Calories Burnt in Apple Vs Galaxy Watch

Hi All
I have been using the new galaxy watch 4 classic to track my outdoor cycling and calories burnt. My partner has the apple watch 5 and to compare the workout/heart rate, I wore both watches and tracked my calories. Apple watch measures calories in active Kjoules and hence I had 428 Kjoules reading. When compared to galaxy watch 4 , it indicates 252 Kcalories. Now I am confused since 1 kcal =4.184 Kj
so going by Apple Calcs, I burnt only 102 kcal and going by GW4, I burnt 1054KJ hence trying to ascertain which one is correct.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

No fitness tracker measures calories accurately. It's a basic formula based on your weight, heart rate, speed and distance. It's only relevant compared to other workouts in your own case.

The measurements on smartwatches and other wearables aren't really accurate and will vary between different devices. You shouldn't really compare values between devices. They're only useful to track how your activity has changed from day to day using the same device.

  • It's a guide, not a scientific measurement.

Were both watches set with the same base data, i.e. your gender, age, weight, height etc? Or was your partner's Apple watch linked to their Apple account and their settings?
On fitness devices, it is usual to set such base data for use in computations of calories burnt during activities.

    • Probably it has my partner's age height weight etc.

Get a few more watches and take an average.

Pick the results that will please your partner the most.

    You can't go wrong then.

Speaking personally, I find that I retain fewer calories when I put apples into my diet.

  • Is the Galaxy Watch showing active + non-active kcal? That might account for the difference. Try changing its settings to show the active kcal so that you can compare it directly with the Apple watch.

    • It's showing workout calories and total calories side by side

  • well my first question is how long and hard were you riding?

if you were riding for an hour, 100 calories is surely wrong, it'd be more. if you rode for 20 minutes, 400 calories is also surely wrong, it'd be less.

the watches aren't set l completely accurate, but they should be fairly consistent and get you in thy ballpark.

    • Hey there
It was a 42 mins ride

  • Go buy a real watch and get a Garmin Fenix 6 Pro. They invest in their products and their app. I had a lot of watches over the years. At least the tracking so much more consistent. Even the hear rate monitoring is A+++

  • That's a big difference so I think there must be something wrong with the tracking.
The formulate to calculate calories for cycling is usually based on
    1)Weight
    2)Speed
    3)Distance
4)Activity type (cycling vs walking vs running etc)
    (occasionally elevation gain)

I would check the settings on the watch to see if there differences in the above metric because the formulas used to calculate calories are all essentially the same
