Airport Transit Tokyo Covid 19

I am planning to book a flight to Europe with an overnight transit at Tokyo.

I would not be going outside the Airport.

I can’t seem to find the correct information particularly relevant to this situation.

As it is a long transit, I was planning to book a room at the airport hotel. Does anyone know if this would be allowed under Japan’s Covid rules? Is a long stopover even allowed?

Flight centre couldn’t give me a straight answer.

Edit:
This is what I have found:

“Travelers connecting to an international flight
Travelers who are not entering Japan and transferring directly to a third country by transit, are not required to submit any documents and undergo PCR tests”

Maybe I am slow, but the word “directly” is bothering me. A 17hr transit at the airport isn’t so “direct”

Booking a room at airport hotel usually constitutes leaving the airport and thus requires passport control and a visa (+ picking up baggage).

Very rare airport hotels are airport-side only for transit only and would not require this. Since you didn't state what airport or hotel, you will need to check.

If it is the former and you will need to leave airport then you'll need a visa. Currently, there's a suspension of visa exemption for Australians (assuming you are) under Section 5 here:-

    https://www.japan.travel/en/coronavirus/

That site has all the info you are looking for clearly laid out.

Currently, all foreign nationals who wish to newly enter Japan need to apply for a visa except for those with re-entry permit. Please note that due to the impact caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the visa approval procedure may take longer than usual. Your understanding and cooperation are greatly appreciated.

    • The Royal Park Hotel Haneda. (In the transit area)

It says direct transit are no issues. Not sure if a night at the hotel would still be considered direct transit.

      • So that hotel does indeed have a transit-only section which means no requirement for visa: https://www.the-royalpark.jp/the/tokyohaneda/en/transit/

Make SURE if you book that you are booked in the transit area and not regular hotel.

You could contact the hotel via e-mail to confirm that you can stay there as a foreigner and do not require a visa. They should be able to confirm directly.

Tokyo has 2 airports, Narita and Haneda. Although most international flights go through Narita, some go through Haneda, you will need to make sure you get all your information about the correct airport.

A direct transit is when you don't need to collect your luggage and recheck it in for the next leg, the airline just does that all for you, you just need to stay within the gated area, no matter how long that is.

  • Transit in Tokyo needs to be on same calendar day.

    • Damn, I had just found a flight arriving at 8pm and departing at 00.10.
