Not quite as nice as either Nissin Raou or Prima Taste instant ramen, but still tasty and better value for money.

  • +1

Was going to buy on Monday, glad I waited.
    Am off to Coles!

    Nutrition (https://www.nissinfoods.com.sg/en_sg/brands/items/6511/)
    Average quantity per serving [106g]:
    Sodium - 2060mg

Recommended daily intake for Australian adults (https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/salt)
Sodium - 2000mg (aim for 460 to 920mg to prevent chronic disease).

So over 1 day's worth of salt in one pack. But god damn it's tasty!

    • +1

yep, big part of the reason why it tastes good lol

    • +5

Dont drink the entirety of the soup and you should be better off.

      • +2

Or just use half pack of powder.

        • +4

          True. but half flavour though.

          • +1

@LennyT: The powder is the last step, just use less water.

            • +1

@Richardc: alternatively drain once ready, add about 1/3 of the powder, stir, add just a bit of boiling water to make the thing juicy

              who needs the soup anyway

        • +1

          Sacrilege!

      • Drain all the soup and add 100% water

      • +8

        Cough hypertension cough

        • -1

Only about 1/3 of the population is salt-sensitive to hypertension cough

          • +1

            @ZilogX: Source?

Only 10% of smokers get lung cancer, that doesn’t mean 90% of people should smoke.

@jackary: this is a non-academic forum, so I won't pollute it with pubmed resources

btw, your analogy is somewhat a non-sequitur

Have never heard or seen anyone having issue with consuming too much sodium or even MSG.

Except, you know, Japan. You know, the Japan you mentioned in your inane comment. The Japan that ha seen repeated governments wage war on sodium intake for years and years. I wonder why they're doing that?

Thanks for the ALL CAPS on BRAINWASHED though, tells us everything we need to know about you

        • -3

Yeah sure, as exptected! So bad my comment on weight on sodium/MSG attracts a bit of disappointment.

It seems a bit sensationalistic that salt is called out in the headline.

“What we know so far is only the tip of the iceberg; we only understand 10 percent of the whole problem,” Nakaji said.

“What we’ve found so far is that an unhealthy lifestyle, including smoking and or drinking, lack of exercise, excessive intake of salt, all impact on health.”

“The other 90 percent is problems related to weather, culture, education, income … and lifestyle habits exist on top of these other issues,” Nakaji added.

So from the researcher quoted in the article, salt constitutes just a fraction of the 10% of the health impact that is understood. It sits alongside smoking — which is well established as having a huge impact on health — but it sounds like the reason salt is being "blamed" rather than smoking is because the latter is harder to get people to change:

it’s not as simple as telling people to quit smoking, Nakaji said. “The situation would hardly change, and it would be irresponsible for us to say such a thing.”

It's disheartening that he feels hopeless about improving that, because:

the prefecture (Aomori) has the nation’s second-highest rate of smoking among men — as well as the highest rate of habitual alcohol use among men.

      • -2

I try to reduce my salt intake, but I also worry that the advice to reduce sodium might turn out to have as many caveats and exceptions as the advice to reduce fat intake (including eggs) of yesteryear.

        • -1

Not many people understand the medical "scientific" findings of today will easily be overturned by ones of tomorrow. I'm not consuming too much salt in everyday life but it doesn't mean I trust 100% the guy who spent 2 semesters doing his research experiment on 200 people, following by another 10 who backed that finding in the same manner - if anyone knows what I mean. Fact is I have seen in real life people experience low blood pressure due to lack of sodium intake, but not the opposite.

          • +3

@HaiG: Hey look, another muppet who confuses media reporting about science, which changes all the time because muppets love controversy, and actual science, which doesn't change much and when it does only changes a little bit.

But keep putting "scientific" in scare quotes, lets us all know what kind of winner you are.

Let us know when you take up smoking. The "science" about it causing cancer could be overturned any day now!

          • +2

@HaiG: Not sure where you're quoting a study of 200 people from, but here's some finding from a meta-analysis of 133,000 adults from 49 different countries:

Overall, roughly half of study participants had high blood pressure. After analysis, researchers found that sodium intake affected adults with and without hypertension differently.

In both groups, low sodium intake (less than 3,000 mg/day) was associated with 26–34% greater risk for heart events and death compared to moderate sodium intake (4,000–5,000 mg/day). However, high sodium intake (more than 7,000 mg/day) only increased risk for heart events and death in adults with hypertension.

Findings suggest that a low-sodium diet may not be for everyone. As other studies have shown, too little salt can be harmful in adults with and without hypertension. Authors believe current guidelines may be too low for the general population.

