    Are they good

  • These will not have 14km range, probably at most only a few hundred meters in open terrain and worse in built up areas.

Definitely not 14 km, but should make 5km in good conditions.

      • Technically they could transmit that far (and possibly further) if it were line of sight

        • Or using one of the many repeaters:

          https://tropinet.com/uhf-repeaters/

          • @FredAstair: Hmm, does it support duplex channels though?

            • @eug: It should do, CH1-8 and 41-48 being duplex is part of the Australian UHF standard.

Edit: the user manual found on their website clearly states it has the duplex channels

They're part of the standard, but is it a requirement to support them? Those channels can be used in simplex mode if there are no repeaters on them.

Edit: the user manual found on their website clearly states it has the duplex channels

I read the manual earlier, but there is no mention of how to activate duplex mode. The assumption would be that those channels are permanently in duplex mode, but section 5.3 states that if there is no repeater in the area those channels can also be used for simplex communication - which would not be possible if you couldn't toggle duplex on/off.

In any case, if it was permanently in duplex mode, imagine the complaints or returns by people saying the radio is faulty because 16 of the channels "don't work" with each other. :)

Seeing that the radios don't even support CTCSS tones, it wouldn't be a stretch for them not to include repeater support.

                • @eug: In terms of requirement to support them I think you will find that it is a requirement and every 80ch radio currently sold as an 'australian UHF radio' would be duplex on those channels. I know some radios have the option for direct transmit on those repeater output frequencies but saying that I think you fill find a lot of radios won't have an option for simplex mode on those repeater channels (like these ones) as it would just add even more confusion into the mix particularly when there are dozens of other channels to choose from.

I think you might also find some radios omit chanel 61, 62 and 63 as they are reserved and not supposed to be used so im sure some people might complain that not only are there '16 channels that don't work' its 'also missing 3'! lol

Something with 2 W power will get you up to 5km in good conditions, and reliably work within a few kms.

Are these genuinely 2W? They look a bit small in size - generally the higher wattage, the bigger the size of the unit.
Anyone use these before and can give feedback?

    • Hard to tell the size but SCA wouldn't advertise that they are if they weren't, 2W isn't a lot really either. You can get the baofeng uv5R which are 5W and are pretty small.

    • They're about the size of the palm of your hand, not very big but not miniature either. I can measure one tomorrow if you're interested.

Box says 2W and has a 3 year warranty.

  • It's a new Australian brand with very little internet footprint that is also sold on Anaconda. There's a distinct lack of actual humans vouching for it though..

There's a youtube review of the 5w version of the same brand by it seems an authentic Qld'er

Do keep in mind that these do not have CTCSS tones. I personally wouldn't buy a radio without them, but not everyone needs it so this may be suitable for you.

    Manual is here

I have these, just tried to use them today for their first real test (had previously used when convoying cars which worked fine). When about 300m out of line of sight and couldn’t communicate. Useless will be returning

Picked these up today, seem to be ok quality. Will be using this weekend so will report back after.

Used one of these the whole day 4x4 in the watagans today, was never more than about 1 km away from the group while driving offroad through the forest, no problems at all.

Speaker very loud, had it on lowest setting. For $40 a handset i think they're a bargain. I attached the belt clip on it (2 screws) and clipped it to the sun visor.

For the money I'm very happy.
