Wired Vs Wireless Headsets for Gaming?

Is there a lot of difference in sound when it comes to wired vs wireless headsets?

I have a sit/stand desk and wanted to go all wireless (keyboard, mouse and headset) so I can switch between my work laptop and game PC with ease. But I don't want to spend $200 dollars on something thats gives poorer performance than a $100 dollar wired headset.

When I started working from home last year I picked up one of these, It has worked without a problems so far. It's much cheaper then replacing my wired keyboard, mouse and headphones.

    • Exactly what I'm doing! All three peripherals will be connected to this so I can switch between the systems!

  • Most Bluetooth headphones will have a wired 3.5mm jack, so if you think you can hear the difference between wired / wireless you can always plug it in.

As for whether Bluetooth sounds worse or better than wired, from a technical standpoint Bluetooth will always be inferior since sending audio over a wireless Bluetooth connection involves compressing digital audio into an analog signal at one end and decompressing it into a digital signal on the other. This conversion results in a minor loss of sound fidelity.

But from my experience with 2 different sets of headphones in the sub $200 range — I can't hear the difference between BT and wired. But I prefer BT since I can stand up from my office chair and have a stretch without getting the wire caught on my handrests and yanking the wire out from the pc…

Pretty sure Bluetooth adds considerable latency, for competitive gaming definitely avoid BT
It's why any decent gaming headset uses their own wireless dongle instead of BT

wired everything for gaming. many times my mouse, keyboard, or headset loses connection, lag, run out of battery, freeze, drop, etc…
also has a hiccup at the worst time in a big battle in game. i went back to wired, and have zero problems ever.

wireless when not gaming, because every split second doesn't count or matter.

i have been using wireless headsets for years and have never had a problem like that, same as my friends who also have used wireless keyboards/mice as well. wireless gaming peripherals would not be so prevalent if what you are describing were actually an issue.

      • I haven't experienced high latency or random dropouts with my wireless headset (SteelSeries Arctis 7) or mouse (Logitech G603). Both have indicators to show low battery so they don't die without warning.

Edit: Actually the SteelSeries headset had a buggy auto shutdown feature which would turn off headset after 1.5 hours even if in use. Had to turn it off to stop it

  • Wireless - Been playing Modern warfare with bloke at work lately - he's on PC Im on Xbox… most of the time he cant hear me, I can hear him fine… but I've never had the issue with Xbx->xbox
Changed to Wired (PITA really) and seems better - not perfect but better.

  • I go wireless for the headset because I like to stand up and move around without having to worry about yanking the cable.
Wired mouse is annoying too though not as bad as a wired headset. I'd recommend wireless for mouse too.
I don't see the benefit of a wireless keyboard though unless you need to move it around for some reason

    • The only reason I wanna go wireless for keyboard is because my USB switch (where the devices will be connected) is on my desk. And my current Razer keyboards wire is really long.

      • I looked into wireless keyboards a while back, I think the only decent ones for gaming were the Logitech "lightspeed" wireless ones but as you can see are pretty pricey
Not sure it it's changed since

        • Nah it hasn't. The best performing keyboards are all $150+ :(

  • I use a turtle beach 700 wireless headset for Xbox and PC. It's great.

  • I was in the same boat as you a month ago, couldn't decide between wired or wireless. Ultimately I decided to get a wireless Razer BlackShark V2 Pro Headset on special from JB HIFI. The headphones are extremely comfortable, great sound and microphone, and I haven't had any issues with sound drop outs. The biggest benefit of going wireless is you don't have to wind up a cable after each use which to me is worth the extra cost of wireless headphones.
