After doing some googling I found these guys offering boxes for the cheapest price.
Most places seem to want you to buy 6x boxes to get around $165 each.

Can i be a little personal here?
How old are you (roughly)? What locations usually have adult players? What are the prize pools like these days?
I used to compete in my teen years, but im now over 30. Used to do quite well. Was even one of the approved eratta writers for cards. And part of the 'professor program'.
To this day i really feel like this is one of the most balanced card games and one of the few where you can play your opponent (if he has the prevolution, then odds are they have the evolution, etc). Most card games are all about deck vs deck, with luck. Strategy isnt nearly as possible in thing like magic; because you can only 'know' your own deck, not make quite accurate guesses at theirs, beyond colour.
Id love to play again, but im worried about being "that one 30yo" among the twelvies….

play TCG online on a ipad, buy 50 online codes (50 packs ) for less than 10 dollars and make a deck out of it for fun :)
I’m 35, but I buy because my kid is starting to love Pokémon and it’s a good excuse for me to get back into it.
I like you, played in my teens, my first cards were the base set and I even still hold some first edition cards from base set. Seeing how much kids still love Pokémon after 20 years gives me confidence Pokémon is no fad and buying these cards for fun (for me and my kid) can also have a slight investment value too. So much better than other toys where as soon as it’s ripped of packaging it’s basically a second hand toy.
Nakijo had them cheaper a little while back - they're the best!
