My Nissan X-Trail is 5 years old & I have always had it serviced regularly at Nissan. I noticed after my last service the GPS was very slow & at times would not operate, I contacted Nissan Service Center & they stated that i would have to bring it in & have the car hooked up to their computer system & diagnosed, this would be an extra cost of $150.00. I explained that i had no problems before the service & that i always brought my car into the same Nissan service center so i am totally perplexed that this has happened & now to fix it i have to pay another $150.00 just to see what the problem is. Can anyone suggest the easiest & cheapest way to update my GPS or do I have to go back to Nissan for them to update the GPS?

Thank you so much for your reply.

Built in GPS are almost always complete pieces of crap, even in a brand new Outback its so slow you can barely scroll the map without it freezing.
Now obviously the performance issue and the map updates are seperate. Make it clear to Nissan its the performance issue you want them to rectify for free, not the updates.

Yes, install a new head unit that supports Carplay and Android Auto.
This, then you can just keep your phone updated and it will always work.
I thought it was funny when I bought my new car a few years ago that they offered the ability to have built in gps for a lot of extra $. Why would I want something that is going to cost money to update and is hard to use when I take my phone with me everywhere anyway and would always be plugging it in to the carThank you so much for your reply.
Thank you for your reply! As per vedit comments "how did you even manage to connect to nissanconnect app? it asks to scan a qr code in the glovebox or enter an imei code. I wasn't able to find both.
i have been quoted from 500 to 800 for headunit change."
Is it easy to connect to the Nissanconnect app? And I checked the price for a headunit change & was quoted $1500.

I take it that was for a OEM unit from a stealership at that price?
Nothing wrong with a third party unit.
Many brands are compatible with Nissans and at 1/3 of that price, or better.
If you are not confident with fitting it yourself the stores such as SCA and Autobarn etc. will recommend a suitable unit as well as organise the fitting for you for a few extra dollars.

You could try the Nissan Navigation Portal to see if you qualify for any map updates.
