knowing how my google powered GPS works on my smartphone, I would only get a dedicated GPS if the maps updated for free

  Even better, download NavFree from the Android Market (not going to call it the play thing). Free navigation that seems to be almost as good as most of the hardware versions.
  
  The downside, it seems to need a data connection to search for addresses, and I couldn't work out a way to navigate to a point on the map (like I can in my Tomtom).

Portable GPS for $88.. and it's a GARMIN!!! It's reliable, has great mapping and it's easy to use. What's not to like?

Sure you can get GPS apps these days on your smart phones but for Mum, Dad, Grandpa and Grandma this is the unit they'll want. Plug it in tell it where to go and drive. The maps are current and by the time they go out of date you'll have made use of the $88 it owes you. Plus you then buy the next model on special :)
