720k Velocity Points - What to Book?

took us a good 8-10years to save up these many points with a few small redemptions on the way. I want to treat the wife to something special next year - not too fussed on dates.

Any tips? Is this enough for first class london (or new york) return? checked velocity website yesterday and it seems all biz and first reward seats are unavailable

  • In my situation, I transfer to Singapore's Krisflyer as needed (but right now, that ability has been suspended).

A round trip to Europe in business class is 232,000 kris flyer points per person plus taxes.

If you transferred all the points over to KF it would work out to be 464,000 points (1.55 velocity to 1.0 kris flyer) which are spot-on for the two of you to get to Europe and back.

You can always register for Singapore's KF and do searches to see what kind of flights are available in the meantime.

There are the odd routes that offer better redemption value but that's personalised (for example, Australia to French Polynesia round trip is 25k kris flyer points flying Air NZ and these flights normally cost over $1,200 normally)

This great option of transferring to Krisflyer is never coming back, now that SIA is no longer a part owner.

      • Thanks for that info, I didn't know. That sucks.

        wrong.

        "Will Velocity-KrisFlyer transfers be returning?
If there were ever a burning question regarding Velocity among avid Point Hacks readers, this is it! If you’re unsure what we are talking about, please read our guide on transferring Velocity Points into KrisFlyer miles (and visa versa).

The answer is yes! Point Hacks has confirmed with a Virgin Australia spokesperson Velocity-KrisFlyer transfers will be returning. We just don’t know when yet, but hopefully this will be clarified in the coming weeks.

Just prior to its suspension, Velocity members could transfer their Velocity Points into KrisFlyer miles at a rate of 1.55 to 1. The same could be done by KrisFlyer members, just in reverse."

        • Wow, that's huge news! I wonder when that changed? Great find.

@madreece: Those who HODL'd and didn't cash out for gift cards will be surely rewarded soon with that news.

            • @MrThing: Making me re-assess that 150,000 Citibank Velocity offer.
              https://www1.citibank.com.au/credit-cards/citi-rewards-veloc…
I've also got 200k Flybys just sitting there as I didn't want to transfer them to Velocity. I'll wait for the next bonus and move them over.

              • @madreece: Now that velocity points are now on the cards again, hopefully we see more good velocity deals

also that 150k citi velocity is for 2 years, 80k first year, 70k second year

better off taking the 80 then cancelling and waiting another year

                • @MrThing: Really just up to 15 months.
An additional 70,000 Velocity Points will be credited to your Velocity account within 12 weeks of your Account being open for 12 months

                  • @madreece: depends on your churn strategy I guess

I always spend, get points and cancel - regardless of 2nd year bonus. I figure in 12months time their will be a new promotion where ill come out in front both on the 2years of fees and 2years of points collected.

plus getting rid of a credit card gives you flexibility to get another one (if your credit rating isn't too shot up)

Just keep an eye on carrier surcharges if you find availability, particularly on Etihad.

Save for the pending return of KF point transfer. then splurge.

Singapore airlines always has excellent reward availability… I booked a Manchester UK - Sydney in business reward flight for 6 weeks time.

Qantas / oneworld as usual, bloody nothing despite all the fanfare of "1million reward fares released". Joyce is as good at spin PR as scomo is

  • Ok thanks all - so transfer to KF is the way to go then as velocity reward seats seem like a non starter.

    • partner airline availability (other than etihad) was always terrible via velocity (to europe and asia. never searched from Americas). and even then as someone has said, etihad had huge co-fees to go with the reward booking

the go to was KF transfer. good availability and very very reasonable co-fees

  • does KF have first class to london or USA? can’t see much on their website

Singapore Airlines only has first class on their 777 and A380 planes so look for those plane types in the schedule. Flights to London do feature first class, and the flight from Singapore to Frankfurt to New York does as well. First class availability is not always easy to find - I recommend doing some tests with a range of dates to get a sense of where/when availability pops up.

Also, try searching sectors separately (e.g. SYD-SIN and SIN-LHR rather than SYD-LHR) to see what you can potentially piece together.