However, that doesn’t mean that sodium guidelines should be thrown out the window. There’s no question that a low-sodium diet is important for patients with high blood pressure.

Source: Too Much and Too Little Salt is Associated with Increased Heart Risks
[Original 2016 Study that was published in Lancet and has been well cited.]

The scientific process can deliver nuance, not just headlines. Unfortunately, nutritional science is particularly prone to sensationalist headlines that strip out that nuance.

        • +2

might turn out to have as many caveats and exceptions

Let me point out a big one: you are talking about processed food.

People are having this silly salt conversation as though the rest of it is healthy.

In fact a tried and true model of creating unhealthy processed food is taking cheap, unpalatable grain and adding salt and/or sugar to it so it tastes nice. It's not healthy before the sugar or salt is added.

Haven’t tried this one, purchased, thanks OP

  • +1

I bought both this and the Japanese export version, will report back with differences

  • +2

    This stuff is the shits

  • +3

These are yum. I usually add an egg for some nutritional value.

    • +1

      I also add a sausage

      • +14

I add an entire cow and it swims in the soup.

  • +1

These are my favourite. Stocked up on a couple of packs. Thanks OP!

  • +3

Maybe it'll be cheaper to buy from local asian grocery store.

    • +1

      Watch for expiry dates

      • +1

I'd bought a few from them, the expiry date is 19/06/2022.

        • Cool, there were rumours some Chinese Grocers put out ones which would expire within few months

    • where’s that? the ones closest to me don’t sell it cheaper than Colesworths, and I wouldn’t mind stocking up on some of the Hokkaido miso flavour as well

      • At New Yen Yen Supermarket at Hurstville, the Plus Code is

        24J4+WW Hurstville, New South Wales

        • ah okay, unfortunately I haven’t found this or other instant noodles cheaper than the supermarkets at asian grocery stores in Mel :/

    • +1

if you want cheap get these and season yourself
      https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/807432/jin…
texture is great, just as bad for blood sugar!

  • Seems like im the only person who don't like these.

  • +1

    No Tokyo shoyu :(

  • OOS

    • Odd, still showing up as in stock for me, even after clearing browser cache

  • +3

This is nice, much better than regular instant noddle.

I usually only use 1/2 to 2/3 of the reasoning to keep the sodium down.

    • +1

      That's quite reasonable.

  • -1

These are way better but slightly more exp this time around:

  • +1

    Salt me up

  • Never tried these. Are they any good?

    • +2

Just had them for the first time, yes pretty good broth. Had mine plain but with an egg and some pork belly I would say these are very good.

  • $3.50 every day in Asian supermarkets such as tong le

    • +1

my local tong le $5.95 when you buy 2…otherwise $6.50

  • Has anyone compared the Nissin Tonkotsu noodles to these? https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/122361/nis…

    • +1

the product in that link is imitation tonkotsu (i.e. pork bone broth flavour, without any pork), and personally I found it worse than their actual tokontsu instant ramen. If you want tonkotsu instant ramen, try their Nissin Raou Tonkotsu, which is sold at Japanese food stores.

As for comparing it to this, as with the hokkaido miso flavour mentioned elsewhere in this thread, the hakata tonkotsu flavour and the kyushu black garlic flavour are distinct, so it’s a bit little comparing apples and oranges and really just comes down to personal preference.

      • +1

thanks heaps! Did not know about Nissin Raou Tonkotsu at all. You can't find them in any Chinese grocer!

    • This deal tastes way better, the noddle is also different.

  • This is normal price at Asian grocers. Sometimes they have discounts down to $3.99

    • ymmv ofc, but I’m yet to find it at cheaper price at asian grocers in Mel

    • Yes, I now remember, paid $10 for 2 pack last year. Not sure if that was regular price or one off special, was a random buy.

  • I've actually bought it from one of the Asian groceries store and only costs $2.99 few months ago.

  • WTF are my noodles? Said next day and I'm stuck here eating maggi beef. Amazon says not even shipped yet. boo. That latest coffee deal from Arjoo or whatever got to me in Perth in like 1 or 2 days - couldn't believe it.

    • +1

Too many orders - 3788 clicks

My pack came today. Wow! These are really nice! Nice enough for me to get my phone out and log into OzBargain and say “My pack came today. Wow! These are really nice!”.

  • How do these compare to the Nissin Tonkotsu Black Garlic Oil?

Noodles are different obviously but how's the broth?

  • +1

In for a pack, thanks! Love them
