Sand Flies in the garden

Hello,

We have been in our house for just over 1 year now, and it fits the bill for everything apart from darn sand flies in the garden. Has anyone had experience in how to deal with these pesky critters short of moving? Unfortunately the house is across the road from the creek.

Thanks.

  • Move.

    • to Mars?

      • Venus.

        • To the moon of cos!

  • On hot days you could set up some sort of water mister to keep away the flies and keep yourselves cool at the same time.

  • Try one to start with and make sure you check them out before getting one as some are noisy and some are not water proof etc etc. After trying one buy some more to cover the back yard.

  • Midges!

Not much you can do, just the usuals…repellents etc. Although they don't like air movement, so fans are really useful.

  • Drain creek

Fill the creek with chlorine and pestacide

Your going to fight with this problem for as long as you live there - or as long as the mozzie/sandfly farm is across the road.

  • CO2 Traps are more effective than just a mozzie zapper. The CO2 acts as a lure.
Something like this https://www.pestrol.com.au/buy-online/terminator-mosquito-ki… used with the CO2 attractant https://www.pestrol.com.au/buy-online/boosters-outdoor-x-3/ should lure in midges as well as mozzies. The idea of these systems is to run them all day in midge season over months with the goal of reducing the population. Not sure how successful this will be given your proximity to the creek but would be an interesting experiment. My parents had some success using a CO2 traps on a large property with mosquitoes.

You could also try something like this barrier spray for your property https://www.pestrol.com.au/buy-online/biting-midge-mosquito-…

There’s info on the Brisbane council website that makes reference to using the barrier spray too https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/clean-and-green/natural-envi… just be mindful it’s not good for bees etc hence it says not to spray on flowers.
