  • The problem with JB Telstra plans is that they have no standard international dialling included.

    • U mean most Telstra plans? I think you can still add international call pack right

      • Can't even be added afaik.

        • +1

Just checked. Yes you can add the pack

          • +2

@siiking: Can I ask who you checked with? Telstra told me last week that you can't add the international pack to 3rd party plans now (I did it with them last year with no issues but they're saying it's not allowed now)

      • My "small" plan has 30 minutes a month, it's about 4 months old at this point so unless they have removed it the standard plan has it.

    • +4

Why wouldn't you just use FB messenger or whatsapp or something?

      • +8

You are assuming everyone uses IM apps.

        • +1

Donno why u get downvoted. And yeah my grandparents aren’t that skilled with those apps. I found some Internet phone call service better deals if u don’t make overseas calls that often.

      • +4

Sometimes you need to call some official numbers overseas for telco, government organisations, companies etc.

        • +1

I agree but $5 of Skype credit will give you that ability - and it lasts a year.

          • @R4: Not sure about others, but Skype wouldn't let me call overseas when on mobile network. It only works when I'm on WiFi

            • @BargainHunterMYz: I've never had a problem with that - although I don't use it very much.

      • +1

Simply maybe cos the people whom you want to call don't have access to the net ? A lot of the world still runs on 2G and less

        • +1

Many apps have inbuilt voip functions. You can still call standard numbers.

But still I don't understand how a $59+ plan can't have overseas calling or at least a budget to do so. This isn't the 90's.

          • @plmko: Exactly!
I have a $150 Boost, 12 month plan with unlimited and timed OS calls included + free SMS

      • those apps only work in some countries

you can use vpn to access facebook and whatsapp but again most people in those countries dont feel comfortable or are a bit hesitant to take that risk

      • I need it as I can't make calls on messenger or whatsapp while using Android auto. Plus unless u have very good network the call quality can be spotty over internet while direct call would work just fine.

  • Anyone know if there's a way of getting this deal if you're with Boost? I can't see making a new number and asking to cancel the new one working if you're with Boost.

    • +1

If you wanted to go that route, you'd get a new number with the JB plan, port boost into a Telstra prepaid and then get the contract moved over to that number.

Pretty messy and afaik it can result in some downtime on primary number, but can be done.

If you're waiting for a JB deal 59 come along better off getting onto some other provider.

      • Yeah. I might switch and wait out. Cheers man!

    • +1

I've done it before. Just sign up to this deal with a new number and sim. Then talk to boost- not telstra (they were so terrible at trying to help with this) that you would like to transfer your number with boost to your new telstra plan, overriding the new one. Tried to get telstra to do it a few times and they were hopeless but the person from boost did it in less than 5 minutes.

      • I was keen to jump on this the day before the deal ended. The consultant was so honest and said he wouldn't recommend the process of porting boost over to teltsra contract with these conditions and terms. Risky and couldn't guarantee anything.

I think I'm seeking comfort and assurances from randoms on ozb!

        • Just offering my own experiences. There wasn't any issues and it was really quick and easy but if you are unsure about it no worries.

          • @PaddlerSam: No, I thank you. It was your account plus a few others that have provided me with more confidence than if I didn't know at all. So Yeah I am keen and hoping that I will have the same experience. But I don't think many have thought to drive the change from Boost instead of Telstra. That might be the trick. The Consultant was quite honest and conservative, warning that people's experience will vary.

            • @dainese: Glad to hear. Yeah I think it might have to do with telstra support being offshore from my experience while I may have had an Australian that was understanding my request when I spoke to the boost chat since it could be a little confusing. You just have to be clear with which number you want to keep. I just kept the telstra sim in my wallet, spoke to boost and when I lost reception and hour later I swapped them over. Was easy with boost too since i was paying month to month as well.

              • @PaddlerSam: Cheers, yeah I think the Telstra consultants would have rules or expecations over what they can do. If the offer is specifically and predicated on a new number than maybe they consider anything but that to be breaking the offer or contract. The jb hi fi consultant said that technically would be within their rights

              • @PaddlerSam: Hi mate, picked up the phone on the last day of the sale. So you would suggest first attempt would be to speak directly to Boost? And the request is as simple as adding the Boost mobile number to the new telstra account and 'deleting' the new Telstra number?

