Has anyone been able to get a VIN for an old trailer in NSW recently? If so, how did you go about it?
I'm looking at buying an old tinny but the trailer is unregistered and doesn't have a VIN. There is no proof of prior registration. The guy lived regional near a boat ramp and just took his chances running it down and back. I don't want to run the risk though.
I was talking to a mechanic and it seems if a second hand trailer doesn't have a VIN it is almost impossible to get a VIN for it, to be able to get a blue slip, to them register it.
Does anyone have any good advice on how I might get a VIN, what markings might need to be on the chassis to prove age or meet the criteria to get a VIN issued?
Thanks

Do trailers have VINs now? TIL
You can build a trailer from scratch and get it registered, so you should be able to register an trailer that hasn’t had rego before. For a new trailer I believe they provide an ID number on first rego and it needs to be attached to the trailer according to specs.
Thanks for your reply. With a new home made trailer you have to show receipts for the materials to prove its origin in order to get a VIN.
I think the intention is to prevent rebirthing of stolen trailers second handInteresting. Too bad if you build it out of left over steel and bits from around the farm.
Did you get a receipt from the original owner? Could you ask for one?
Is there a way of providing a stat dec or similar stating it belongs to you?
Just register it as home made.
That's what I did when I moved from Vic back to NSW and had a motorcycle trailer. Just got it blue slipped as a homemade and they gave me a VIN.
Before you register as home made make sure it isn't a branded one with the vin filed off.
Yeah, I've checked all over the drawbar and there's no grind/file marks
In Vic I have seen 'home made' or similar instead of a VIN on old trailer registration.
Pretty sure all boat trailers need a VIN or chassis number though.
Not sure if this is the same in NSW.
