PC Part Recommendations for $2000

My nephew wants me to build it for Christmas so no rush and I can wait for sales on parts. Anything good out there so far for 2k? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/661080 this doesn't look too bad or is it? Prebuilt would be fine if cheap compared to building myself, if not I'll build.

Don't do it. You'll become free tech support for anything that goes wrong, up to and including "how did those scantily dressed ladies get on the screen by themselves?"

    • I've built PCs for everyone in the family so far. And I am tech support for the family, good for the resume for my possible IT career. So Rec's?

I'm glad to hear it worked out for you. You've got to start somewhere with a resume. I don't know about Renewable Energy Certificates.

  • TechFasts pre builds are pretty good value in the current inflated market

OEM Core i5 11400 can be had for $229
RAM $79 for 16GB at Mwave
    Heatsink: SE-224-XT $30~40 extra
Mobo GB B560 AORUS PRO $109

Case — pick anything you want $120~$150, some MSI cases have a Steam Gift card promotion.

EVGA SuperNOVA 750 GA PSU 750 watt $94
Samsung EVO SSD $152 + Claim copy of FarCry 6 game.

The tricky part is sourcing the GPU. You probably don't have a choice and won't have time to be picky since everything sells out as soon as they're listed, but pick any 3060 Ti or 3070 you can find, for $1000~$1300. If you don't have the time to hunt one down, buying a prebuilt is the most time-efficient way of getting your build complete.

Maybe start by actually buying the dGPU first. Once you got that, then the rest of the build becomes more easy to figure out, since you will know how much money you have left for your budget and what segment of the performance you want to target (Entry, Low-end, Midrange, High-end, Luxury).

If you're thinking just about gaming, Xbox Series X, is the best value for money where graphics is concerned. However, the PS5 does have the nicer controller and the better exclusives. Either options are more available and easier to find than a dGPU, let alone the entire parts for a PC. Just throwing it out there.

      PC only.

      • No need for the neg, was merely mentioning it. Remember the new-gen consoles this round are actually pretty competitive spec-wise with the industry. Then throw into the mix that PC Gaming has been hit hard by increased prices, scalpers, low availability, crypto mining, and then chip shortage. It's a doozy.

But take my advice, try to secure the dGPU first.
That is the bottleneck in your system. If you knock that off early, the rest becomes much easier. But still a difficult task to build a PC today.

If you're going for a pre-built, just know its going to take a long time for you to receive the goods. Not only does the vendor have to wait for delayed parts to get shipped to them, but have worker shortages in some of these places, eventually assemble and test it, then send it to you via snail-mail. And the prices are going to be higher, with some unknowns thrown in there (like spyware, or questionable quality of parts). So, yeah.

        • Who said I was the neg?

          • @tigs6969: I dunno.
Just saw your short reply 30 secs after you posted it, and had a neg then at the same time. Merely put two-and-two together. Then it happened again for my second comment after I replied. Quiet coincidental. But if I'm mistaken, then I apologise.

I don't really care about +/- honestly, I am more interested to learn if I said something wrong. That way, I can learn something new and move forwards. Otherwise I might continue spreading misinformation. But this requires people to actually comment. Negs on their own don't really teach anything (unless it's JV, then always downvote Haha)

  • Just go for pre build, other wise any problem he will ask you to have a look.