                • +1

@dainese: Yeah I just used their online chat earlier this year but it seems like they have switched to a call number. Give them a call and let them know you would like to transfer your current boost number to your telstra post paid number, overriding the old telstra number in the process.

                  • @PaddlerSam: It's not going well so far….

Boost seemed to understand and put my number in quarantine. Then said I had to finalise with Telstra. Have tried multiple times now. Not good. Not looking good.

might have to just cancel the telstra contract and cop the termination fee. very disappointing if I don't get much more traction!

                    • @dainese: That's odd, sorry to hear you are not having the same experience as me. You can try with Telstra too to see if they are able to bring the number over or perhaps try with another operator? Worse case is your early termination still results in a net gain as it is less than the value which you saved? I'd keep trying for a bit if you can

                      • @PaddlerSam: OMG fixed. I think the trick is to drive it home from the Boost end. I tried Boost again this morning and managed to get the same consultant as last week. Sorted out after a call back and them instructing telstra consultant.

So relieved and happy. Thank you for your advice and help.

                        • +1

@dainese: Yeah, exact same experience as me, Boost is deffinitely the way to go with getting this move done. Glad to have been helpful, enjoy your plan.

    • +1

As a Boost user I just bought this in JB outright for full price while there was stock about…. I couldnt be bothered after the Telstra spiel.
Finally my Pixel3 USBC port died.

  • +4

Do they even have stock of the pro?

    • Noone does lol. But you can order it.

  • moved to kogan for a month after my telstra contract ended, now I'm waiting for the bonus monthly 10 dollars off deal to be back, we'll, if any.

    • I think you have to stay off Telstra/Boost for 90 days now before porting over. Used to be 30 but they seem to have increased it. I too am on the same boat.

      • +3

Jb staff confirmed its still 30 days

        • Did this count for Belong mobile too?

          • @dtox: You can port across from Belong on this deal.

  • +2

Telstra has poor reception in Canberra..very difficult at times..

    • +4

So does Optus, really bad in many parts.

      • +2

Ironic that Voda is the only carrier with consistent coverage in the ACT. Ib remember the days when they were the ones everyone used to criticize.
I'm in southern Sydney and Telstra coverage is hopeless here too.

        • +2

Funnily enough Optus works well on the Northern Beaches and almost all of the way down the M31 to Lizard Land.
I wonder if Vodafone works in WA now. It used to be shockingly bad in 2008 ish.

    • +1

How is that possible when they have a mega tower on the biggest hill in town??

      • +2

It's busy beaming Covid via 5G to the masses.
        Not telephone services. Duh.

  • What happens if you immediately change your plan to the $55?

    • +2

Guessing there's an early termination fee.

      • Bingo. Etf is 50% of remaining plan fees.

  • +2

Still happy with my Pixel 5 (well happy enough for $805)
Just easier getting outright and a Boost sim for f all, unless your work pays for it.
Not personally a fan of 2y contracts

Currently loading Android 11 back on ;)

    • +1

      this is 12 months.

      • +1

Nice, that would go quick enough

    • +1

Currently loading Android 11 back on ;)

Offt, I've been seeing how raw Android 12 is atm.

      • +1

Maybe a clean install is could be worth it first, but it's all just bubbly and cosmetic changes, with worse productivity and battery drain

      • I have 12 on my 3xl. Had an issue or 2 with email (couldn't go from viewing and email back to the email list) and some poor stability in carsales app (but when is carsales ever stable amirite?).
12 is good on the 3XL and I'm not going back to 11 but I may go to 6pro like a good little consumer ;-)

        • Fwiw I ended up doing a factory reset and clean install of Android 12 (not from backup) and the battery is much better. Recommend doing this even though it's more effort. Probably good security wise every so often and getting hardly any spam SMS now. Was tempted to install 11 but kind of pointless now.

  • +1

I wish Telstra would sell something similar and allow existing customers to signup, rather than using 3rd parties like JBHiFi

  • +5

Really not seeing a deal here. Each to their own.

    • +1

If you stack the Google discounts it's cheaper.

