Dad turns 70 next year, and I don't drink Scotch, what's a wank scotch I could buy him. Something real good, but say less than 300

    • Depends if he likes peaty or not. If not, then Balvenie or Macallan, whichever bottle is close to your budget.

      • Pretty sure he wouldn't even know what that means. He's an ex soldier who thought Stones Green Ginger Ale was good shit.

buy him a botte or two of starward nova

          • @avtek: Looks pretty good.

            • @tugman: especially if u wait for one of those 25 or 30% cashback/shopback specials

I'd buy him a case of Stones Green, take him to dinner and thank him for being dad. Win win.

I reckon 14yr single malt plus a decent dinner is the best way to go with that budget, diminishing returns set in above the $150 price range.

If you're in brissy, check out Walters steakhouse. Took my dad there for his birthday and he enjoyed it.

As someone who only recently got "into" whiskeys I would say stay with the mainstream whiskeys like Johnny Walker, Dimple, Chivas etc. I know purists scoff at blended but my experience is generally the unpronounceable single malt Scottish whiskeys are very strongly flavoured and off-putting to casual drinkers.

      • What about Japanese Whisky? I see them a lot on OzBargain

        • I don't know a lot about Japanese whiskeys but the few I have tried were "milder" so might also be good for casual drinkers
