Westons Old Rosie Cloudy Cider 2L $12/Btl (Normally $19.90) + Delivery (Free C&C) @ Dan Murphy's (Members Only)

180

Great member special price on one of my favorite drinks. Not your usual sickly sweet straight forward cider, this has no fizz and has some interesting complexity being made from proper cider apples rather than eating apples. I prefer drinking it at room temperature so the flavors are more apparent. It is not as potent as it used to be as the ABV has dropped to 6.8%, which is still fairly decent.

Be warned not to ozBargain this if you haven't tried it due to the fantastic drinking value it represents; this cider is polarizing and won't appeal to everyone. Most people I know don't like it at all.

  • I'm intrigued, gonna have to try a bottle.

Basically eq to a 6 pack of 333ml bottles/cans @6.8%abv might make some interesting mixes being non-fizzy but I'm keen to find out. I like some of the less sweet gritty/unusual ciders, let's see.

Sounds better when you can tell the police you've only had one drink.

It is a very particular scrumpy cider. I would recommend to drink it very cold and keep the bottle still for a few hours to settle it a bit - it should become golden clear. Pour it carefully then to not disturbe the deposit.

  • It's a glass flagon, right? I need some reusable glass containers about that size.

Its a pretty good scrumpy, quite dry as a scrumpy should be. If your coming in new & only ever had stuff like rekorderlig, its worlds apart in quality & sugar content.

The colder the better, has quite a bit of sulphites which can lead to bad headaches even in moderate amounts.

  • time for scrumpy hands!

  • Would suggest proceed with caution, tried this in previous bargain, had to mix it away to finish it
Its taste is unique and does not have the popular alcopop type of flavour, it was cheap for its alcohol content

    • So the initial taste of off, tastes like something went wrong but the finish is great, and your tastebuds tend to change the more you drink it. Best cider I have ever had.

had the same experience as a teen when some mates and I liberated some kegs of cider (and vinegar) from the Cascade brewery in North Hobart 3 decades ago. Drink enough and it tastes good eventually.

Absolutely brilliant for seafood mornays and roast pork sauces, and a nice refreshing drink when you don't want hoppy, bitter or saccharine.

Not real scrumpy though, I doubt there's even a maggoty steak in any barrel let alone a dead rat. They're probably seeing if it's ready with meters and all that sciencey tom-foolery…

Just buy a $2 bottle of 2L apple juice, <$5 for a sachet of cider yeast, put 1/10 of the yeast in the bottle and a week later you'll have a cheaper better scrumpy cider with no preservatives

Used to do this using "turbo yeast" from eBay. Quite bad but very effective.

      • I reckon cider yeast is best. Safcider is cheap and good.

Yeah I've heard it can be nice if you do it properly. Grape juice works great too.

Gave this one a go and it was definitely an interesting experience. Personally the smell was a little too close to apple cider vinegar for me to enjoy fully but I'm glad I tried it.

  • Great deal, was going to post this as a separate deal, but found out someone had already posted it. Proper pommy cider even if its nowhere close to a true scrumpy, bloody good value and yeah the bottle is pretty gnarly as well.

As well as not being as alcoholic, Ive noticed that they seem to have stepped off on the bitters, last time I tried it you could tell there were some fairly significant proportions of Black normans or the like, seems predominantly a tart cider now.

  • From some of the comments I was anticipating something weird and wonderful but it seems kind of normal to me. Normal is good.

  • Just tried it. So good. If you don't want sweet, this is amazing!
