Advice Regarding Amazons New Payments and Credit Cards

Amazon now charge a surcharge for VISA, which is annoying, so I have begun to consider what life would be like with MasterCard (or any alternative)

I've been a Suncorp banker for many many many years. They only provide VISA. Nothing wrong with VISA, but I am now considering changing my credit card provider away from suncorp, and even changing banks.
I do not have an incentive to stay with them, its just one of those habits you form.

One thing that annoys me is the lack of NFC Google Pay with my Suncorp VISA.
I cannot find a sure fire filter to differentiate Credit Card providers that do offer Google Pay. If you know of one, please let me know… Canstar and Finder don't offer a filter for that feature.

I would love to have peoples thoughts of what they consider to be their favourite bank/credit card combo.

I'm personally a rewards guy who cashes in for gift cards. I don't need "travel" rewards. I don't care too much about annual fees nor interest free periods or rates - I pay my card off every week, I am just a sucker for convenience and not having to always ensure X dollars is in my savings account etc.

FYI, I have read and checked out a few providers and read the Credit Cards Wiki on OzBargain (great resource BTW)… I would just like to see people dump their bank/credit card providers here for me to get a clearer picture of what seems to be the preferred provider to investigate further.
Would love for the providers to offer Google Pay for the credit card too!

Thanks everyone.

Get a MC account from a another bank? (VISA probably charge extra from Amazon, so they passed it on to you)
    /thread

    • know of any that support Google Pay?

      • I though every MC provider support Google play? Im using CBA and 28D, they both support.

        • Citibank has entered the chat.

(Apple Pay and Samsung Pay yes, GPay no which is infuriating as a Pixel owner. Just as well they’re not my main bank)

Mastercard charge amazon too, so why are they not passing it down?

Just use the Suncorp rewards portal to get 3% off Amazon gift cards

      THIS.
Dodge the 0.5% surcharge and save 3% on top

American Express is fee free on Amazon. You can sign up for an American Express card without changing banks or anything.

    • Does that include US transaction?

      • No. Fee free for Amazon.com.au though

  • just get any cashback rewards credit card
as for Amazon, I thought about debit cards, but probably will end up getting discounted gift card through my insurance company
Suncorp or some others offer 3% to 5% discount on gift cards

Nothing wrong with VISA, but I am now considering changing my credit card provider

That's Amazon slowly winning - shaping your behaviour to suit their own politics. Just one of many small cuts. Use your new credit card at Amazon to first buy this.

does every retailer that doesn't accept amex, or charges a higher fee for amex, also fall in your category of 'suit their own politics'?

      • Sure. But it's a bit different being yelled at by a little kid than it is to have your arm twisted by the mob.

    • you are right of course. with such market dominance from visa and amazon, visa is the one that will suffer, consequently amazon have the clout to undermine one provder over another to suit their agenda as well. its a lose lose situation for consumers in respect to improving corporate profit.
are you suggesting i happily pay the surcharge to support visa?

In fairness, i should just not use amazon at all as the alternative… but we are all shopping for the best deal to save ourselves money… capitalism ftw?

      • are you suggesting i happily pay the surcharge to support visa?

        No, but…

In fairness, i should just not use amazon at all as the alternative

        is an alternative.

but we are all shopping for the best deal to save ourselves money

IMO nothing wrong with that but it should involve a larger view than just a single immediate gain. (Personally, Amazon is generally the last place to shop but I still consider them for a ripper deal. For me it helps if I surmise they are making nothing / very little from the deal; I'd never give them the low hanging fruit).

      • with such market dominance from visa and amazon, visa is the one that will suffer

if either in that pair is the dominant one its Visa right?
Visa and Mastercard make up what percentage of all credit card transactions in the world?

what percentage of retail purchases are made via amazon?

If anything, its the little fish amazon trying to get a better deal from one of the two that hold the credit card processing power ;)

    • Tbf it's more like Visa slowly losing a bit, as they don't offer any the same incentives as others. They are in a more dominant position, so other providers are trying to steal their customers, although the lazy ones won't care.

  • Happy with my Westpac account and it comes with a Mastercard. I also top up my Amazon gift card balance from surveys, it doesn't take long to get a $20 gift card.

    • Wow what surveys do you do for Amazon giftcards? I only know about Google ones

      • Competitions.com.au

  • For some reason all my banking institutions moved to MC years ago. Visa is just shooting themselves in the foot at this point I guess.

    Zip Money.

  • Get 2% discounted Amazon GC with your visa credit card on say SB?

Prob won't work on Amazon US

  • arent they a limit of purchases for the discounted gift cards? its really useless.

I can only buy $500/month with AAMI Lucky Club and $480 with ShopBack.

  • I am using Revolut Virtual Card (Visa) for Amazon. Haven't noticed any extra charges.

  • It's only Visa credit cards that get the extra % charge. Visa Debit cards do not.

Get a direct debit card. Credit is old skoool.
If you want credit, per se, at checkout, select AfterPay.

    • +3

Since when does Amazon do Afterpay?

      • +1

        Ignore the troll. Seriously.

        • +1

Yeah but I always like to call them out just to see what they say :)

    • +3

Get a direct debit card. Credit is old skoool.

old skool is using your own money.
New skool is using someone elses money fee free while allowing your own to be of benefit to you.

  • Why not using Zip Pay? I linked my Visa credit card to ZIP and pay in full at due day.

I know this is Ozbargain, but OP seems to consider ethics to a degree. This consumerism for lowest price and convenience is not helping improve things in the world. When choosing a bank (as well as what kinds of companies we support with our patronage), perhaps we should more often look at the bigger picture rather than the tiny advantages we get from the massive scale corporations like Amazon or the big banks. These big companies usually get their dominance through exploitation and bullying and by choosing them we are complicit in this.

I know it's tricky sometimes, and you don't want to disadvantage your own pocket for choices you don't think are going to make much of a difference, but it all adds up. The average consumer can make a difference when more people make more ethical choices. This can be seen in some of the options for Super investments now as an example.
