    Awesome thanks!

If you are wanting to play Gloomhaven, this is a good way to ease your way into it first.

  • Thanks!

    Excellent price.

If you haven’t got it already, get it at this price.

Heck yeah, have gloomhaven… Love it. Wanted to pick this up to drip feed some other friends into playing. Thanks op!

Is this the base game or expansion? Difficulty to learn? How's the game with 2 players?

    • +3

Base game (albeit a smaller spin-off of Gloomhaven proper), it's a complex game but has a fantastic tutorial design to ease you into it and it's excellent at 2P.

      • +2

Thanks bought one to try out

    • +2

Yeah its a base game/pre-quel to the main Gloomhaven game. Less scenarios and characters than the main but I think this is a great way to ease yourself into it, and the tutorial is really well done. The difficulty scales off how many players you have (2-4), and the instructions tell you how to set up the scenarios based on how many players there are. You can do solo but you will have to control 2 characters.
This guy does a great walkthrough of the game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCpQqrCiTDs&t=643s

      • +1

It's a great solo game btw, it's nice being able to take as long as I want each turn.

I really wanted to share quality time with the kids. But seriously I can't get them to play it with me regularly (i.e. it's been maybe 35 weeks since we played level 2).

So I might take your post as a sign to finally get it out and play with myself.

          • @ajm07: If you do, I also recommend using the Gloomhaver Helper app to manage all the upkeep, it takes care of the fiddly stuff while letting you focus on all the fun stuff. The Forteller app adds extremely high quality narration and audio as well but not as essential as the helper app is.

            @ajm07: ewww.

Great intro for any players new to this style of game and a great price.

The built in tutorials are very clear and mean you dont have to spend two hours reading or explaining rules before getting to play

JotL for $48 is insanely good value for the amount of content and the quality of gameplay on offer. Anyone even remotely interested in this should definitely jump on board at this price.

Check out the Gloomhaven game on Steam. Now fully released and is apparently 1:1 adaptation of the board game. My first introduction to Gloomhaven and I'm loving it.

    https://store.steampowered.com/app/780290/Gloomhaven

    • Note: the Steam version follows the original game's scenarios, and is different to Jaws of the Lion.

  • Hmm I would love this but I don't think I have any friends who will play fantasy rpg crawlers like this. Good deal though!

    • +2

      Same :(
I find they love party games like codenames, and this is too much of a step up for them.

      • My situation exactly! Codenames is one we have played. I can get away with Risk with them… but that's almost their limit of complexity I think. What else do you play?

        • +1

          Some are getting into Wingspan.
          Fluxx variants.

The theme of "unfair" is fun, but can get a bit complex.
          Small world. Revolution.
But most of the time it's codenames, sushi Go, emperor scum.

        • +1

Fast light games for people who aren't really boardgamers:

          Kingdomino
          Love Letter
          No Thanks
          Deep Sea Adventure
          Medici
          Azul
          Cockroach Poker

          • @GrueHunter: Quacks of Quedlinberg is also great.
Pretty fast to learn and then you've got the replayability of sushi go, just increase the complexity when you're ready.

      • add some baby steps in between.

  • Cheers, will stash as a Xmas pressie for the kids.

  • Oh wow! That would be an immediate buy if I didn’t already own it.

I bought this for $59 last week and though it hurts, I just logged in to tell anyone on the fence to go for it!

I have been through the first two scenarios with my wife and 9-year old and it's really fun strategizing with them. I am a tabletop D&D and video game nerd so I have a LONG background of playing dungeon-crawling/role playing games and the system is top notch.

    • Purchased this game during the prime day sale, simply because it was so highly ranked
      Haven't played D&D before
Now having read the positive feedback here I'm really tempted to open the box and give it a go

      • +1

Go for it! I would also highly recommend watching the tutorials by 'Watch It Played' on Youtube. He explains every rule and step for each tutorial scenario and I have been preemptively watching them so I can then guide my family through without pauses.

    • I feel your pain, I’d just received my copy yesterday after ordering it Sunday! I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised when I picked up the box to feel how heavy it was, made me feel like I’d spent my money wisely, unlike when I unpacked Chronicles of Crime to find a half empty box for the same money. I did as they said and punched out the tokens etc and packaged them up and then realised I really do need to invest some time into reading/watching the tutorials.

  • Amazing game!

  • God dammit, I been avoiding this because $70 was just a little steep, but $50? Insta buy.

    Cheers op

Never played gloomhaven, casual gamer. Bought due to comments. Go Oz bargain!

  • Thanks OP.. got one.. :) Should make for a good xmas gift

  • This game is phenomenal. The learning curve isn't too steep but that said it is a heavy game. I've been playing it over a year and I still need to check on some rules and a game can easily take 2-3 hours. But it is amazing and they do make it easy to learn the rules and get started.

  • Thanks for sharing OP.

  • Just glad to get a copy before it sold out at this price :) Thx OP!!

  • +1

Bought the original Gloomhaven on a deal a while ago but never got past opening it and looking at the contents (no, not the boxes).
However never really got into playing it as it seems a bit too steep for my mob. So I have jumped on this one hoping that might be accessible enough to get them more interested.

  • Also a tip - there are some stickers and map to monitor progress. There is a separate reusable sticker set available. There's also some online spreadsheets you can find to track progress. Or what I did was just cut out the stickers and bluetac them on the map - easily resettable in the future!

Also a warning - you may find yourself going down the rabbit hole of figurine painting if you decide the grey characters aren't colourful enough. I've spent more hours painting than I have playing the game (and loved it). (Thumbs up for Vallejo 72299)

    • Preparing for reuse isn't necessary, so you can use the stickers the first time around and find another solution if you replay it (notepad with numbers on it will suffice).

  • We started out with 3 of us, and one of my pals was struggling a bit with the gameplay and combos at the start. We talked his partner into playing, and she's usually one for light n easy games, yet she loved her time with Jaws.

  • Back up to $60.. :( Been keen for this - I picked the wrong day to not watch Ozbargain!

Looks to be available on back order if you're still interested.

  • Bugger! Looks like it's back up at $75

    • Looks to be available on back order if you're still interested.

  • It's $59 atm and still a good price for a solid game.

There's about 25 scenarios and each scenario will take you about 30-40 mins, longer when you're first starting out, so there's a lot of gameplay with just one run through.

  • +1

Looks to be available on back order again.

  • Thank you very much OP. Exactly what I need in my life.

Have played hundreds of hours of the original with mates, wife wants to get involved but too complex out of the gate. This is perfect.

  • Just saw it was back on backorder & jumped on it! :)
