As usual there's an excellent review by Techtablets and a gaming/emulation review by ETA Prime. The iPlay 40H is identical to the iPlay 40 Pro, except that it has 128GB storage instead of 256GB. Easily one of the best budget brand tablets you can get.

Features include Android 11 (Stock/Google Play), 10.4" 2K IPS display, 8GB RAM, 128GB storage (expandable via MicroSD), Dual SIM, 4G with B28, 6200mAh battery providing 8+ hours of usage, WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, quad speakers and powered by the Unisoc Tiger T618 Octa-core CPU.

I did a search for custom roms for this tablet, but couldn't find any. Is there a popular budget tablet that has a good custom rom development community?

    • What do you want to use the table for that requires a custom rom?

      • -4

maybe he wants to use paid apps for free…

        • +9

No… He probably just wants his $300 tablet that's already behind the times with android 11, to be still updatable to 12 and beyond… These $300 no name tablets with no support from either the manufacturer or ROM development community are a false economy in my opinion.

          But each to their own.

          • @Binchicken22: I put cfw on my samsung galaxy tab s and it looks brand new, it's more efficient, and I can use paid apps for freeeeee.

            • +1

@9hundred: Yeah… But you can do the paid apps for free thing on any android device, stock ROM or not. You don't need a custom ROM for it.

              • @Binchicken22: Well, usually, but some apps require rooting if you wanted to, uh, make a backup of them and run it without the permission of the developer. Or so I've heard and you shouldn't do it.

                • @Diji1: Yep… Know all about it mate, am an ozbargain 7-11 hack user 😅

        • Yeah… You don't need a custom rom to sideload apks

      • +1

brad1601 nailed it. I don't want a $300 tablet with no software updates for the foreseeable future.

        • -1

High end Android tablets frequently have no updates either… but Samsung erm… some manufacturers, keep making/selling them.

          • @[Deactivated]: That's just not true.

Samsung tablets have always had at least 2 major Android version updates and then usually further security updates.

The current "guarantee" from them is 3 major version updates and at least a further year of security updates.

          • @[Deactivated]: Umm Samsung gives 3 years of updates?

            • @krisspy: Oh ok - I was reading old posts in Android tech forums the other day and saw people complaining several times that they got one, or no, updates.

Three is better I guess but still half an effort in my book given the initial cost, how fast new Android versions appear, and plenty of us take care of and use our devices for years. (Particularly when manufacturers do dumb things with new models like removing headphone jacks.)

You can install lineageos gsi as it is a project treble tablet. Someone already tried this in the original iplay40.

Both twrp and instruction in this thread.

      https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/alldocube-iplay-40-review…

I think that twrp and steps along with lineageos18.1 gsi can be tried on this one.

Device quality is superb if you are not spoiled by the OLED or all aluminium+glass constructon style of more recent devices.

The original Lenovo P11 is on AliExpress for about $270 delivered and seems pretty similar apart from the big bonus of Widevine L1 support.

P11 only has 4GB RAM versus 8GB on the Alldocube which is a big difference, but for Netflix/Disney/YouTube use it should be ok. Also not sure how the Snapdragon 660 compares to the T618.

I’m super keen to buy a cheap Chinese tablet but the widevine thing always kills it for me.

Edit: actually Clear’s coupon works on the P11 too, so you can get the 6GB/128GB version for $275.

UNISOC T618 does beat the Snapdragon 662 and it's certainly much cheaper than getting it from JB Hi-Fi.

Chinese tablets next year will be having Widevine L1 but there's a few issues already. The Chuwi HiPad Pro shipped with SD662 and had Widevine L1 no problem but with the CPU discontinued they're now getting a MediaTek. Fingers crossed the Widevine remains.

Chuwi HiPad Air is getting Widevine L1 via OTA but there's an issue with UNISOC preventing it from actually playing HD, so hopefully UNISOC release a fix. Then Blackview have one coming out soon similar.

      • Yes. UNISOC, the sleeping monster suddenly woke up and started decimating the premium SOC taboo. If someone can also make a new OrangePI with some custom Unisoc soc that will be epic.

Retroid pocket 2+ with Unisoc Tiger T310 is going to rule the Retro handheld universe. Can chew Gamecube and psp for breakfast.
        https://www.goretroid.com/collections/frontpage/products/ret….

Diversity in SoC market is the need of the day in the current climate anyway as long as code is mainlined.

        • +1

Android 9 unfortunately. T310 is much lower than T618 and T610 though it would be a lot better on the battery. It's good to see they're using Powervr for graphics as many use the ARM Mali G52 and that's inferior.

Like in the Powkiddy X18S. This has a better CPU and more RAM though.

          https://a.aliexpress.com/_mtb16dk

          • @Clear: Yes. X18s is "iplay40 DS" :) but may not be liked by most looking for a compact retro console. Also costlier than Retroid pocket2+ by a lot.

Retroid pocket2+ hits several sweet spots I think.

Taki Udon who reviews these consoles has tested this with many n64 and gamecube games including GoldenEye, Genshin Impact etc everything is so smooth even with beta builds.

Yes that is hard tradeoff to make- Almost for the same price:
iplay 40H: Either LTE+8GB+slightly better processor or
      Lenovo P11: No-LTE+6gb+slightly lower processor+Much bigger screen(1.5" diagonal)+Aluminium build+bigger battery.

I think IPS LCD screen quality is superb on both.

      • 4GB is ample for Android.

        • May be and may not be. Moderate no gaming use is getting to borderline ~3.5gb in a LG v30. Tablet content is heavy and now more and more apps will be enhanced for supporting large screen assets especially with 12L. Similarly for reading(Magazines, Web based news apps and video use) 2.6GB out of 6GB free in P11 pro. All these will run pretty fine in 3Gb or even 4GB devices as well but may have to clear up the cache and repopulate the cache when you switch between apps. For that matter even 2GB device will perform well if your use case is just 2-3 apps. TV's\TV sticks which handles high resolution content is still having 2-3gb ram in most cases. But that will reduce the longevity of the device. Best example being 2014's Kindle fire HD 8.9. fully opensource upstreamed SoC(TIM OMAP) and excellent full hd screen only marred by 1GB RAM and 8GB flash. So it is better to always buy something with double or even 4 times the resouces that you need today so that toxic waste dumping can be avoided.

Also after some time there will be motivation to develop custom rom's and other repurposing activity only if the device is capable.

    • bought the 11 pro last night with case last night for under $400

    • +1

      If it's 6GB vs 8GB then I much rather 6GB and have Widevine L1 support. I don't think you'll really feel a RL difference on 6 vs 8 GB.

  • bought 2 yesterday for ~AUD$264 each after cashrewards $25 off, bundle 1 without the keyboard

    • How did you get that price?

I can only seem to manage $288 before 5% cashback

      • cashrewards had a special $25 off just for 1 day on 11th November

  • How much is the kb worth?

As an owner of an Aldocube i20, I can vouch for this brand's durability. Very happy with it.

    • +1

I have the Alldocube X Neo and I concur; use it every day, zero issues and no bloatware.

  • Does anyone know what's the difference between the iPlay 40 & the 40H?

    • +1

      Android 11 (instead of 10) and a 6200mAh battery (instead of 6000mAh).

  • Can it make phone calls?

    • Yes.

  • I believe this has expired, coupon no longer works

  • +1

You can still get from Banggood at the cheaper price

  • Any thoughts on this vs lenovo m10 FHD gen 2?
