Wireless Headphones with Great Sound Quality?

I currently use Beyerdynamic Lagoon ANC headphones while on the go, but the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired. It's more bassy than I would like and the treble is too harsh.

I use DT 1990 Pros at home so I'd like a portable set of headphones with similar sound quality (I guess the DT 1770 Pro is a better comparison here). Cost isn't a big concern for me but they need to be wireless with AAC support. Bonus points for decent ANC and a companion app with fixed-band or parametric EQ.

I have actually been seriously considering AirPods Max, but if there's anything else that can match the sound quality for cheaper I'd take it.

Anyone have any recommendations?

  • Have you tried the Bose 700? Seems like the sound quality reviews are pretty solid.

    • I’ll keep an eye out for those the next time i’m in a store, but the few comparisons I could find online seem to put the Lagoon ahead in sound quality.

      Thanks for the suggestion!

  • If you're in the Apple ecosystem, which sounds like you are and price really isnt an issue.. I'd go for the AirPods Max like you're considering.

As much as people tend to meme on them for its price, they get a lot of great reviews when it comes to sound quality. They're often available around $600-$650 now which is still really expensive compared to the competition but thats the Apple Tax, whats new.

Have you already tried the Sony XM4? A lot of people rave about their sound quality, at half the price too.

    • I haven’t properly tried the XM4s but several posters on OzB have said that they are worse sounding than the Lagoons (specifically poorer bass quality) so the XM4s are probably not for me.

  • Depending on the headphones - I don't know about the setup of the ones you've had - you can have a good set of heaphones plugged into a transmitter like this - https://www.taotronics.com/products/tt-br009-bluetooth-aux-a… - I haven't used it, but if your headphones sound great, and they have a plug like that, just jame it in and BOOM you've got portable headphoens that actually sound good!

    • Unfortunately my home headphones are bulky open-backs that have a mini-XLR port, so they're extremely unsuitable for outdoor use.

  • Xm3s are pretty good, I like them better than the Bose QC35 ( I have both). Look at the Sennheiser Momentum, they might be more what you're after, especially since you're complaining about bass which Sony's have plenty of (but I think overall they sound great! And you can EQ them).

  • There are wireless hifiman I would check those out.