      $70 off coupon + 10% off + $100 store credit takes the $999 down to $736.1 total.

      • +1

How does one get 10% off?

        • +1

Sign up for a month of Google One which gives 10% of all store purchases.

          • @TogTogTogTog: I have a Google One sub but I never see this 10% off mentioned anywhere? What the…

        • +3

It is a 10% back as Google credit, so not exactly 10% off the price. But if you wanted some other stuff, it can work in your favour.

          • @Mattycee: Yeah, it's not a flat $100 return. I consider it equivalent to the JB Hi-fi free Nest promo.

    • If work pays for your plan it's a very cheap phone as a bonus.

If you pay for your won stuff and need a new phone both are tax deductible, so you get 37% back from the yearly plan, and 37% back from the phone in full, as it comes on it's own receipt. - Works out cheap for sure.

  • I've got the Pixel 5 and was keen for the Pixel 6 or 6 Pro until i held them at a store. The 6 are just too big compared to the 5.

Hoping S22 or P7 will be similar size to P5

    • i would like to know where to buy p5 for a nice bargain

      • FB marketplace

      • Yeah used they start from $500-700. I think you should not pay more than $600 give or take

        • Definitely. Hell no I would pay 500$. for that

  • Can someone please tell me what the receipt for $799 looks like? Need it for tax purposes.
If anyone has an example, would appreciate if they can send me an example

    • Previous deals it showed the phone price in full and $500 gift card (or higher $) is used to pay part of the phone.

    • It shows the full price, the gift card is just a payment method.

  • Nice…

  • Would this apply to the 256 GB versions?

    • +2

My understanding is that the $500 off applies on the retail of any of the phones

  • +1

Don’t do it peeps. The JB plans are limiting and expensive. You won’t save on the phone. Telstra also see them as external, and a simple change or upgrade of your plan 3 months out will come with a disconnection fee. Telstra are the worst to deal with too. If you can afford it, buy the phone outright and get a prepaid sim or Telstra (or Optus - even better) BYO plan.

    • also when you consider how good the Aldi plans are, for price to price, you're saving about 45$ a month not being on a T$ plan.
45x12 = 540$ towards an outright phone, on a great data rollover plan with no commitments.

    • I am usually quite careful and dubious of these deals but I am trying hard to resist it. I am on boost now and spend around $30 a month anyway, and this JB deal with Telstra seems like a decent way to get the new phone and spread the cost without a stupidly long contract. A bit torn

      • +1

Yeah this is why they are tempting

    • +1

The only reason I'd buy this deal is 5G really.

    • I always buy one outright, and sell the old phone within two model updates. All these plans aren't that cheap and although I've never really had prepaid I've got to say that this boost ultra anytime 365 Sim has been great for cheap, plenty of data etc.

PS. I've heard the fingerprint scanner under the screen is a bit rubbish?

  • -1

I'd probably lose money on this deal… Already paying $25/month for unlimited text/calls/mobile data…

    • +1

Felix is $35 with UNLIMITED 20mbs data, whos $25?!?

  • difference is u get phone at fill price and 5G at 27.3 dollars

  • Hi guys sorry newbie here but what is the simplest way of getting on this deal?

My 12 month jb hifi plan for 500 gift card is expiring this week and i want to get on this.

I have to port out and in as i know it. Do i head to optus sign up to a month to month for example and cancel right away? That will cost me quite abit as well as time.

What is the oz bargain bargainers way of doing this?
    Cheers

    • +1

Sign up for new number. Call Testra, as them to deactivate new number, move old number over and cancel old plan.

  • Is this plan available on an esim?

  • I signed up with a new Telstra number on the JB pre-order Pixel 6 Pro deal while my existing number remains with Telstra prepaid. I'm still waiting for the phone to arrive though. Is there any risk in asking Telstra now to deactivate my new number and move my exisiting number across prior to receiving the phone? Don't want JB asking for $500 to hand the phone over when it finally arrives, for instance. Thanks.

    • I doubt it. The $500 GC is issued by JB. What you're doing is with Telstra. I did it before the phone arrived. So I know it works.

  • do you still get the giftcards if you purchase an iphone instead?
