  • Horrible Horrible Horrible piece of software..

I'd deliberately install some versions of known spyware before installing a Norton package!
In my experience the only thing Norton software does successfully is make your system annoying (with pop ups), unstable and slow.

Norton Anti-Virus might be an exception, but why pay for AV software when the free options are pretty decent and common sense (and avoidance of Microsoft's Internet products) protects you from the rest?

  • It gets a vote from me, because it is a bargain. That said, Norton is indeed a horrible piece of software! Just read the googles.

    • a wise seer posited that "a bargain is not a bargain, unless it's something you need"

I would add in this case "Norton is as desirable as a hole in the head"
thus … the above does not qualify as a bargain in my book.

  • Best AV software for free are AVG & Avira, both catches more virus quicker than Norton

  • Can anyone provide a Symantec URL confirming that the cashback deal exists? I can't find anything.

  • the link on officeworks site

    • Were you replying to my question? If so - what link? I can't see any link to a symantec website confirming the cashback. (I'm being pedantic because officeworks have made mistakes like this many times before).

  • without any question — you are better off with a computer full of genuine virii, spyware and trojans than with any Norton software.

the reason Norton gives their antivirus tools away for free with almost every computer motherboard or video card sold is simply that only a damnable fool would pay anything for it — in this case they are paying YOU 5 cents for your effort, and the software is free, but this suite comes to you direct from Beelzebub's sphincter-stretcher, and it comes with a 100% guarantee to f*ck your computer up within months of installation.

    1. if there's a painful newb in your life that you can't stand, you could install it on their PC for kicks, but otherwise stay away — far, far, away!

    2. if you want to experiment and have an unused PC, you could try this garbage out, then use it awhile, uninstall it and run one of the multitude of better programs on the market — you are bound to find hundreds of virus infections and malware that Norton leaves behind.

    3. if however, you want decent anti-virus tools look no further than Kaspersky, NOD32, or Avira; for anti-malware try SpywareBlaster, SpybotS&D, or PrevX; for system utilities try CCleaner and JKDefrag (all of which can be found as free versions on www.download.com).

  • norton software, generally this "cure" is worse than the disease.

  • The bonus is free points if you want it and maybe a chance to make a bit more if you sell it for cheap, after the promotion is over, on eBay.

The cost is the time involved in getting the software, filling out a cashback, and the interest lost on payments for the software while you wait for your cash back to arrive. Oh, also the time going over the fine print on the cash back.

_You don't have to install the software to get the benefit _

I remember the old days, when Norton's stuff was very useful (thinking of Windows 98).

    • The only Norton that was good in the good ol' days were Norton Commander and Norton Utilities on DOS, when Peter Norton were still in charge! Wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole these days.

      • Wasn't he in charge for the '98 version of Windows?

        • No. Here's his Wikipedia entry. He has also authored many Windows related books but I don't think he has anything to do with Windows 98…

          • @scotty: Oops :P

I meant the version of Norton Utilities for Windows '98 :P My error

  • Gosh - I just helped a friend got rid of this "antivirus suite". This suite make the latest dual core machine crawling like a dog and keep popping up with subscription expire things (came pre-installed).

Even if it's free, it's not worth it. wait, even if they PAY you to install this, it's not worth it.
