Laptop i7 + Backlit Keyboard < $1000

I'm looking for a laptop with a (2nd gen) i7, dedicated graphics and a backlit keyboard for under $1000 delivered.

Other things:

  • preferably light
  • ssd optional (can upgrade later)
  • optical drive not required, rather not have one
  • backlit keyboard can be installed after market, I have no problems doing it myself

currently I have only found this one

http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/n53sv-sx787v-asus-n53sv-…

which would require me to install keyboard myself.

Any suggestions?

The one you've found is a bit on the heavy side isn't it? 2.9kg? If you're looking at 2.9kg then go for the Lenovo Y570 it's 2.7kg and has a better GPU GT555M and a bigger HDD but then you're going to replace it with a SSD anyway. When I got mine from Centre Com it was $910.16 delivered.
They don't have anymore stock but there are these places that have it cheaper than what I paid for it.

    • Yeah I know about the weight :(

I saw that (y570) in centrecom too ($849 currently, not on the website) but no backlit keyboard options, seems like a good(better) deal though

but backlit keyboard is required, low weight is preferred :)

Also I will probably change the optical drive for a second hdd bay

    • Also, the GT555m is not that different the GT540M, bear in mind that the one in this laptop (y570) is built on the GF108 design

about 90mhz higher clock speed but 99% the same on everything else

  • suggestion: why not use a usb led lamp instead of backlit keyboard?

I too wanted a backlit keyboard, but settled for a Samsung RF711. Considering the specs/the freebies thrown in/ price I paid; I totally forgot about the backlit keyboard lol! I use a cheap usb led lamp with it now, and it does the job nicely.

I know you're after backlit etc, but have you seen the specs on said laptop? It's awesome & runs great too. But it is on the large & heavy size

There are others I know of; I recently got laptops with similar specs/budget for family members.

-If you want, let me know exactly what specs you are after and I'll see what I can find.. It might take me a couple of days tho as I've the flu atm.

PS: Stay away from Acer..Lenovo aren't that grand either..Dell are uber overpriced.. My sisters Toshiba EXPLODED AND CAUGHT FIRE..in my FACE..LITERALLY!! And it wasn't even a year old..
And whatever you do, do not, I repeat DO NOT buy from Penta, they bait & hook and are v.v dodgy [personal experience as well as the general consensus - search whirlpool forums for penta details]. HTH :)

There was a time i really wanted a back lit keyboard, but then i realised it would never come in handy because most people can touch type well enough. Around 2 years ago when i was buying my current laptop, backlit keyboards added at least $100 to the price and usually high end models were more likely to offer it.

I decided to get an IBM Leonovo Thinkpad they have a light near the webcam you can turn on and off as you please. I'm not sure which models have it. It does the job just fine but i rarely ever use it. As for the person that said stay away from lenovo thats not true they are great computers. Theres a reason they've kept the same look and feel about them for years - because they work and stand the test of time! I wish i would've known that 10 years ago when i bought my first laptop.

    • my laptop has backlit but i never use it at all. for me, i type without looking at the keyboard. so even in the dark, i dont have to look while i type. and honestly, if you cant see the keyboard letters it would be pretty dark and it would really spoil your eyes if you use your laptop in such conditions.
