Is It Safe to Buy a Smart Switch off eBay?

Hi

Looking to get a 3 or 4 way smart switch to use for kitchen lights and fan. I saw some at Bunnings for about $60 and have seen ones on eBay for $28.

Is there any reason to stick with the more expensive ones or would buying from an Australian seller on eBay be fine?

Judging by the ebay feedback, I'd be buying at Bunnings..Shit I'd probably buy from Kogan first…

Care should be taken with electrical purchases online as many of these drop shipped items do not meet Australian standards and most Electricians will not install them or issue a certificate of compliance.

It may be an Australian based seller, but it'll be typical Chinese junk they are selling, the seller's feedback rating is terrible.

Your insurance company will also deny any related claims if something went pear-shaped.

    • Exactly what he said.

      • 1000% agree with 240V electrical make sure its OZ approved (has a state approval number), international approvals mean nothing in OZ for electrical.

Watch if they are really OZ based as they may be based in China and drop ship from Smithfield in Sydney as this is where the container/box is unpacked and then sent via an OZ courier or post.

Just checked the post an this is NOT oz approved as the cap is a no no no in OZ.

    • It's no an OZ store… Chinese drop shipper through Melbourne.

  • Check out the store about and you will see they are from the usual suspect country w.r.t. cheap electrical bits that are not approved for OZ… YES… CHINA!!!

  • Can see those failing within 2 years . Also - touch light switch? Nothing beats a normal light switch when you're moving quickly around the house, have wet hands, hands full, holding basket of clothes etc. A touch light switch is a solution in search of a problem.

  • What about electrical goods with a CE or TUV certification, IF genuine they should be ok for Australia?. Our many sparkies should know - thanks for your views on this situation.

    • They have to be OZ certified or they will kill you

    • CE and TUV mean nothing in OZ when plugging into 240V with regards to meetings OZ standards. They mean that they pass international standards for something, but you will need to lookup the certification to find out what.

  • Thanks everyone looks like I’ll stick to Bunnings 😊
