tired of convincing for dishwashers and I'm too tired to convince for bowls to plates. The cultural aspect is gone. But yes! great idea on bringing it to the store!! I'm still curious.

    How did you do so?

    • Could you relate as well?

If you have to pre-rinse before using the dishwasher, either you are leaving too much on your plate (eg not subscribing to the clean plate philosophy) OR your dishwasher isn't good enough. We definitely don't bother pre rinsing with a series 6 bosch.

    • Also have series 6 Bosch and don’t prerinse.

      • Same here - series 6 Bosch. No pre-rinsing. It is quiet and well built. We use Fairy Platinum Plus tablets and our dishes come out sparkling clean every time. We have tried many different tablets and these were the ones with the best result. Whilst any of the liquid tablets from Fairy or Finish worked well, we found the dry/powder tablets from Finish to not work as well. Contents came out dull and with powder still on them (and this was not from overloading/poor stacking).

        • hey, are the series 6 really old models? I don't see an upgraded version of the series 6 on retailers sites

  • We have an LG that's has been going strong for the best part of a decade. It's super quiet and does a great job. No prerinsing needed.

Bought a similar model to this over 6 years ago still going strong.

  • Bosch Series 6… has to be German made. The cheaper ones are Turkish.

Bosch user here. Happy so far and it's pretty quiet when running. Washes well and comes out dry except for plastics on the upper basket.

Highly recommend you get a model with a top cutlery tray. It'll still come with that annoying cutlery basket that sits on the bottom tray but I've never needed it.

Cutlery comes out so much cleaner and it's so easy to load and unload from the top tray. Plus, I can fit 5 more plates in the main tray without that annoying basket

I have one of these: https://www.binglee.com.au/products/omega-odw101w-55cm-compa…
I love it, works very well.
Can be installed inside a large under sink cabinet, if you have the space; otherwise, it can drain into the sink and use a tap diverter as inlet.
