Intel 12th Gen? or Wait for New AMDs?

Reviews look good for the new 12th Gen, other than the fact that you need to buy a new Z690 board and DDR5 to make full use of it. I've got a 5900X+3080 now, wondering if its worth to upgrade?

    I've got a 5900X

    Definitely no

    What are you upgrading for?

    • +3

To contribute to global warming and the waste of resources?

    • Bragging rights of course.

Jeez. You already have a 5900x+3080 that most people can't even get their hands on.
That gig will get you a few years

I doubt you are even fully utilizing 5900X outside of a few niche use-cases. Is this troll post?

Depends what you value more slightly higher frames or money in bank account.

As someone with a 5950x, 32gb 3600 CL14 Ram, RTX 3090 i dont see a need to just yet, so unless you have plenty of disposable cash and must have the absolute best which if that where you then you wouldn't be on a page called ozbargain.

      As someone with a 5950x, 32gb 3600 CL14 Ram, RTX 3090 …

Dude, all things aside, did you just flex your RAM timings?

  • I'll grab the 5900x off ya

i mean if you wanna pay $2500 for a ~5% increase in performance (depending on the workload) and double your power bill, sure, go for it

Maybe they just hate money and they feel compelled to jump at any and every opportunity to burn it.

Brag threads getting out of hand.

    If I had a 5900x I wouldn't be thinking about upgrading for - quite literally - 5 to 10 years.

The gap between 2021 and 2031 CPUs won't be nearly as wide as between 2011 and 2021 CPUs, and 2011 CPUs can still game just fine - just not at the highest framerates (and with a bit of microstutter).

  • The DDR 5 cost is the killer right now.

You can probably sell current CPU and mobo and upgrade for not too much cost if you go i5/7 but the memory is the issue. ddr4 z690 would bring cost down but then half the allure of having a good upgrade path is gone

  • What value are you seeking to realise from the upgrade? That will help determine the worth.

Power use? Performance? Future-proofing? Being on the bleeding edge?

    • Just posting to flex.

      • Evidence?

OP, based on his/her posting history, they seem like an early adopter with tech BUT not in a mindless/cash-burning way.

          Who upgrades for 1 generation.

          • -1

@askbargain: Plenty of people. CPUs, mobile phones, cars, game consoles. Want me to go on? Stop projecting your purchasing behaviours on others.

  • Go for it!

You'll have a latest'n'greatest set of hardware to enjoy and the current price of used hardware means less of a financial sting if you pension-off your current mobo etc.

  • 13th Gen Intel looks like it has a lot of potential. Might wanna wait for that.

New intel now then sell to upgrade to new AMD seeing as you like wasting money .
